Looks like fun to me. At least it's not more of that grimdark bullshit that they ruined Superman with.

I at least like that it's not grimdark.
It's also really the fundamental premise of Shazam/Captain Marvel; it's possible that any faithful treatment of it would be something all of you would hate. It's basically the film "Big" crossed with Superman--like if your wish to be grown-up didn't make you a successful toy executive but instead made you Superman.
The problem really begins maybe with the ways the culture has changed since "Big" was made. It's hard now to believe that any eleven or twelve-year old boy turned into a late twenties/early thirties adult would have the experience the character in Big had. First because any employer faced with a person with no background would not hire them in any role--the kind of mobility that "Big" was playing with has more or less ceased in American corporate life. Second because there are plenty of men who've never grown up, and the worlds of childhood and adulthood have merged in general in the culture in ways that were simply not true in 1988 or in the 1940s when Captain Marvel was first created. Third because the really gentle way that "Big" opened up sexuality also would just not work now--Josh's relative innocence was seen ultimately as charming by the woman executive who pursues a relationship with him; today I think she would assume he was a scary pedophile whose interest in toys was evidence of something wrong. Plus I would guess that most twelve-year old boys today have seen pornography online that twelve-year old boys in 1988 might have glimpsed only briefly when they found some hobo's stash of filth in a tree near the park. etc.
Fourth also basically we've done so much deconstruction of superheroes, esp. Alan Moore in Miracleman (a direct riff on Shazam) that our assumptions about a 14-year old boy suddenly given Superman's powers are pretty dark now in terms of what we'd expect to happen next.
So this takes a pretty deft hand to steer this property back into some space of cultural plausibility. Being more wise-assed about it is one of the most likely ways to go that I can think of.

This is a problem in our society. Why can't we have movies about kids that are just awkwardly trying to figure out how to be a hero? Why have we gone from steering kids away from graphic violence to *wink-nudge* you don't have to play Mortal Kombat, but all the cool kids are, so check out this graphic fatality? How many kids have any of us been around who would use new super powers to kill bullies and rob stores? Most I have been around would use it for insta-fame on the internet. Many of the kids I have been around would want to help their families and their friends. They would reach out and try to get help in understanding how to use their new powers to help. It seems like treacle bullshit, but in healthy families, this is how kids are being raised. Why do we need another movie about bullied kids that are telling bullied kids that once you have power, violence is the only solution?

I'm excited to see Big with a cape. I don't need some deep moral undercurrent.

Yeah, it works for me as a basic premise. But I get why it takes a deft touch.

Carrie was already redone. (I enjoyed it) I haven't seen a Firestarter remix or mention of it yet. Yet. I would like to see an updated Christine.

If you haven't gone to see this, you damn well should. If you like comic book movies, you should go see this. This is hands down the best DC movie that has been done since the Nolan Batman films. It is on a par with some of the better Marvel movies - I'm not putting it in the Guardians/Winter Soldier level, but it's every bit as good as both Ant-Man's, Dr. Strange and Capt. Marvel. Zach Levi and the kids in this are great fun to watch.

I didn't think it was that great to be honest. I liked the guy who played Billy and some of the humor but for the most part it felt like much more of a kids movie than any other superhero film to date, including actual cartoons.

Watched this yesterday. I enjoyed it, although I'm not sure I liked their approach with Billy but I can see why they chose this route. I enjoyed their focus on family.

I'm not sure that kind of violence even phases kids these days, at least not kids over the age of like 7 or 8. The emotional impact of the scene I'm talking about was a lot more mature and dark than I expected. EDIT: And I should say it was dark without being grimdark. That's I think the big difference between this and the earlier DCEU movies - the scenes with Clark's parents had a whole lot less emotional weight than any moment Billy had with any of the family, foster or real.

It won't. In the board room scene, one dude gets his head literally chomped off by one of the seven deadly sins, but there's no blood or gore shown. Today's kids won't bat an eyelash at it.

Why do we need another movie about bullied kids that are telling bullied kids that once you have power, violence is the only solution? I saw this yesterday with my kids. It actually answered my questions. You CAN do a good movie that shows how a good kid would use his new-found powers. Internet fame and making some side money showing off are part of it. Even violence not being the only solution was addressed. Aquaman had a similar scene where the protagonist tries to talk the antagonist out of fighting. I think DC writers are starting to remember what being a hero is supposed to mean. The comedy in it is pretty funny too, even when playing on some of the tropes from other superhero films. P.S. For Walking Dead fans, Jerry has a pretty good role in the movie.
