I listen to a lot of bluegrass, too. It's my absolute favorite for chopping wood. But I also like when people can take things and put a nice twist on it.

Fleet Foxes does a better job at accessible pop-folk than Mumford & Sons I think.

I just did an 18hour road trip listening to The Shadow broadcast shows from 1937-1938 (Orson Welles and Agnes Moorhead), so I may not be a good judge. And you should all buy Blue Coal, Pennsylvania's Finest Anthracite.

What CAN'T be excused, however, is that you didn't include a video with this post!!!

I tried but my phone is a piece of crap.

I also like Mumford & Sons.

Is now a good time to come forward and say that I almost exclusively listen to (old school, primarily) gangsta rap, poli-rock, and techno?

Well, that and my Jeff Buckley Pandora station every now and then.  "Lover, You Should've Come Over" is one of the best-written songs of all time.  Live at Sin-é if you're looking to really feel emotion.

I guess because I've never owned a mobile phone it still confuses me a little when people are asked, "did you get a pic?", and they reply, "No.  My phone sucks."  It's just weird sounding.  I might get a phone this year or I might move to Prague.  Then again, I say that every year.

There are some nice new ones. Steampunk Cthulhu neckpieces and articulated celtics did really well this year. Sorry you had to deal with the drunk guy with bad teeth. But there's not enough money in the world to make me work TRF again. Unless you got lucky and he rehired the valkyrie. Who is crazy, but cute.

Also, I can get you a deal next time.

I have possibly the best landlord ever. Monday morning I let them know the fridge had died. He shows up tonight with a new fridge, and a dozen Stella as an apology for making me wait so long. Doesn't even ask anything about the old fridge.

Why can't I have a landlord like that?  "The stove doesn't work?  Sorry, it's in your rental agreement that you're responsible for it working and making it work, despite it not working when you moved in."

I had fun this Thanksgiving. Got to shoot a handgun for the first time in 25+ years. (Shot rifles and shotguns, if badly, in the recent past).

I'm such a moron. My wife's sister's husband had brought his -- 45, although I didn't think to catch the make -- and we're trading off shooting with it because while we have plenty of ammo for the shotguns and the rifles, he didn't think to bring much so we have less than 30 rounds for a handful of people.

I'm on my second go (kicked less than I thought -- I managed to reliably hit a plate sized target at what is, effectively, bare minimum range. 20 feet or so) and I manage to gouge a chunk out of my left thumb on the damn slide.

Which when I'd first picked it up, I reminded myself "Don't grip it high because that slide will eat your hand". Which makes it doubly stupid that I had my off hand up that high and, you know, gouged the shit out of my thumb.

The funny part was my three-year old nephew looks at my hand dripping blood and says "Did you shoot yourself?". Poor kid was terrified, I had to convince him I hadn't while trying to find something to stop the bleeding. (It wasn't bad, didn't hurt, just bled a lot. I finally found paper towels and electrical tape and improvised. We weren't house adjacent at the time).

He was out because his mom and his dad both enjoy target shooting and hunting, so they're not letting him shoot even a bb gun for years yet, but he wants to see what they do and they want him to learn to handle them safely. (They're both very careful owners. Locked cases inside of a locked gunsafe).

So he gets this long lecture and huge punishment threats if he tries to touch a gun, and he's back behind the truck, and he's got in these earplugs and is properly respectful of the guns.

And then I wander back bleeding and scare him to death. I felt so bad.

Fun gun. I'd prefer a smaller caliber though. 9mm is about as big as I'd want to go.

Father in law -- avid hunter (although switched to bows in recent years. Wanted more of a challenge and I think that decades of hunting makes actually having to clean an animal more of a pain, with the fun being hanging around outside on brisk mornings)  -- keeps meaning to bring his .22 pistol, which he swears is great for learning the basics. (Cheap ammo, low kick, etc).

Nothing beats shotguns for sheer fun -- at least in terms of guns I have access too. Peppering things with shot is just fun. :)

Skeet shooting is a blast, although I can't hit squat. The few times I've been, I've averaged about 2 to 4 clays out of 20 or so. (And that's pulling one at a time, not two). I just don't fire a shotgun enough to get a feel for how it spreads over distance, and certainly not enough to properly lead a target.

Fun though!

Two days of prep and I kept up with the dishes as I went. After loading the dishwasher I only had about an hour of cleaning. It was a long couple of days and I didn't get to socialize hardly at all, which sucked.

The food was really, really good, though. All from scratch. My favorite was the carmalized onion sage bacon apple stuffing.

I did it because I wanted to. My fiancee and her mother normally go out to a buffet and my mother hangs out with my aunt or her church people. I may return to gaming again next year :)

Best part of turkey day was watching my 3-year old nephew rock out to Gangnam Style. Was his birthday too so it was played multiple times. He even known the Korean lyrics and sings them.  awesome, for real

What's wrong with you people not taking pics of your babies doing gangnam style!  When I go home in December, I hope my baby niece and nephew have learned it.  Of course I don't have a camera.  Or one of those magic phones that thinks it's a camera.

Someone brought a tofurkey to the party I was at last night. The others who tried it said it was pretty good and actually tasted a lot like the real thing. I took a taste and was like, "so this is the grand tradition I've been missing all these years? I'll stick with lasagna, thanks."

Page late necro, but yeah undersink water filtration systems are terrific.  We got rid of our water cooler when my wife was pregnant and I discovered that the giant plastic water bottles you return and the company hot scrubs out again for re-use are full of BPA.

Edit: and Tofurkeys are also great.

Heh - we also went shooting over the Thanksgiving holiday - I brought five handguns in a variety of calibers for the rest of the guys that were also avoiding Black Friday nonsense to have a go with, along with something like $200 in ammunition.  I think we stayed there for about two and a half hours, and even the guy that largely couldn't shoot worth a damn had a ball.

In the cases I've witnessed, 'slide bite' affecting the offhand is the result of wrapping the weak side hand around the strong side wrist or crossing the support hand thumb over the strong side thumb instead of alongside it (both of which are occasionally used by people that primarily shoot revolvers) - my pops had this issue for a while when we jumped back into the hobby.  You might want to try adjusting your grip - I prefer 'thumbs-forward' when shooting semi-autos, which allows you to grip it up high with the strong hand, getting as much of the gun as possible firmly in control of both hands with no risk of cutting up your off hand:

When shooting revolvers, I just tuck my forward thumb downward to keep it away from the cylinder gap.

Yep, had my offhand thumb crossed over. Didn't even occur to me that might be a bad grip for an automatic. That thumbs forward one would work, just seems...awkward looking.

I'd prefer awkward, though, to blood. :)

I'm mulling over acquiring a 22 automatic sometime next year. The pawnshops down here do a brisk business in guns, and the prices are rather low -- and I can't see any reason to buy brand new. I can drag a friend along who knows enough about guns who can spot the difference between "piece of shit" and "good used" and call it a day. And save a good amount.

My sister-in-law has this ridiculously teeny 22 revolver. Think "Maverick" and the tiny-hass gun she has stuffed in her garter or cleavage, and that's her 22. That was fun to watch her and her hubby shoot (again, limited rounds. Nobody was really sure how much ammo was up there and how good any of it was. The shotgun shells and rifle stuff was all solid, but the 22 ammo was decade+ old and would fire maybe 1 out of 6) it. It's swallowed up by your hand.
