Also, any of you parents out there have a miracle cure for colic?   Ohhhhh, I see.
Fennel.

As well as ginger.

Got something from the store with fennel and ginger.  We'll see how it pans out.

Thumbs up!  Looks like a good value to me.  Girlfriend does a lot of laptop gaming so she's going to need something nicer soon.

I've had nothing but good luck with Lenovo products to date.

I've heard the same from others as well.

I'm also looking at this model: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215628

edit: nm  I purchased the Acer.  I think my wife will enjoy the touchscreen aspect of it.  She loves photographs and stuff.  She might actually like the Win8 aspect of things.

Yep, had my offhand thumb crossed over. Didn't even occur to me that might be a bad grip for an automatic. That thumbs forward one would work, just seems...awkward looking.
I keep my off-hand cupped underneath the grip, which puts it completely out of the way but supports the weight of the gun.  It's only a problem for me with monsters like a desert eagle, but no grip would help with that, only strength training.

I'm seeing some discussion that basically Win8 really demands the touchscreen.

I've never liked that grip. Just doesn't feel right. Have to experiment next time I'm down there -- it's a fun and therapuetic sport, and the people I shoot with are all safety crazy like you wouldn't believe. Which suits me just fine. JUST fine.

About the only thing they're not paranoid enough about is ear and eye protection. Still don't have eyewear, but I won't fire more than a handful of rounds without earplugs. I LIKE my hearing the way it is.

A single shot could do serious damage to your hearing. I have some hearing issues due to my time in the military and in my case it was a single shot in a single incident (indoors, but still).

My hearing has been a little wonky since one afternoon shooting targets and jackrabbits with an AR-15 and Mini-14 as a teen.  Neither is a particularly loud gun, but between myself and my friend next to me in the jeep, it was enough.  The next day I could barely hear and had tunnel vision.  Earplugs are a must.

Mine got jacked by sitting in front of cranked amps in a tiny room for years. Had pretty severe tinnitus for a long time, I'm kind of used to it (and only hear it when I think about it, thanks :p)

But the worst thing to happen to my ears was sitting front row at a Skynyrd concert where they had a PA speaker stage center at full blast in the front row's face. That was pretty rude, and it sounded awful. Fun concert, but I had a chainsaw in my ear for a day.

Wear ear plugs if you go to a concert and sit anywhere near a speaker, hearing isn't something to play around with. Big events at arenas will have free ear plugs at the medic station, just go ask.

Firework almost in the ear canal when I was 17, I still get occasional ringing at random times.

I have a long line of older relatives with hearing aids. (heavy equipment + no ear protection will do that)  I am trying to avoid that as long as I possibly can.

Hearing loss - our generation's arthritis. Everyone's got it and everyone has a different story about it.   Mine was too many metal albums cranked to max on the bus to school and swimming practice every day.  I'm still stupid enough to do it when I mow the lawn.  I don't have the constant ringing, but it fades out and springs up from time to time and I can't pick-out conversations from background noise anymore.  I know a hearing aid is in my future.

It's made me very paranoid about the kids so I don't even let them use headphones now. I don't care how obnoxious the music or application is, it's better than knowing they'll have hearing problems because you can't tell a kid to turn it down not expect they'll keep it at a sane level.

Been shooting with friends myself recently, something I hadn't done since I was in Boy Scouts 25 years ago.  Now I'm thinking of getting a pistol just for range work.. go figure.  No .22 though, I dislike the feel of all of them, they're 'off.'  Most comfortable for me so far have been the 9mm and .44 glock and H&Ks my friends had.

The big gun nut here has a set of electronic noise cancelling headphones.  He's out or I'd have a brand and link for you, so instead here's this.
http://www.earplugstore.com/earmuffs.html

I tried them when we were last at the range and they were fantastic.  The speaker knows when to muffle and when not to so you can hear normally when nobody's firing and don't run in to the usual "lift up one side or shout at everyone" problems wearing over-the-ear protection runs in to.

With your off hand as well.  If you're ambidextrous.. well, fuck you.

My hearing is insane.  I listen to TV at near minimum volume.  I have trouble sleeping due to it.

I got accustomed to listening very closely for my kid crying at night.  We turned the baby monitor off permanently pretty early on, because it just wasn't necessary.  Ohhhhh, I see.  Half of the time at night I have to shoo my cats downstairs because they keep me up.

I work on storage systems that can cause pretty bad hearing loss if you work near them for 10 minutes at a time. So, I don't.  Luckily they have a small amount of FRUs, so working at the machine for prolonged periods of time isn't very necessary.

I'm surprised I don't have a lot of hearing loss what with all the years of sitting in front of trombone players.

I may be the only one here without any significant hearing loss - hell, I can still hear those 'mosquito' ringtones.

I've got an electronic set and love them, but also keep a blister pack of the disposable foam earplugs in the range bag just in case someone forgot theirs or in the event that there will be bystanders within earshot when we're on private land.

If you're looking for a 9mm range gun, check out the CZ-75B - I can't recommend them enough.  Excellent reliability, accuracy and just general ergonomic comfort, and they're still pretty reasonably priced.  Mine's had over 10K through it and still runs like a top, though I did have to replace the recoil spring (~$15) after about 8K.

So would I, but 9mm isn't terribly expensive to shoot for a 'real' caliber.  I usually pay about $10/box for range ammo.  There's a .22LR conversion for the CZ-75 that runs about $300 and lets you practice with ammo that only costs $15 for 500, though.

Friends of mine have a set for their whole family for hunting, they tend to wear them sitting out in front of a fire when camping. Theirs damp down the loud, enchance the soft so you can hear things moving around.

Their 14 year old almost peed himself the first night he was wearing them and an owl hooted behind him. Scared the crap out of him.

Same here.  I had a Sony Discman and Walkman when I was younger and even with headphones on the highest I would listen to anything was a single notch above the "min" setting (out of 10 max).  The hearing test they did at work when I started amazed them with how much upper range I still had.  I've also always had super sensitive hearing though, it's quite the curse.  I always carry ear plugs with me and wear them at work under almost every situation and every concert I've been to for 10 years.  My only real complaint is I'll be sitting in complete silence and all of the sudden one ear will start ringing loudly at a lower frequency for 30-45s and then go away like nothing happened.  Doctors don't know and said not to worry about it.

My girlfriend's daughter sits and uses the laptop and her portable DVD player with earbuds and I can hear the music\dialog out of them.  I tell her that's WAY too loud to listen to and still keep her hearing but her response is "so?  I wanna hear it!"  The concept of permanent hearing loss is lost on a large portion of the population.

I am so glad CRT monitors/TVs are virtually extinct.  The high-pitched hum from them used to bug me to no end, and hardly anyone else could hear it.
