Eh I'm torn between AoC and Warhammer as the much hoped for WoWKiller. (Or WoW1.5 or...something)  If asked to pick a pony right now I'd back AoC, but your siren's song of "meaningful PvP" has me interested.

Good article also.

So... Warhammer Online is to DAOC as WoW is to EQ? Shit, if they can pull that off, they may actually have a major game. On the other hand, it took a company known for, erm, embracing and extending others' game concepts to build EQ++ so I'm skeptical of an IP owner actually improving their own product. The track record's not exactly good in this market.

A better DAoC than DAoC sounds good to me. And any MMOG with shaving as an end game goal is worthy of checking out.

Yes, I've been chatting to Xanthi and Righ, and as nice as ATitD might be, we are definitely needing stuff to kill.  Anything you can kill in ATitD is totally unsatisfying.  Not even a meaty crunch or a bleat from a sheep.   huh  This sounds like it could be it.. if, like Son said, they can deliver.  HURRY!  I'm beginning to walk like an Egyptian!!!

Sorry squirrel, but the jiggly bits have been ingrained in to Warhammer lore since long before the days of WoW. I still think its going to be funny to see how they try to PG13ize some of the lore that the Warhammer world is built around.

Oh I know. And in the right context Im a HUGE fan of Jiggly Bits. Even in MMORPG's - for instance robe wearing finger wigglers can look like that. But someone with a sword/dagger/whatever. Le sigh. That particular pic is really silly imo.

Nice write-up, Llava. Mythic should maybe hire you to do some pre-release marketing because you definitely got my attention and made me want to give Mythic another chance (I, too, am a disgruntled former DAoC subscriber). If Mythic and Funcom do things right, Conan and Warhammer could be two killer MMOGs. Here's hoping...

I do feel bad for the dev team having their head shots dumped into the press kit. Recognition is nice surely, but I didn't need to see the geek squad while browsing screenshots for their game.

I love the Warhammer mythos and if they do it justice this could potentially be the game to cause me to leave WoW. Especially if all that "your character changes as he grows in power" stuff happens.

How, praytell, do the Witch Elves fuck skulls? Do they use strap-ons? Sort of defeats the purpose does it not?

I guess what i really mean to say is; there is more to character development for the Evil Elfs, right?

Llava,

Great write-up.  One of the things that has turned on the great light switch for me was the mention in the You-Tube vid of the frothing dev guy was the fact that X players working on a quest for their side (to kill the squigg things) would net a benefit for everyone working on the goal and then advance the next bit to keep it rolling for everyone involved.  The ability to provide group level immersion without actually requiring everyone to be grouped is a great peice of work.  I like that thought process.

That's their Public Quest system, which is apparently deployed both for PVP and PVE. Basically, when you enter an area with a public quest, you're automagically considered 'on that quest' for the duration of your stay. If people contribute to the quest's completion (the one demonstrated to us involved bringing items to an NPC), then everyone in the area (or everyone who contributed; not clear which - fuzzy memory) gets a reward.

A lot of these quests apparently are 'tiered', so after the basic reward is distributed, a 'second part' of the quest is opened and another goal is placed out for that area, leading to another reward if that's completed. The quests reset after a period of time, although I'm not certain whether the quest has to be completed for it to reset, if it will simply reset after some period of inactivity, or via some other method.

It sounded like a neat little addition that I'm sure a lot of other Classes/Levels/Groups/Quests-archetype MMOs will pick up.

My opinion on the game right now is that I'm eager to try the beta when it comes out, which is about as high as an MMO can score these days.

So are we looking at early 2007 for a beta?

According to these comments also from the FAQ it's before the end of this year.

Quote
Regarding the Battler, don't rely too heavily on the models you saw in the demos in terms of what to expect from the final design. They were chosen mostly for aesthetic reasons and aren't intended to represent exactly what you'll see when we launch (or even when we go into beta later this year). The class-limiting for Greenskins is mostly designed to allow us to use both Orcs and Gobbos without having ridiculous stuff like a goblin Warboss running around as a powerful melee character.

...

Finally, we're relying on an extensive, year+ long beta, coupled with everything (good, bad and otherwise) that we've learned from Camelot.

Also from the FAQ

Quote
Q: Betaaaaaaaaaaa. *drools* Where is the beta sign up!

A: There will be contests, sign up forms, guild betas, and more. Starting (for the most part) this summer. Watch the newsletter and the websites for more information.

Yes, I said guild beta. I'll be putting that together and taking applications late this summer. Guilds will be judged based on how active your members are in your current game or forum (NOT number of members), the length of time you've been together, your website, and more. We'll want a mix of guild types, of course, so my best advice for potential guilds is to be who you are with as much style as possible.

If there's enough interest here we should try for the guild Beta.

Yeah really, counting the members of the two corporations we have in EVE, and the more-than-none people that are running two accounts there, this group should be a shoo-in.  You might also show them the three or four wingnuts we have playing UO, but that could go either way, I guess.

If I want to go anywhere in a game as a guild, I won't expect to do it with you guys.  Too much Videogame ADD around here. Eve is an abhoration due to a lack of AAA titles being release in a year and a half.  Undoubtly I will join and feel like an idiot when you guys stop playing.
