Interesting to me that no one's mentioned the official release of Prison Architect and only one casual mention of Just Cause 3.

My problem with most new games is I just can't justify the full retail cost on a gamble it will be ok. Vs waiting to hear what people say and also getting it at a much cheaper price. I'm glad people are still ponying up full price and keeping the industry afloat, though!

Buying FO4 at release was an outlier, since I was out on disability and stuck on the couch, so it was totally worth it.

Most of the time I stick to the old favorites, Minecraft and TOR.

Looking through the playing thread, I change my #3 to 7 Days to Die.

I didn't buy much this year either, otherwise I might have had Fallout or Bloodborne on my list.

1. Witcher 3
2. Cities Skylines
3. Rocket League

Witcher 3 is the most enjoyable RPG I've ever played.

1) MGSV
2) Hearthstone
3) Witcher 3

#4 in case Hearthstone doesn't count
4) Rocket League - I could be talked into making this my #3

Honorable Mentions
Dying Light
Kings Quest - Might make the list once more episodes were out
Huniepop - Might disqualify my list
Cities Skylines
Mario Maker
FF Type-0 - Old but PC release this year
Talos Principal - Decmber 2014 but I played it this year

Still have a few that might be good and I bought but just haven't gotten a chance to play yet like Invis Inc, Shadow Run and Axiom Verge.

Yeah I played that more in 2015 than anything.

1. Diablo 3
2.  Hearthstone
3. the Star Citizen thread

I also played a ton of Heroes of the Storm.  Blizzard really knocked it out of the park this year, WoW aside.

In terms of 2015 releases:

1. Heroes of the Storm
2. Disgaea 5
3. Axiom Verge

Other games that I'm sure I'll like a bunch once they come down in price:  Fallout 4, MGS V, and Witcher 3.

most played:
X-Com LW
Warframe
PoE / Dota2 ?

I can't even talk about 2015 games. I don't buy anything anymore until the sequel comes out and its 75% off it feels like.

Yeah, I'm in the "nothing I played was released this year" boat.

Ditto, unless you want to start talking about cheap indie stuff nobody else is going to vote for.

Games I enjoyed most in 2015:
  • Heroes of the Storm
  • Shadow of Mordor
  • Styx: Master of Shadows

With "honorable mention nobody else is going to vote for" going to Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows, Dungeon of the Endless and Nuclear Throne.

Games released in 2015 I'm most looking forward to when they hit sale prices:
  • Metal Gear Solid 5
  • Fallout 4
  • Witcher 3

edit:

FF Type-0 - Old but PC release this year

I've been meaning to ask about that game.  I assumed it was garbage since I haven't heard anything about it.

I've been meaning to ask about that game.  I assumed it was garbage since I haven't heard anything about it.

It's an action game locked at 30 FPS and the console release of it suffered from some really terrible motion blur.

It's said to be a really solid game that's held back by the fact that it's a port of a port.

I started trying to write up something to defend that one but I mean it parts of it are pretty much are garbage.  It's an old handheld game on PC and it's super grindy.  Still, once I gave it a chance I really got into it.  The combat system, the array of unique characters and the multi play though design make it an interesting FF game.  I'd probably cut it if I made a second pass on my list though  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

The 30 FPS and the motion blur didn't bother me on my monitor.  I'm pretty sure it had blur settings under options as well.

1. Witcher 3 - this shit all over Fallout 4 in terms of quality
2. Heroes of the Storm - it did what Blizzard set out to do and is a fun drop-in, drop-out game that took on Dota2 and LoL and has carved a niche.
3. Whatever Telltale pu out this year - Tales from the Borderlands/Game of Thrones. The former wins hands down for me

Shout out to Armoured Warfare and Darkest Dungeon for not quite releasing yet.

Props to World of Warships but fuck that grind - tweak the grind and I might stay interested.

Game that got the shit played out of it: Diablo 3. They keep tuning this to make it fun. Proof that you can polish a turd until it comes good.

Fuck Fallout 4, that game needed a lot more polish.

That reflects my own M.O.

That said, I am running with my PS4 so the games I played most this year:
GTA V
Shadow of Mordor
TESO

Life is Strange -- all the feels, but also very competent execution. probably first game where episodic release enhanced the experience rather than hurt it, and they managed to deliver each episode on good schedule with little to no delays.

Rule the Waves -- counting rivets on WW1 warships, wrapped in windows 95 UI. it made me make goddamn charts for my game. Ultimate grognard experience, as far as i'm concerned why so serious?

Witcher 3 -- doesn't really need explanation now, does it.

1) Witcher 3
2) Pillars of Eternity
3) Shadowrun: Hong Kong

The reality is most of this year was Warframe, Minecraft, and Final Fantasy 14, although the last dropped the ball hard with the expansion so I can't even include that on the list for stuff from this year.  Was a good year for rpgs though.

I'm wondering if I have Witcher 3 on disk.  That might explain why I've ignored it.

Also I didn't finish the first two.

Fallout 4
GTAV
Rebel Galaxy

...and yea, that's pretty much most of what I played all year aside from some dabbling around with Forza 6 and the Rare Replay collection.

You can pretty safely skip them honestly.  You'll miss some of the story references, but given that they also reference the novels, they tended to go out of their way to either backfill story for you in dialog or put it in the journals.

Witcher 3 because it suits sophisticated European tastes.

Ori and the Blind Forest because it's the best platforming action in ages, plus the cutest story ever.

Metal Gear Solid V because I never could have imagined Kojima had such a great open world shooter in him.

edit: Bloodborne might've been here but I never got around to buying a PS4. Too many games to play anyway.

Kerbal Space Program, the game I've spent the most time on and had probably the most fun with.
Ori and the Blind Forest, the game I bought a controller for and dragged my computer to the living room to play it on my 55 inch TV.
Bloodbourne, because I need to nominate another 2015 release I've played.

I have such a huge backlog that I haven't really played that many 2015 releases and I still haven't even started playing MGS V or Fallout 4.

Honorable, "best game from ages ago I've played this year" award goes to Dark Souls.

Counter Strike: Global Offensive.

If we can vote for games that didn't come out this year but I personally only started playing in 2015 then yes CS:GO would get my vote. The best implementation of a online FPS I've seen (in its limited scope).

W3 is pretty cool but maybe not everyone has played Rocket League or are overthinking things.  It's great in many of the same ways that Portal was great.
