From http://gizmodo.com/the-ashley-madison-hackers-just-released-all-of-their-s-1724920693

Quote
Well, this should be interesting. Hackers who claim to have stolen data from Ashley Madison, the dating site for cheaters, recently posted nearly 10-gigabytes of said stolen data. That includes member email addresses, credit card transactions, and even profiles. This should be very interesting.

The data can be found on the dark web, and those who’ve already downloaded it say they’re finding all kinds of juicy gossip. (One person searched for British government emails, for instance.) The hackers themselves, however, don’t seem at all miffed about this massive release of purportedly private and possibly damaging information. Because Ashley Madison’s parent company, Avid Life Media, refused the hackers’ demand to take down the site, they don’t think the users deserve privacy.

The Ashley Madison Hackers Just Released a Ton of Stolen Data

Calling themselves the Impact Team, the hackers said:

We have explained the fraud, deceit, and stupidity of ALM and their members. Now everyone gets to see their data … Keep in mind the site is a scam with thousands of fake female profiles. See ashley madison fake profile lawsuit; 90-95% of actual users are male. Chances are your man signed up on the world’s biggest affair site, but never had one. He just tried to. If that distinction matters. …

Too bad for those men, they’re cheating dirtbags and deserve no such discretion. Too bad for ALM, you promised secrecy but didn’t deliver.…

Well at least they seem honest?

Here’s a screenshot of the full statement included with the release:

[Wired, Ars Technica]

Lots of links to the data and statements and stuff at the link.

Once again we are forced to call both sides assholes.

I'm just waiting to see what the media does with the information - and the circus that will follow.  So many divorces, law suits, political careers changed, etc....

2020 will be the year I gave up all hope.

Karma, and all that. Sneak around and lie, have your lies exposed by other dirty people.

Please, let's not feed the people behind this justifications for doing it. They're not defending marriage, they're motivated like the Joker in The Dark Knight: it's for the lulz.

Yeah the high level moralizing is kind of nauseating. That said, having some lulz at the expense of hypocrites and liars has been part of the human tradition for time immemorial.

Not exactly high moral ground but if they had just demanded a couple million dollars they probably would have got it, instead they wanted the site shut down.  Insert shitty hero we deserve meme.

Edit: Clarifying.

I have not seen a single news organization discuss the rampant fraud of having 90-95% male members, and mostly fake female profiles... Which to me is the larger and more "newsworthy" part of the release. CNN has spent 15 mins of every hour on this, and not a single mention of the site being fraud, but instead focusing on how the site was claiming "SEKRET" and instead had their complete anonymity destroyed.. I'd say it was literally impossible to cheat using that site if the only female profiles were fraudulent ones. Way to focus on the real story, dumbass news people.

I think that's old news.  Didn't one of the latest fad sites have to admit to sending "winks" from made up women as soon as a guy's membership lapsed/terminated?

So, apparently, Josh Duggar, child afficienado and family values advocate, had a paid AM account.  Color me shocked.

The concept of this site always just seemed to me to be a way for someone to make a "legitimate" site for "escorts" to search for/advertise to clients.

With all these 'family values' pundits, I suspect adultery will be the least scuzzy thing about them. My assumptions start at airport restroom stall foot tapping and work down from there.

Edit: I should clarify that I don't consider adultery 'better' than being gay; I'm just measuring things on their own scandal-o-meter.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

The problems with moralizing this and putting people on the cross:

  • "Identities" are commonly spoofed for sites like this, if only to maintain some anonymity.
  • People could be using sites as avenues to find consensually open sexual encounters.

Anyone in an open relationship using a site like this shouldn't be shamed by their name getting leaked; it's the cheating assholes who have something to be ashamed of.

I'm not even on the fence on this one :  The hack was utterly wrong and has no justification.  The site and business itself I care not one jot for nor have any moral problems with.  It's literally None of My Fucking Business.  I've been married for... er.... about 14 years or so and while I've never even touched another woman romantically in that time I can well understand that this type of thing actually might be fine and healthy for different people.  And, even if it isn't, please see the 'None of My Fucking Business' I suggested a moment ago.

Any publicity, shaming or negative shit that comes of this I am totally annoyed by, in the same way as the Fappening, but I will agree that having this as a business model and not having security to avoid this shit suggests that the business should fold.  Immediately.

Beyond that, I think we enter politics, where this should NOT go, since it's hardly worth it.

Im with Ironwood on that one. That is private business. And only the fact that the public makes that an issue gives those hypocritic advocates any political power. If everybody wouldn't care, these things couldn't be used as ammunition.

Fuck that, this is third person generated schadenfreude.

I'm only alive for 80 years. I demand extreme emotions in both directions from the rest of the population - which in this case, we will label as: My entertainment.

You can't take morals to your grave, dudes.

Edit: That said, I don't actually care about the politics side of this. I just like people's infidelities exposed based on the hilariously prude societal structure that was founded on unsound Christian ideals. Yea yea, I'm big on monogamy, but that's because two women would be too much work and I married "up" as they say.

Edit 2: Yea, I might be alive longer than 80 years. If the nicotine and caffeine doesn't get me, something else certainly will.

No, you can't.

As such:
Bravo to the boys that signed up for Ashley Madison.
Bravo to the girls that didn't and made it the world's largest sausage fest.
Bravo to the marriages that will be ruined while dudes were looking for strange that wasn't there.
Bravo to the Admins who don't know how to internet.
Bravo to the hackers who released this list.
Bravo to that Josh Dugger whoeverthefuckguy who is deeply religious white trash imploding in the national spotlight.

There are apparently many US military email address in there. Adultery can be punished by the military, including jail time.

There were profiles in there with credit card connecting information (for identity purposes) for homosexual relationships... in countries where that is punishable by death.

There are going to be a lot of divorce lawyers using this to drum up business. That means harassing calls to the spouses, whether that spouse forgave, or start a divorce already.

Many people cheat, in part, because they fear leaving their spouse. Some of them fear losing money or seeing their kids... but some fear that if their spouse found out they wanted out, they fear they'd be killed.

I work for a bank. My bank had more of their email addresses in there than any other US bank.

I'm curious how much worse a well filtered release of Facebook data would be.

My spam-mail address is on there. I signed up almost 6 years ago when they first appeared to see what was up. Amusingly I checked my spam folder on the spam email today and saw i was still getting them and the "meet these matches" are so pitifully fake I don't get how guys paid for it."

I wonder if anyone's going to contact the wife since it's trivially easy to connect me to the spam address after 17 years of signups.

I imagine they had some sort of free trial period?  You could probably only make a solid accusation once that email gives up a real, correct home address for the credit card validation.  Even then it could still be someone else, but they would have to know you.  If they have your email, home address and last four credit card digits though...

I wonder how they charged credit cards, did they use a made up business name?

From what I recall it's like any other dating site. Searches were free, viewing profiles beyond name/ age/ headshot and sending messages cost money.

Cheaters come up with brilliant ways of not getting caught. One of my former co-workers' sister was cheated on for years before she caught him. (insert typical, 'I came home early one day' story)  He was charging tools on the credit cards, returning them to Home Depot for cash and then using the cash to finance the affair. After hearing about something like that devised, coming up with a PO or having a separate CC bill sent to your office is a trivial matter.

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet within your power.
