Every time I see something about it I think it's a foolish eggs-in-one-basket risk.
If they can pull it off, awesome. If they fail it's a huge waste. Doing it smaller scale as proof of concept w/o the rover would have been more prudent, imo. Send the rover up in one of the previous successful ways instead. Then, if the experiment worked, do the next rover that way.
