I'm fairly certain they're not the first guys to do exactly that, but I forget the names of the company that was doing it. All I remember was that they were part of the competition to launch from the ground, go into space and perform an atmospheric reentry. And the craft had to be easily reusable as well.

Its not really about the reentry, its about the hinged tail section that allows them to control the fall with much greater precision. Maybe I'm just an aviation nerd, but to me, that's pretty huge.
