Hah, I can't remember the name. But I read it here on F13 and remember being shocked and appalled that he was working at Zynga.  Or perhaps I've got it all wrong.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Yes, the guy that made Alpha Centauri and Rise of Nations was there.

What's up, Rhyssa?
Last September, my father-in-law finally got a lump in his leg looked at.  Turned out to be soft-cell cancer (forgot the proper type name) which is both rare and very aggressive.  It's also been tied to Vietnam vets who were exposed to Agent Orange (as he was - the husband has some issues tied to children of men exposed).  Anyways, he got a 10"x3"x1/2" wide chunk of muscle removed from his left thigh, they waited until his scar healed and then he had pretty strenuous radiation in January-February.

He's been having major pain management issues, and finally last weekend, after a really bad night, the MiL took him to the local ED to get looked at.  He was in renal failure and severely anemic.  Admitted him to see what was going on, they got the kidneys working properly (that was probably related to him taking ibuprofen like candy for the pain) and gave him blood.  After a week his blood counts were still off but they couldn't find any internal bleeding, so they let him go home.  What the everliving fuck.  My uncle-in-law, who is a pretty world renowned liver specialist, was appalled that the FiL was released without finding out what was causing the blood problems.

Anyways, the FiL was supposed to have a follow-up visit at Duke the Tuesday after he went to the ED (that was already scheduled before the ED) and when the MiL called to reschedule, she gave them the lowdown of what happened.  They were like "get him in here asap!" so she drove him the 4 hours there and they've had him for all of a day before finding out what was going on - the cancer is in his left-side femur and pelvis (which totally explains the blood issues) and two lymph nodes in that leg were swollen, so his lymphatic system is involved.  He's going to start radiation again and then a course of chemotherapy, not sure of the timelines for any of that yet.

The husband had already been talking about taking a quick weekend trip to see his dad but wasn't sure if he needed to fly into Raleigh or to Myrtle Beach; now he's definitely going to go as soon as he figures out which airport to head to.  This sucks.  I'm ticked off at the local hospital for not doing a more thorough job when they had him there, especially considering his history.  I'm ticked off at my FiL for not getting the lump looked at more quickly than he did (he'd had it for a few months before finally seeing a doctor) and for not doing something about his pain mgmt issues until it got so severe (yes, I know this one is irrational).  I'm pissed off at nature for this whole cancer bullshit.  It's frustrating, too, when you're a few thousand miles away and can only get updates over the phone.

Ugh.

That blows. My grandma just had a bout with cancer. I'll leave the story short, but I will say we got lucky.

In other news, there's a reddit AMA from someone that was laid off by Zynga who is either young or a big fan of kool-aid.

Geez.  What a mess.  I completely understand the frustration, having had several family members who became ill and had to deal with both doctor and hospital errors.  I think my dad eventually just gave up, which became especially hard on my sister when I was living abroad and couldn't be there to help.  I hope things settle and stay on course for your dad in law now that they've discovered what's been going on.  Stay strong!

Skimmed through it.  Seemed pretty tame.  The person certainly wasn't a fan of the company and admitted that they copied games and top level staff weren't all that good/nice.  What was kool-aidy about it?

Thanks, guys.

At least the husband and I live in civilization and have easy access to an airport or two.  The bro-in-law lives in the middle of Washington state and has to drive an hour to a small airport to get a flight to Seattle so he can go anywhere, or else drive 4 hours to either Seattle or Spokane.

And I'm annoyed that the MiL acts like the only person in my family she can give information to is her son.  When she called last Sunday to say the FiL was in the hospital, I answered the phone.  She didn't say "Oh, I have news about <husband>"  She asked for my husband and only after I said he was out cutting the grass, should he call her, did she give me the update.  The woman makes me nuts like that.  I mean, I've only been married to her son for 20 years now, she couldn't even send us a card to acknowledge that fact.  *sigh*

Good news on our cancer front in my house. Mom had a successful surgery, the pathology came back negative on all counts, and the genetic marker testing came back low risk for recurrance. So, she doesn't have to have chemo for sure or radiation. Now it's just about healing from the reconstruction on both sides, and doing the adjustments.

We're very blessed.

This is what caused my father's Leukemia and eventual death 7 years after diagnosis.  If you haven't already done so, get on the horn with the VA with your MiL.  This is a qualifying disability that will cover cancer treatments. Do not take no the first time it's said as that's SOP. Be pushy and aggressive, use that frustration.

Shouldn't be.  Strippers in movies are a lie and movies are the only place I've ever actually seen hot strippers outside of Vegas.  The two times I went locally for bachelor parties were depressing affairs with girls straight from People of Wal*Mart and I regretted the loss of the cover charge.

I hear Atlanta, Chicago, NY and LA have hot strippers but only in specific clubs.  I refuse to believe this is actually the case because I'd rather keep the cover charge in my pocket than find out.

The Cheetah in Atlanta is fantastic for eye candy. I've gone to a few bachelor parties there, and it's no joke some gorgeous women in that place. No cover if you use a ticket stub from any sporting event usually. It's mostly catering to guys who like white girls (vs. Magic City which has the better ebony dancers).

Yeah, I think they've already been looking into this and/or know about it.  I know the husband mentioned something about the cancer being a known issue and some of husband's health problems being related.  Like the FiL could get funds and so could the husband and his brother.  BiL wasn't born with anything wrong but the husband has a hole in his heart that will eventually require a valve replacement, a lazy eye and has had Hodgkins lymphoma (diagnosed at 24); I guess those particular problems have a higher incidence of occurring due to the Agent Orange exposure.

This wasn't even one of those times when I could sit back and say, "humph...Well, I guess I can see that."

And there are absolutely some gloriously hot strippers around.  You just have to find the right place and be drunk enough.

Sorry about the cancer stuff, Rhyssa and congrats to the other cancer survivors out there. As for the hospital discharging him, ER's around the country are instructed to stabilize the patients and then foist them off on someone else so the hospital doesn't get stuck with the bill. Seeing as how some politician assholes said everyone has medical care, just go to the ER!!!! everyone who can't afford insurance goes to the ER and defaults on the bill. I don't blame the ER workers, I blame the system.

The strip clubs I've been to in town (a decade ago at least but still this isn't a huge city) had some decent looking local talent. No fuglies that I could see. The club I went to in New Orleans around the same time had good looking chicks with fresh cutting scars on their bellies so...  ACK!

I can't remember if this is the VA hospital or not, but he'd actually been admitted and was there for a week before they discharged him.  Which makes it even more sucky.  The whole "treat quick and kick out of the ER" I can (almost) understand, but not finding something after a week, knowing something is still wrong, and still discharging?

I'm not qualified to talk about strippers, not ever gone to see them, nor do I particularly have any desire to do so, although Swayze was rather yummie looking in that skit.
