I was curious, so I did some searching and ran into this: ... parasitic wasp embryos inspired the infamous "birth" scene in the 1979 horror flick Alien. Injected into a caterpillar by their mother, the once egg-encased wasp embryos develop for about 14 days. Then things get ugly.
In a biological attack unique in the animal world, the unassuming embryos use a virus in their DNA to paralyze their host. They bite their way out of the caterpillar and begin spinning cocoons.
As a final insult to the injured host, the caterpillar--apparently brain-addled by the virus--builds a silky blanket over its attackers and defends them against predators until the wasps emerge, fully formed, and take to the skies.
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/05/photogalleries/in-the-womb-animal-pictures/photo3.htmlNasty. The video at the link that made me squirm. As far as The Thing goes, if the remake is as good as the Zombie Zombie video from a couple years back, I'll be happy with it. Was kinda hoping for something more along the lines of the video game, but I guess it's more about the Norwegian camp.

So I was driving around today, and I saw this dude in a pretty nice late model black Porsche. He was like stylin', with a backwards beret, and those stupid pilot mirrored sunglasses that retards think are popular. In the back of the Porsche, what did my eyes spy? Nothing but a box of Chuck Shaw. Not a box of bottles, mind you. On no. That one might use for cooking wine. No, this was Charles Shaw in a refrigerator box. I think you have to turn in your Porsche for that.

Guy spent all his money on the Porsche and can't afford wine that doesn't come in a box?

Ain't nothing wrong with Two-Buck Chuck. Comeon now. It's pretty much the only drinkable box wine.

That's pretty much the faintest praise I can think of for wine.

Murgos, I take it you mean the original 'The Thing' from 1951 rather than the Carpenter version. The Carpenter version was made in 82, while Alien was made in 79.
I forgot that it was originally called "The Thing from Another World", but yes, of course the original. Yegolev, both movies incorporate strong themes of being in a small group away from possible rescue, trapped in small dark corridors with an alien being that you don't understand and seems unstoppable. Maybe it's not a 'remake' but they have very similar themes.

Yeah, but that's only window dressing. They were both just Haunted House movies with Sci-fi trappings.

Good read. It made me think of Green Patches, by Asimov, but better.
What's sad is that Peter Watts is in jail for disobeying U.S. Customs agents at the border.

That's the one. It was in the Nightfall anthology.
Just to clarify- it was because I remember the green patch bacteria looking at us as being flawed and were making an effort to improve life the way it saw fit.

I'm not sure if it counts as irony that I found a job posting for a project manager at HP on the Dice.com website. Maybe it counts because I applied anyways?

I hope it's for my account. Your account have an open req for a PM out there? It's probably not though, had a (PL) behind it which is for pipeline stuff. Either way, I'm wondering how long it takes them to actually do something about my app, considering I got an email last week about a job I posted for back before I was laid off 6 months ago.

Oh, I am in Chattanooga right now, wishing I could see the cursor in this editing window and that I could zoom out a bit with the Droid. The zoom works when I am not typing.

Careful what you wish for. I think I can count the number of PM's I've worked with that weren't complete fuckwits on one hand. The vast majority I could have done without.

Alan Wake and Red Dead Redemption on the same day? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. I've seen enough video on Red Dead to realize it's GTA in the West, but Alan Wake has been a title I haven't seen anything more than a promise and a trust in the developer to deliver.

As I was Googleing around to find out if the Tom Selleck movie Xilren posted was the one with the killer spider bots (it was.) I came across This. Robot spiders in development. Perhaps it belongs in the Spiders are Awesome thread instead.
