From Reddit, watching the end of Ep 9 with non readers...

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

I haven't read past book 3, but I think it's pretty clear that Jon Snow and Dany will marry and ride dragons into the "last battle" with the Necromancer from the north who is animating all those corpses.

But Snow is so bland and actively dislike Dany.

I think I want Sansa to snap at the loss of her family and become an iron fisted ruler. Sort of Galadriel meets Stalin.

I was going to say what I want the ending to be, but this is the illiterate thread and some of it would be spoilery.  (Although the series has already pretty strongly foreshadowed the directions that certain characters will be taking.)

Which at this pace will happen in about 5 years, if then.

The next book might be done in five years so there is no way the story can end that fast on TV, unless they start making shit up.

I read somewhere that Martin will provide the TV show with the plotting for the latter books before they come out if it comes to that.

According to Wikipedia he is only 64. He looks worse than that though. Who knows how long he will be around.

The producer, Frank Doelger, said in an interview in Rolling Stone that they hope to end with season 7.

Quote
"[The number of series] is being discussed as we speak. The third season was the first half of book three, season four will be the second part of book three. . . George R.R. Martin has written books four and five; six and seven are pending," Doelger told Radio Times at the BAFTA Awards last weekend. "I would hope that, if we all survive and if the audience stays with us, we'll probably get through to seven seasons."

My problem with Jon Snow and Daenerys is that they're both being played by pretty bad actors. Emilia Clarke has an easier time of it because her character is awesome, and I think Kit Harington has improved a bit since the start, but if it does end up being all about them then they're going to need to get a bit more life about them IMO.

I hope the whole thing ends with the world being covered in snow and ice and the last few people gathered around a dying fire (and with a fade into black and the words "winter is here" in the tv version)  why so serious?

Watched it with my brother last night, he's only halfway through book one so it was a surprise for him, even though he had heard at work that a bunch of people died.  I told him after it was over that I would have cared more if anyone I actually liked had been killed.  He mostly agreed, but that it was still f'd up.  I told him he best hang on to his hat, because people would be dropping like flies in the next 4 books.

Fat men who walk with canes by 64 do not live long.  He won't see the end of the series and he's publicly stated he's left instructions for his wife to burn his notes because he doesn't want a Jordan pulled on him.  (Truth of that or if she will is debatable.)

Didn't he tell the show producers how he sees the series ending?  Seems to run counter to wanting his notes torched.

Thanks to all the very subtle OH JUST YOU WAIT from everyone but mostly my wife, who eats spoilers with a spoon, this went about as well as I expected.  The stitching was a nice unexpected touch.  But really, I think what surprised me most was to be told that Tywin was responsible.  Even though I probably should have known.

Are the books so laden with foreshadowing?  BECAUSE I GET IT.

The books are written in such a way that if you reread them after knowing what happens you can't help but think "how the fuck did i not see this coming, it's foreshadowed like a million times".  But the first time you are always shocked.

The books had enough foreshadowing that I knew shit was going down at the wedding.  The only suspense for me was the hope that Robb and/or the North in general would make it out alive.  Nope!

If I had only watched the TV series without seeing everyone go apeshit about the episode beforehand, I don't see how I could have seen all that coming until the guy walks over and ominously closes the door.

In retrospect, I think it's pretty obvious that A) Robb and Catelyn had systematically alienated almost all of their allies by doing stupid shit and B) Frey is a cunt of the highest order and not to be trusted.  But as has been said, the genius is that while you COULD have seen it coming, you most likely didn't, because you want to think the story is going to be about Robb avenging Ned and beating the bad guy.  Nope!

I think even if you'd got used to him killing a Stark, you wouldn't expect him to off two in such a short period of time, one scene.

Three.  Four, from a certain PoV.  I think the fact that it starts with the chick getting stabbed right in the baby bump is a big part of the shock value of the scene.  They aren't just revenging a slight and a broken oath, they're quite deliberately wiping out House Stark (as far as they know, Sansa is the only survivor).

Thought about spoilering that, but if you haven't watched it by now, there's no way you're uncontaminated.

No precedent or foreshadowing for that whatsoever.   awesome, for real

But yeah, even though it makes perfect sense in the narrative, you don't expect the writer to do something like that -- you expect some sort of convenient plot device to save the heroes.  IMO Martin gets a bad rap for going out of his way to kill his characters -- I think it's more accurate that he doesn't go out of his way to keep them alive.

He has been going out of his way to make anybody remotely on the side of good fail horribly, however, which is annoying because I've been able to predict how every god damned event will play out since Storm.  He needs to break cliche and let a good guy win for once!  That would be the only truly shocking thing he could pull off at this point.

Not that there are very many left.

Well, I was well aware of all that as we went along.  Just from the show I knew Frey was a dirtbag, and Robb was making a critical mistake by crossing him.  I also recognized Robb, of course, had been basically bumbling to victory anyway and his mistakes caught up with him.  No, I completely agree that Martin doesn't seem to be killing off people so much as he doesn't save them via deus ex machina or something else along that line.  Although there is a bit of both I think.  I'm completely on board with the Starks losing the Game because they ultimately aren't really playing it properly, unlike most everyone else.

I'm now fearing for Varys since he's done his revenge bit and is starting to look like a good guy, but maybe he'll not lose his senses.
