VMWare positions pay an unreasonable amount of money because no one wants to work with it or work on it.

Get them to say you have SKILLZ in VMWARE and get a new job.

At least, I assume that's what he was driving at.

Lots and lots of firms (over here) are getting into Virtualisation about 20 fucking years after it's relevant.   I shit you not.  Right now, you say Cloud to them (as I'm doing) and they look at you like Cavemen looking at fire.  But Virtualisation is currently a bit of an in thing, so we're putting in a lot of that with Server 2012 and Cloud on ramps.  The market has a LOT of space right now (over here) for virtualisation experts and architects who can suddenly and magically turn fairly shitty kit into an architecture.

Bear in mind in some ways, this place is a fucking backwards backwater that I dearly, dearly want to get out of.  I am pretty much a God amongst insects.  But I can't go to America.  Can you imagine Huh

Honeycrisps, cool evenings, and football. Bring on autumn.

That sounds lovely.  I'm sick of summer, too.  I love Autumn around here.

Gravensteins are just disappearing when Honeycrisps are appearing, no?  I like the Honeycrisps better.  I've made sauce from Gravensteins and it's wonderful.  I think.  I might be thinking of pianos.

Yeah they're more of a sauce/pie/cider apple but I love them for eating personally as well, and they don't keep at all, so its like a week-long window where you can get them, it feels like.

We have air conditioning.

About virtualization, it's not just all the rage in the US, rather it's what people who are serious about IT do.  Running an OS on metal is frowned upon, much like Windows 98 is frowned upon in the Regular People world.  I don't really know much about vmware, instead I know VIOS but it's the same thing on a different platform.  You need to learn something about virtualization or give up IT.

A galloping horde of frowns would trample my boss to death; his idea of a backup server is Windows XP running Retrospect on an Optiplex 270. If you even mutter the words 'virtual' and 'machine' together in the same excited utterance he will break out in hives.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

But speaking of surge protectors and such, anyone happen to have an idea of why my UPS has taken to just putting out a high pitched alarm when the power goes out?  It didn't used to do that and to get the alarm to stop, I have to turn the UPS off and then back on.  This happens even when the power just flickers and comes right back on.
Means your UPS battery can't hold much or any charge.  Time to replace it.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

Virtualization is great, it allows me to install OS/2 Warp on new hardware!

That is 100% not green. I actually have been working on that recently so we can retire the old workstations bought in 1995 that are running the software (on OS/2) that allows us to monitor/configure some of our oldest building control systems.

Also not having to wait 20 minutes for the RAID and Network controllers to post on a reboot is nifty.

You can do it, but probably not worth the hassle. If you buy a copy of MS Virtual Machine I believe it has comes with a Win95 image.

I've tried before and never gotten it to run right.  There's also something about sound never working right, regardless of settings when I play Master of Magic.  While it's not important for MoM sounds pretty important for those games.

I feel ya. My wife ran my HTC One through the washing machine a few weeks back. Just got it replaced. Have an Otterbox on the way to protect it/make it a bit bulkier and noticeable so there isn't a repeat.

I guess I can take it to a repair shop tomorrow (I associate cell phone repair with the skeeziest possible businesses for whatever reason). Otherwise, I guess I have to get an outdated Nexus or something since replacing this fucker will cost roughly $Infinity.

Edit: Oh goddamnit, the nexus 5 is due out this year too? UGHHHHHHHHH

My wife ran my son's Iphone 3 (was a hand-me-down) throught the washer about a year ago.  Broke as shit, presumably because of all the water and stuff.  Obviously, it wouldn't even power on anymore.

And then, six months or so later I found it in his drawer.  Plugged it in, juiced it up and turned it on.  Worked perfectly.

I left mine in a bag of uncooked rice (supposed to help leach out the moisture) for about 3 weeks with no change. I have it sitting on my PC at home...will check it again in a few months.

That's cause rice is a very very poor desiccant, as anybody who grew up in an Asian household with large sacks of rice can attest too -- the rice never "hydrated" itself even after months of exposure to air.

That was the advice I gleaned from all the experts on 'the Internet'. I thought maybe they had the Internet in Asia, or that maybe some of those shifty immigrant types had sneaked online from America or Europe (or Peru), but maybe they were too busy being good at math and cooking delicious take out meals to help out with the soaked cell phone question.

The otterboxes are nice, as far as making your phone unbreakable.  With kids they are a must have item.  They do make the phone super clunky and heavy though.  Particularly with your gigantic phone.   awesome, for real
