Gothic1: was this the game where you could buff by smoking herb?  And there was a cult in a jungle/marsh that mostly did just that?  If so, bizarre game.  Remember it's end was not winning.

Well, I signed up for the beta.  Now we play the waiting game...

It's free!  Which makes it automatically superior to anything you have to pay a subscription for.

Got my beta invite today, email says no NDA, just follow a couple of simple rules and you're cleared to post screens.  Starts tomorrow as far as I can tell.

Looking at my seed forums post count, I guess it was random and you're just really unlucky.

Hah. Maybe it was a combination of low post count and really crappy computer lolz. I'd like to play, but it's just as well, given what betas are like. :)

Aren't they starting off with only 500 and building up to something like 10K by the end of March?  I bet you ALL get in!

This is something I see every MMOG beta attempt to do, but I've not seen it happen. We'll start small and scale up and then we get beta and stress testing all at once. Problem is, they all start to choke at right around 1000 players. ;) But I'm being negative. Lemme see... I hope that I get in the test. It looks interesting. There... a nice positive note.

It's more of an alpha right now.
Servers are not stable at all, but you can see that devs are really working on changing that.
Lag and pathfinding would use some serious work, too.
It's still way to early to draw any conclusions whether game will suck or own, but seeing how fast devs are at finding and eliminating bugs I'm full of hope.

Character creation is kinda cool, there is a hairstyle called "Exploded Duck".  You also get the choice of about 36 colors for skin, hair, and clothing.  Male/Female, and 3 body shapes, with a slider for height.

Ooo, the exploding duck.   I wonder if it's anything like duck-butt.  I love that hairstyle.

Maybe it's a good thing I didn't get in right away if it's seriously unstable.  I have sort of a low patience tolerance these days with my computer.  I'd hate for that to have a negative impact on my view of the game before it even has a chance to prove itself.

Do keep me updated, peeps.  Thanks!

Despite it being in alpha - It's never to early to decide if a game will suck or not. You look at the mechanics and how quests are handled, the quality of writing or whatever, and then you slap down a verdict. It should take no more than 30 minutes to dismiss 2 years of a game company's blood, sweat, and tears. Remember, 99% of the games out there are crap. No one would be shocked if more crap got released. Sometimes we just hope for some games to be "better."

So how's this thing going?  Does it suck?  Does it show promise?  Is there a grind?

I haven't ever actually posted anything on their forums.  Is that a requirement?

I think I read somewhere that it was, but I suspect it's low on the list. The main req. this time around was 1 gig ram, which I don't have. QQ and all that

It must be pretty low on the list.  I don't even remember signing up for the beta (though my memory sucks anyway)  and I KNOW I've never posted anything on their board.  Maybe they weren't getting what they were looking for in terms of sign-ups or something.  It happens.

Their newsletter offered some more clues for the betaless:
Quote
Nevertheless, the Beta opened February 1st 12:00 CET. Our uptime was a
tremendous 13 minutes, before the first crash occurred – that was
about 12 minutes more than expected. We pretty soon accomplished uptimes
of 30-60 minutes, and thanks to our should-be-patented Sys-op-in-a-box
servers were restarted automatically and up again within a few minutes.

Oh... good...
