Title: f13 Game of the Year 2015 - Let's see how cynical we still are.
Post by: Falconeer on December 14, 2015, 03:41:01 AM
They always try to tell us what was best. Let's all agree to disagree on our own terms this year.

3 names. From best to second best and third best. I'll compile results in a couple of weeks.

Mine:

1 - Fallout 4
2 - Bloodborne
3 - Disgaea 5

2. Witcher 3
3. Undertale

I actually think it's been a pretty decent year.

1) GTA 5 - didn't the PC version come out in 2015?  A masterpiece, IMO.  First game I have actually finished in probably 40 bajillion years.
2) Fallout 4 tentatively gets the number two spot.
3) Tied between Bloodborne and MGS5.

I am getting super curious about PoE, now that I am starting to see it on sale everywhere.

1. Fallout 4 (mostly for all the potential it has with the modding)
2. World of Warships (best online game of 2015 for me)
3. Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition (best "upgrade" to existing game of 2015)

All in all I haven't gotten to many of the new games of 2015 yet (like Pillars of Eternity, GTA5, Witcher 3) which would have filled spots 2 and 3 in all likelihood.

Here's (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_in_video_gaming#Game_releases) a list of 2015 game releases. I bought very few this year and 2 of the new releases I bought (CODBLOPS3, Just Cause 3) I've played less than an hour of so far so I can't really count them. Which means my list has to go:

1. Fallout 4
2. MGS V
3. Kerbal Space Program - which officially launched as 1.0 this year. Not sure if that counts or not.

I spent most of my gaming time this year playing long RPG's like Witcher 3, Fallout 4, and Bloodborne (in addition to a lot of Hex for a while and Rocksmith). I hate leaving games unfinished and by the end of all three of those RPG's I was playing them almost grudgingly. There's stuff that came out this year like Mario Maker, Until Dawn, and Undertale that had some buzz and that I'd like to put some time into, but I don't think I really played enough different games this year to name anything GOTY.

Underrail is coming out in 4 days... hnnng. Still in the habit of not buying AAA games at launch, so this list is pretty indie-heavy.

1. Invisible Inc.
2. Shadowrun: Hong Kong
3. Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition (if re-releases are not allowed, add Telepath Tactics instead)

edit: It's been a pretty good year for RPGs, if nothing else! Pillars of Eternity would've beaten much of the crap we got in the last decade or so, but this year it was just enough for a #4 spot.

In order of:

1) Div:EE because of the substantial improvements and because how fun this game is if played together with a friend

2) Hongkong: Story & (most of the) Writing and Soundtrack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYZNPeYjAf4). Was just good entertaiment.

3) Pillars: Not that far into the game yet (just reached the homestead/keep), but so far somewhere between decent and good.

2015 was kind of a rough year.

1. Disgaea 5 - Story wasn't as good as D3 but the mechanics are much better. Hands down winner for me.
2. Persona 4: Dancing All Night - A great rhythm game with an AMAZING soundtrack that lets me dress up mai waifus.
3. Huniepop - I totally forgot this came out this year. Played the hell out of it, unlocked everything except a few outfits and hairstyles.
3. Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: Fafnir Knight - Despite being a remake, this game was still a blast. There's enough new content (plus it's been 7 years) that it feels like a new game.

Nothing else hooked me to the point of finishing it, really. Story of Seasons gets an honorable mention, as does Marvel Heroes but despite them calling in MH2015 it actually came out a while ago so it doesn't seem fair.

Edit: New #3, I forgot Huniepop was a thing.

At least for me.

1. Undertale
2. Shadowrun: Hong Kong
3. I dunno, Witcher 3 I guess? Maybe Celestian Tales?

I don't even own 1. Bloodborne
2. Metal Gear Solid V to spite Thief reboots sucking forever, also stealth-punching children
3. Odallus because I couldn't justify paying for any more goddamn videogames after the hojillionth Steam sale HD remaster bundle that I'll never play anyway

This year can suck a butt. Madden Fallout 4 was fun for a while but really in the worst ways. The shambling, worm-ridden corpse of your best friend who just wants a few more rounds of Super Smash Bros. before collapsing into a lumpy heap on your living room carpet.

The only 2015 game I bought was Witcher 3. And I don't think it's a game of the year because of the combat.

1. Witcher 3
2. Shadowrun Hong Kong
3. Fallout 4 (pending Design Fuckups being modded out)

If I treated Fallout 4 as it is now, I'd have to give Pillars of Eternity the nod instead.

Hmm.  I'm trying to think of games I've played that are actually 2015 releases.  I'm coming up with Fallout 4, Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void, Cities: Skylines and Heroes of the Storm.

I think I have to give it to Cities: Skylines.

I actually haven't played it for that many hours, but it does everything I like, does it well, doesn't have a stupid DLC monetization plan, has great support for modding, and it really stands out against the piece of garbage Sim City that was released a couple of years ago.

The game I played the most this year was probably Diablo 3, but that's hardly a 2015 release.

In no particular order, these are the games I've played the most in 2015.

Minecraft (especially modded Minecraft)
Diablo 3 (which became a great game after the update where they removed the AH)
Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword. (also modded)

My entries are not numbered because they're auto DQ anyway; none of them came out this year.
I don't think I've played any games that actually came out in 2015.

I'd put Darkest Dungeon in here, except it's still in early access. Maybe it can be on next year's list

I scanned a list of releases trying to find something other than a AAA title that hooked me this year. Not a great year in games. Tempted to put Huniepop on there in protest.

1) MGS V:TPP
2) Fallout 4
3) Witcher 3

I'm not sure I played enough this year.  I mostly played multiplayer games that were released in previous years.

1.  FFXIV: Heavensward (including the 2.0 experience in here)
2.  Warframe
3.  Fallout 4

So, I guess if you go pure 2015 experience, it's Fallout 4.  I enjoy the game and all, but it's not exactly GOY material.  Revised list:

1.  You'll get nothing
2.  And
3.  Like it

Heh, I toyed with writing up everything I played this year in a sort of timeline.  I think it might fit under a page if I keep everything to a paragraph.

3. Invisible, Inc (I think it's the only other new game I played this year?)

1. MGS5
2. Invisible Inc.
3. I'd like to say KSP, but I think I played more of that before 2015 than this year... Let's go with Else Heart.Break() then. At least that's unique enough and actually came out this year.

Sometimes I opted just to go to bed.  We're getting old(er).

I had a lot going on.  Not that it necessarily meant I had less time to game, but that buying new games and playing everything right now took a back seat to just getting through the year.

Ah, OK, this is doable.  Nothing this year has really tickled my soft bits such that I feel it deserves being on a list.  Things that I've spent more than 60 minutes playing this year:
Destiny
Borderlands Moon Shit
Fallout 4
Disgaea 5
Diablo 3/Path of Exile (YEAH WHAT OF IT)
Rogue Legacy

I was trying to figure out what 2. and 3. would be, but like Schild said, I really only played maybe 5-6 games this whole year.

1. ROCKET LEAGUE (by a large margin)

2. Undertale
3. I want to put Fallout 4 here.

My problem with most new games is I just can't justify the full retail cost on a gamble it will be ok. Vs waiting to hear what people say and also getting it at a much cheaper price. I'm glad people are still ponying up full price and keeping the industry afloat, though!

Buying FO4 at release was an outlier, since I was out on disability and stuck on the couch, so it was totally worth it.

Most of the time I stick to the old favorites, Minecraft and TOR.

Looking through the playing thread, I change my #3 to 7 Days to Die.

I didn't buy much this year either, otherwise I might have had Fallout or Bloodborne on my list.

1. Witcher 3
2. Cities Skylines
3. Rocket League

Witcher 3 is the most enjoyable RPG I've ever played.

1) MGSV
2) Hearthstone
3) Witcher 3

#4 in case Hearthstone doesn't count
4) Rocket League - I could be talked into making this my #3

Honorable Mentions
Dying Light
Kings Quest - Might make the list once more episodes were out
Huniepop - Might disqualify my list
Cities Skylines
Mario Maker
FF Type-0 - Old but PC release this year
Talos Principal - Decmber 2014 but I played it this year

Still have a few that might be good and I bought but just haven't gotten a chance to play yet like Invis Inc, Shadow Run and Axiom Verge.

Other games that I'm sure I'll like a bunch once they come down in price:  Fallout 4, MGS V, and Witcher 3.

Yeah, I'm in the "nothing I played was released this year" boat.

Ditto, unless you want to start talking about cheap indie stuff nobody else is going to vote for.

Games I enjoyed most in 2015:
  • Heroes of the Storm
  • Shadow of Mordor
  • Styx: Master of Shadows

With "honorable mention nobody else is going to vote for" going to Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows, Dungeon of the Endless and Nuclear Throne.

Games released in 2015 I'm most looking forward to when they hit sale prices:
  • Metal Gear Solid 5
  • Fallout 4
  • Witcher 3

edit:

FF Type-0 - Old but PC release this year

I've been meaning to ask about that game.  I assumed it was garbage since I haven't heard anything about it.

FF Type-0 - Old but PC release this year

I've been meaning to ask about that game.  I assumed it was garbage since I haven't heard anything about it.

It's an action game locked at 30 FPS and the console release of it suffered from some really terrible motion blur.

It's said to be a really solid game that's held back by the fact that it's a port of a port.

FF Type-0 - Old but PC release this year

I've been meaning to ask about that game.  I assumed it was garbage since I haven't heard anything about it.

I started trying to write up something to defend that one but I mean it parts of it are pretty much are garbage.  It's an old handheld game on PC and it's super grindy.  Still, once I gave it a chance I really got into it.  The combat system, the array of unique characters and the multi play though design make it an interesting FF game.  I'd probably cut it if I made a second pass on my list though

The 30 FPS and the motion blur didn't bother me on my monitor.  I'm pretty sure it had blur settings under options as well.

1. Witcher 3 - this shit all over Fallout 4 in terms of quality
2. Heroes of the Storm - it did what Blizzard set out to do and is a fun drop-in, drop-out game that took on Dota2 and LoL and has carved a niche.
3. Whatever Telltale pu out this year - Tales from the Borderlands/Game of Thrones. The former wins hands down for me

Shout out to Armoured Warfare and Darkest Dungeon for not quite releasing yet.

Props to World of Warships but fuck that grind - tweak the grind and I might stay interested.

Game that got the shit played out of it: Diablo 3. They keep tuning this to make it fun. Proof that you can polish a turd until it comes good.

Fuck Fallout 4, that game needed a lot more polish.

Life is Strange -- all the feels, but also very competent execution. probably first game where episodic release enhanced the experience rather than hurt it, and they managed to deliver each episode on good schedule with little to no delays.

Rule the Waves -- counting rivets on WW1 warships, wrapped in windows 95 UI. it made me make goddamn charts for my game. Ultimate grognard experience, as far as i'm concerned :why_so_serious:

Witcher 3 -- doesn't really need explanation now, does it.

1) Witcher 3
2) Pillars of Eternity
3) Shadowrun: Hong Kong

The reality is most of this year was Warframe, Minecraft, and Final Fantasy 14, although the last dropped the ball hard with the expansion so I can't even include that on the list for stuff from this year.  Was a good year for rpgs though.

You can pretty safely skip them honestly.  You'll miss some of the story references, but given that they also reference the novels, they tended to go out of their way to either backfill story for you in dialog or put it in the journals.

Witcher 3 because it suits sophisticated European tastes.

Ori and the Blind Forest because it's the best platforming action in ages, plus the cutest story ever.

Metal Gear Solid V because I never could have imagined Kojima had such a great open world shooter in him.

edit: Bloodborne might've been here but I never got around to buying a PS4. Too many games to play anyway.

Kerbal Space Program, the game I've spent the most time on and had probably the most fun with.
Ori and the Blind Forest, the game I bought a controller for and dragged my computer to the living room to play it on my 55 inch TV.
Bloodbourne, because I need to nominate another 2015 release I've played.

I have such a huge backlog that I haven't really played that many 2015 releases and I still haven't even started playing MGS V or Fallout 4.

Honorable, "best game from ages ago I've played this year" award goes to Dark Souls.

I've read a bit more and given more thought to this puzzle.  Can anyone present an argument against Rocket League being the winner?

If we can vote for games that didn't come out this year but I personally only started playing in 2015 then yes CS:GO would get my vote. The best implementation of a online FPS I've seen (in its limited scope).

Lots of support for Witcher 3. Looks unofficially in a 'didn't do the math because I'm lazy' way like: Witcher 3, Rocket League, Fallout 4.

W3 is pretty cool but maybe not everyone has played Rocket League or are overthinking things.  It's great in many of the same ways that Portal was great.

My games of the year for the past few have all been older releases I've just gone in on in a big way. XCOM is the only exception to that I can recall.

I feel compelled to add MGS V as a late entry into my 2015 rankings. Waited for it to go on sale, and thoroughly enjoying it after 10+ hours of game play.

hurm. Games I've played and enjoyed in 2015.

1) Fallout 4, as something actually released in 2015 has to be here. Not that I've gotten very far so far.
2) World of Tanks.
3) Destiny: TFK
4) Max Payne 3
5) Sniper Elite 3 (because full co-op)
6) Far Cry 4 (because almost full co-op)

That'll do, I guess...

Started playing Dishonoroured GOTY and thats a pretty good Game.

Other than that I'd put World of Warships. Minecraft, The Secret World and Elite as the ganes I really enjoyed this year. I'll probbaly pick up Dragon age II on a sale at some point.

Dude, I just now harpooned the driver off a speeding enemy truck, pulled him off and he flew straight into another enemy truck and got wedged in its wheels, causing it to flip and erupt in a fireball.

GOTY.

Something zany happened in a sandbox game. Wow.

Game is low effort garbage. The driving is fun in spots; the rest is stapled on, poorly executed filler. The game never rises above the first couple hours.  It's about worth maybe 5-10 hours of fun, each hour less than the previous.

I don't begrudge someone having a bit of fun with it, but if GOTY follows your mentioning of the game, you might have shitty taste in games (yes, this includes TotalBiscuit's list).

I didn't know my personal GOTY was so prestigious that it causes controversy.  :why_so_serious:

I guess it's how Mad Max exceeded my expectations, while everything else did the opposite. MGSV sharted in the end, Witcher 3 groans under its own bloat and Ori just isn't enough to be on top.

It's alright, but not particularly good. I got really bored 3/4 of the way through and haven't touched it since. The repetitive stuff should have spawned another villain: Tedious Maximus.

I finished it just now, the ending was really bad. It had a good idea, but the execution sucked. It was one of those Fallout 3 esque things where in game you have an obvious solution but in the cutscene it mysteriously disappears and instead you're forced to do something really dumb.
