Having discovered Da Ali G Show only two weeks ago I must admit it's pretty damned funny. I doubt I'll be motivated to watch this in a theater but I'm definitely going to see it.

Some of the Borat shit is unbearable. Some of it is too funny. Just TOO funny. He really swings heavily in both of those directions. So the only proper way to see this movie will be drunk. Very very drunk.

He's at his best in a room full of idiots, using his supposed bigotry to expose theirs. He'll probably never beat the James Broadwater interview.

Haven't kept up with Ali G since halfway through the second season. Was kinda wearing off for me by then, but I suppose it'd be funny again now.
Borat definitely takes the cake though. The whole thing (the bigot exposing thing) is pure genius.
[edit] Speaking of that, is this film going to be a "movie" movie or is he going to film real people in it? Borat may be funny, but I don't think it'd work unless he's doing the latter. I mean, what would be the point?

One of the trailers shows it's mainly real people, but it's all set up with a backstory of him being sent on a mission to the USA. The "leaving Kazakhstan" scenes were apparently filmed in Romania due to the Kazakh government's objections to the character.

My favorites were probably when he took the interpretative dance class ("Have you heard of this group called Mi-a-mi Sound Ma-chine? Everybody dancing now.") and when he followed around the guy running for congress ("He will be strong leader, like a-Stalin", or "If you vote for him, he will take care of you and your family, if not... *breaks pencil*") Pure genius. Much funnier than Ali G.

When he's brilliant with the Ali-G character, though, he's really on. Such as getting Pat Buchanan to look into the camera with a straight face and rap about how he "ain't just for the cracker man anymore".

That was the James Broadwater interview that I linked above. It's my favorite. Ali G was very good early on, but he went off the boil with that character after it became a popular fad. "Is it cos I is black?" and "You is only saying that cos you is a bit of a batty boy yourself" dropped in a conversation with a doddery old fool from the House of Lords was always entertaining though.

That's the basic setup--it's like a bunch of long Borat interviews with random "plot" skits mixed in. Most of the plot makes no sense but some of it is funny(in black): there is a running of the Jew in Kazakhstan and a panting contestant exclaims "the Jew... he almost got my money."

The thing that sucks about Borat/Ali G is that the more popular it gets the more unsustainable the character is. Success has the paradoxical effect of killing off the character.

Sorry, have to post this one I just found: "Borat - Hunting the Jew". The IMDB link I followed said (unverified) this Borat clip never aired because it was just too much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCrMyI6ngLg

I saw a review on this on my local ABC affiliate. The soccer mom who reviews movies for them hated it. But, she loved the part that took place in Jackson. Apparently, Borat came by that station and had an interview with one of the anchors there as well as bothering the weatherman. Borat told them he was from Khazakistan and they were filming a documentary.

I just came from the movie tonight; It's very funny. Almost painfully so. If you can't laugh at this movie, you either aren't human or aren't in on the joke.

Which confirms my assumption - this will be the funniest film of the year.

Going to try and catch the 5:30 show today. Leaving at 3 to try and get in. They only have it showing on 1 screen at a theatre that has 20. I don't get it.

The number of screens the movie was to open on got cut back drastically. I forget the numbers, but I think it went down to around 700-800 screens from the 2000 or so it was originally planned to open on. I think there was a lot of fear that people just wouldn't get the humor I checked the paper yesterday and the theater I work at is one of five I think out of the 20 or so theaters that were listed that have the movie (we're 20 screen and showing it on 2).

Since last night they've moved it onto 3 more screens. The guy at the front said they never expected it to be this popular.
Oh yeah, fucking hilarious.

I read today that it is being bumped up to 2000 screens by next weekend. The distributer just got hinky at the last minute which likely cost it some serious money.

Doh, dont see a Japan release date on IMDB, going to have to bit torrent this I guess. Which is probably best anyways, since I found out it cost about 20 bucks to see a god damn movie here.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

This film is made so much better by the fact that we have a guy in the office who looks EXACTLY like Borat.
