Ah yeah, the goddamn public folder sunset.  I was pretty annoyed about that too until I realized I'd already mostly switched to rehosting all those random images on imgur as needed since their CDN is faster.

I'm still deciding what to do about Dropbox. I get that public linking was costing them money, but they make enough. More than enough, really, for operating an app and connecting it to fucking storage.

I had switched from using Dropbox to Google Drive for anything other than public hosting of images. More space for free and connected to my Gmail? Yes please. Now that Dropbox doesn't even do the image hosting thing, I've no reason to use them and certainly no reason to ever pay to use them. Yes, I was one of those filthy freeloaders.

I might have considered a nominal fee for the image hosting, because I'm lazy and had all my shit set up there. But meh.

And I didn't feel too bad about freeloading since it was technically paying for advertising. I was pretty happy with DB other than the skimpy 2GB I had. Set the fiancee up and she started uploading all our vacation pics and sharing the folders with me, so was immediately slammed to the cap. I have referred a lot of people to the service over the years, and now I feel bad about doing so.

I'm not a freeloader at all. But imagehosting was 99% of what I did.

The ironic thing is it turned a potential revenue stream into bad PR. That's straight-up incompetence, and why I won't really be recommending the company to anyone.

Imagine how many people who have invested their data and linking from their servers are too lazy to seek out alternatives and would just pony up $50-100/yr to continue using it that way. Tier it with some storage and gimp the corporate sharing, fork out a whole separate 'this is how people are actually using our service' branch.

Ah, well. Feel free to hire me to come run the company  why so serious? I'll probably be out of a job soon, anyway.

Things your boss says to you that makes your ass pucker and inflame your curiosity at the same time:

"This is confidential. I'll deny it if anyone asks, which they shouldn't..."

"We can't do anything <company x> has done..."

Sounds like a company looking at the losing end of patent infringement litigation, or who just saw a big enough loss in a related company to realize they're next.

It's too late know, but that bread discussion would have been more insightful if everyone had shown pics of their bread. Going by description ("it's light") isn't so helpful without a frame of reference.

This is the bread I bake at home, complete with artisan paper bag for when I give it away, which is most of the time.  (And this pic reminds me I need to work on my bakery website...)

Are we doing a "You show me yours, I show you mine?"  Heart

This is my bread. Mine as in, I bought it myself, not as in "I made it". It's decent for being supermarket bread:

They were probably proofed in flour dusted linen-lined baskets, dusted with flour on the "top" and then scored after flipping (so the curved bottom is now the top).

That was my thought. It's that or 'the mothership' that is the software platform are acquiring <company x> and rolling their features into the main program. If so any effort to provide similar tools for our customers would be wasted.

In other news, I finally have a date for my ulnar nerve decompression surgery. The surgeon is doing an extra list so I'm booked in for a week on Monday. Pleased but slightly nervous at the same time.

Yes, Apoc, good luck!  Where did you talk about this?  Did I miss it?  I can't imagine I'd forget about it.  Is this something that you have to recover from?  Or when it's over, it's just over and there's no after effects?  Make sure they give you Tuinal.  It's the most awesome thing ever.

I dunno, I might have only talked about it in the art thread because I had to stop trying to learn to draw because of it. It's a combination of carpal tunnel and nerve compression so they're gonna open my arm up in a couple of places and re-site the ulna nerve to the inside of my elbow and 'free things up a bit' (surgeon's words) in my wrist. Should be a quick recovery if nothing goes wrong, it's very low risk.

Bonus is that I'll no longer have a funny bone in my right arm because the nerve will be elsewhere.  awesome, for real

Modern medicine has probably been doing this for a relatively long time now but it still kinda blows my mind that they can effectively rewire your nervous system like that and everything keeps on working.

It's actually really minor surgery, they're not cutting any nerves, just separating them from surrounding connective tissues and moving one out of the groove in the elbow. The surgeon said that the ulna nerve is nearly a cm thick together with it's protective sheath and that it's no more complicated than jointing a chicken. Whole process will take about 30 mins, not even an overnight stay. The only real risks are from the general anaesthesia.

Had a buddy in college who had that done. Freaked me the fuck out when he told me, then proceeded to jam his thumb into my elbow to show me where the nerve is.

True that :)

And not really, they said it can be all sorts of things, mostly just general wear and tear though. The things that make it flare up badly are things like drawing, woodworking, chopping & cutting while cooking, etc, so those are the things that over time just cause it to happen.

Sky: ahh, that makes more sense than the Welsh playwright who came up when I googled :)

Sex toys and smart robots: Who's liable?

A wave of shock went through the audience of one of the panels at the RightsCon event in Brussels on Thursday (30 March), as technology consultant Ken Munro demonstrated that the camera on an internet-connected vibrator can be hacked.
The images of the camera feed, shown on a screen, were remarkably sharp.
[...]
There is a market for remote-controlled pleasure devices, which could be in demand with couples who have a long-distance relationship, or if one of the partners travels frequently.

“What happens when you think you are interacting with your partner, but someone has man-in-the-middled [hacked] your sex device?,” said Amie Stepanovich, of Access Now, the main organiser of RightsCon, a conference on human rights and the Internet.

“What happens when you find out that the person on the other end of that isn't somebody you know whatsoever? What are the legal implications, what are the security implications, what are the policy implications when you can start hacking into sex toys?”
[...]
In the above-mentioned examples, there is still a human involved that could be considered liable for the malevolent actions.

But what if the sex toy is self-learning? What if sex robots with artificial intelligence become predatory?

Some people really don't know how to post simple condolences on Facebook.

Story - an online friend of mine posted a few days ago that her SO was in ICU with acute pancreatitis.  Wasn't doing well and she posted early this morning that he'd passed away.  String of people posting condolences.  Except that one person.  Friend's husband passed away suddenly in late 2014, leaving her with a young son, and she'd just been in this relationship for not that long, it seems.

This creature actually said that friend's SO died because he wasn't the right guy for her? WTF says that to anyone?!?

A really poorly worded one it seems.

I think the intent was to say, condolences and the hope that love will continue to be a part of your life in the future. What came out was...not great.

A simple "I'm sorry for your loss." or just not posting is usually the best thing to go with if you're one of those "all part of God's plan" assholes that need to contextualize every fucking death.
