He'll buy it, play it for a while and then spend a couple years bitching about it.

That made me chuckle.  awesome, for real

Power Grid is a better Monopoly.

Cards Against Humanity is a million times better than Apples to Apples and exactly the same.

I understand, but do realize we do also play family friendly games that don't require too much thought, but are still miles above monopoly. Ticket to Ride comes to mind.

Whatever, if it works and makes you happy, great. I just have this strong personal hatred for Monopoly - because it really is a shitty game.

Ticket to Ride is certainly easier than Monopoly. Power Grid is about the same level as Monopoly if people want to think.

Monopoly is just the ghetto of gaming.

I've played Ticket to Ride. I find it to be not fun. Again, different strokes.

I'll just be over here in my gaming ghetto, apparently offending people with my choice of fun.  Ohhhhh, I see.

Go read the boardgame thread and ask for some real games.

Meh, I like what I like. You can keep your manly-awesome-real thread about geeks playing war games. Merry Christmas!

Until you've sat up drunk playing Apples to Apples, you haven't lived.  Yes, there are more complex games, but sometimes I want to make cheesy jokes about JFK.

Get the travel edition, P.  You'll find more uses for it.   Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Edit:  Cards Against Humanity, you say?  I might pick that up for the girlfriend...she loves A2A.

Cards against humanity is awesome. The people who made it even allow you to download it for free which is really convenient when you're outside the US.

Cards Against Humanity is the same concept as Apples to Apples, but instead of being like "Distinguished" -> "Bonbons" it's like "I drink to forget" -> "Two midgets shitting in a bucket".

Excellent.  I already play that way anyway.  My favorite one was G. W. Bush and playing AIDS.

Have you tried Carcassone?  It's about the closest gateway drug to becoming a boardgame geek there is.

I've slowly gotten my family into TTR, Carcassone and Catan.  I think I'm getting my kid Castle Panic for Christmas, looks fun.

You know what games sucks and I can't stand playing it?  Clue.  Especially the newer version with the hours rules and all that bullshit.

Settlers of Catan is the game I'd put up as an example of a Monopoly-style "acquire and build" game done well.  It's easier and more accessible than Monopoly in many respects, because you don't have as much crap to keep track of.   At the same time, though, there are more opportunities to make interesting choices, which makes it more of a game IMO.

That said, I can understand how if you've made a family tradition out of playing Chutes and Ladders, it's less about the game itself and more about the fact that you're sitting around a table doing the thing you always do.  I think it's kind of a shame that the "classic" family board games are mostly terrible as far as games go, though.

I agree with you Samwise, but as soon as I said the word "Settlers of..." my family would be off to go get more wine and play with the puzzle in the corner.

My 7 year old has won almost every game of Carcassone we play with her, and we don't go easy on her with games anymore.

If you've played Catan, they're both good starts to being boardgame geeks. Where Catan requires a long play strategy that builds across the whole game, Carcassone can be played on a per-turn basis with much less concentration on the long game.  Especially if you play sans farmers.

If they just don't get it, then that's cool.  But if you know someone with Carcassone, I'd see if you can borrow it to try.

I was surprised my football & beer buddy sat through an entire tutorial I gave him on Bloodbowl. He really picked it up quickly and was way into the blood part (of course!). When I explained how the orcs play, he asked me to paint them in Chicago Bears colors. Sometimes people just dig the theme enough to get hooked by the mechanics.

Boy I am thankful my family is easy to shop for.  Between the wine, LEGOS , more wine, coffee maker, toaster oven, and box of Washington Apples I am all set.  Now me on the other hand....

I do not need anything...  Maybe a nice bottle of whiskey / food.

Where's the thread to sell shit?  I figured someone may want a nice crossbow for xmas.  How does that not make this the right thread?

I got Lister a butterfly in a jar and Magenta a flashing firefly mat.  My sister's dog, Loki, gets a plush toy to rip apart every Xmas.  This year it's a gecko and a purple dinosaur.  Now that my brother in law's parents go to Florida for Xmas, I'm free to give her a plush baby Jesus when I actually find one.  It would be great if it squeaks.

I gave a former coworker all of the STDs a few years back. Ran into her and her boyfriend (who I know) at a wedding recently and the first thing he said to me was, "thanks for giving my woman herpes". People not in on the joke freaked out a bit. Good times.

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail
