I wouldn't say there's "more" to it, but it's not quite that.  Conan's more of the hero of his story, whereas things tend to happen AROUND Riddick and he just sort of kills anything that inconveniences him.

See, Pitch Black and Chronicles had pretty much fuck all to do with each other.  That's the strange thing.  Pitch Black was a stand alone story that wasn't even really about Riddick (he just turned out to be the best thing about it) and then they spun off some very, very weird shit around him.

PB is the better film for sure though and it also has Claudia in it.  Oh yes.  Not Inconsiderably so.

He does at time seem to have important moral decisions and he seems to make the right choices.  It's like a "good guy inside a rapist" teaser.

I totally forgot Claudia was in PB.  I need to watch that again.  Claudia does strange things to me.

I'll have to rewatch the first two movies, I can't remember much except I liked pitch black more than the 2nd.

Don't forget to watch the anime series too.

Looks almost like a remake of Pitch Black.  Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

Except the other characters don't look remotely as interesting as the ones from Pitch Black.
I'll watch it, but I don't think it's going to be as 'fresh' as Pitch Black was when it came out.

I rewatched the first two movies, I remember the first as good but I enjoyed the 2nd one too, so I'm looking forward to the new one.

I have serious Boneitis for all the ladies mentioned except for Maggie Gyllenhall.  She did have a couple of sexy scenes in The Secretary though.

Count me in the Riddick fan club.  The Conan comparison is fairly decent.  The first movie was 'The Hobbit' and the second was all three LOTR books combined.  Plus, Dame Judi Dench slumming for a paycheck.  Or maybe paycheque.

Good to see Starbuck get work.  She cleans up real good.

I'm down.  Enjoyed the first two.

PB was probably the better movie, but I still ended up really liking the second movie for the crazy lore/setting.  Its probably the closest we're ever going to get of live action Warhammer 40K for the foreseeable future.

Although it had some goofy shit in it, Chronicles is one of those movies I appreciate because it actually has some cool sci-fi/space opera stuff in it that doesn't make it into films all that much these days. Not all that interested in another Pitch Black (although I liked that too on its own terms, plus Claudia!) as that is mostly just action/horror tropes.

I feel deeply depressed that this thread has already reached 2 pages. Pitch Black was a nice little throw-away scifi actioner with a vaguely interesting anti-hero lead, but it was what it was and required nothing more.

Chronicles of Riddick proved beyond a doubt that Pitch Black was where it should have stopped. Literally one of the worst movies I've ever had to pay money to see, ranked alongside AvP and the first Dungeons & Dragons movie (I couldn't say anything about the sequels to those films as I simply wouldn't give those bottom feeders responsible any more encouragement). I understand the concept of a vanity project but why pick one that makes you look so fucking bad?

The key difference is Riddick isn't switching genres on an existing beloved IP.

I can't ever take f13 seriously when it comes to anything even remotely related to movies, books or music. However, this place is still my go to for rock solid gaming information/opinions, political conversation, and useless discussion. Oh yeah can't forget current events.  Movie reviews...from here...foooooget aboutit.

To stay on topic, this movie looks awesome, and yes I will enjoy Riddick killing shit without nerdfucking the movie to death because it isn't realistic enough.

I'm with Mattemeo; Pitch Black was good while Chronicles was shitty and we didn't need any more Riddick. I don't really like Vin much as an actor though, so I'm biased.

I kind of agree.  Pitch Black was fun for kind of being a small movie with a forced setting operating in very limited constraints.  But it never needed a sequel.  The natural inclination of sequels is to go bigger and louder, which is exactly the opposite of what made Pitch Black entertaining.

I kind of agree, with the caveat that it was a bad movie and most of the cool stuff didn't work.

But I do appreciate that it was not an established IP and had a pretty unique and ambitious vision. There is a good movie buried in there somewhere, it just didn't emerge due to execution issues.

I like Pitch Black well enough, will watch Chronicles if it comes on, and at least one of the AvP movies (the first one, I think) is also entertaining.
