The implication being that if she had decided to go work in the mines and just smoke instead then she'd be on target for 90+... The comparison is a bit  Both my grandfathers smoked heavily; one got emphysema and did not make it to the age of 90. The other is smoked into his 90s but a recent stroke has forced him to stop. It strikes me as a bit silly to imply that you have to do anything especialy stupid to have an impact on your health, just because Endie's GGF and my GF made it to 90 while smoking doesn't mean much of anything. People can have health issues at a much younger age without having to make a conserted effort to ruin themselves. I understand it was probably a trivial comment and I'm taking it too seriously, but... fuck smoking and anything that even indrectly indicates it's not as dangerous for your health as it is. |

Um, it's pretty simple: Winehouse has managed to do to herself by her 20s what it took a heavily smoking miner, born in the nineteenth century and living in a damp, mildew-ridden house with primitive medical care over eighty years to replicate. Edit - oh I read your later comment and I see that it wasn't lack of understanding, but just your militant anti-smoking hurf-blurfing. Which is idiotic since they both smoke, so you have to be pretty obtuse to claim that I was proposing smoking (or mining, or living in a bacteria-laden environment, or going back in time to get your medical care frmo the Edwardians) as the control element and a healthy cure for what ails you.  |
