FYI for those necros out there, the enter death shroud is the same ability as exit death shroud.  What that means is that if you are in PVP (or any other frantic situation) and you need to enter death shroud, PRESS THE BUTTON ONLY ONCE.  When you press it twice before you enter death shroud you will enter than exit death shroud, and be stuck with a 3-4 second cooldown......

This pissed me off to no end yesterday in pvp.

You can have spaces and surnames which helps a bit, but since names are game global... yeah, going to be a fair bit of competition.
I love the ability to put spaces in, I'm only using two of my traditional names, was able to use 3 new ones because of differing surnames!

Though there probably aren't a ton of Zebulons.

To contribute a basic one - wish I had known the bank was a shared bank across the account!

It is just the general bank area, and not the collections, right? I meant to test that last night and got distracted.

Hey guys,
Let me open up with a quote from Jim Boer (Arenanet Employee) about this.
No matter how fantastic a game’s music is, when you hear the same music for the thousandth time, you start wanting to change things up a bit. Many players will simply turn the game music off and play their own collections. The problem is that an external music player has no context as to what’s going on in-game. Guild Wars 2 will offer a solution for this as well. We’re giving players the option of choosing external music playlists that the game’s audio engine will use as a replacement for the default in-game music. Players can choose different playlists for background ambience and battle music, for instance. Additionally, when appropriate, such as during cinematics, the game can revert back to in-game music temporarily to give the best possible cinematic experience, then resume the custom playlist when it’s done. Did you know you can replace the (awesome) music in the game and substitute it with your own? -Jim Boer
This a feature in the game that in my opinion does not recieve enough recognition.
Here's how you do it:
Go to you documents folder -> Guild Wars 2 -> Music.
Create a playlist using your favorite media player.
The music files have to be in a format that FMOD supports by default: .mp3, .ogg, .flac, .wav, .aiff, .mid, .it etc.
The playlist formats that are supported are: .wpl, .m3u, .pls, .asx, and .wax
To play your playlists you have to give it a specific name. The playlist names that are currently recognized by the game are:
Ambient
Battle
Underwater
City
MainMenu
NightTime
Crafting
BossBattle
So if you have a playlist in the Guild Wars 2 Music folder called 'City', this playlist will start to play when you are in Hoelsbrak! Awesome!
Hope this little guide helps you!
Please enjoy!

FYI, if you make a custom playlist you need to have the first song be a 1 second blank song.  Each time it changes the playlist  it plays the first track and then randomizes from there.

So I can dump all my ingredients into the bank on one character and have another craft with them? If they ever get crafting straight out of the bank into the game it will be AMAZING.

Someone mentioned before that they didn't know how much health they had because of the scaling.  FYI, the hero menu (H) shows your total stats and your effective stats at the same time (green are your effective/scaled down stats and white are your real stats).

A note about vistas - the earlier ones are typically straightforward with an obvious path to follow, but some in Lornar's Pass (the one in the SW corner and the one near the griffons in the east) were pretty tricky. If you've been trying for several minutes to make a "tricky" jump without any luck, look for an alternate path. You shouldn't need swiftness and 'cheaty' movement skills like ride the lightning / jump shot to get to any vistas (though they can help, sometimes).

Also, if you're standing on a POI and it doesn't unlock, check the map for an elevation sign next to the POI. It's probably going to be under you (arrow pointing down), and you need to find a cavern or underwater tunnel to get there.

A big thing alot of people seem to be making a mistake with is playing only the content that is pretty much fed to you.
There's alot of "easter-eggy" stuff (and events like spawning special mobs) that you can activate by talking to npcs and actually doing the stuff they talk about which are not so apparent.
(ie. there seems to be a place where /kneel-emote and /say-ing a certain name trigger stuff...)

For now I'm enjoying the game alot finding lots of small stuff (though spoiler sites etc will spoil the fun soon enough since I can't help wondering about all that I'm missing swamp poop )

You can swap in a new a bag by dropping it on an existing one.  All the stuff in the old bag will migrate to the new bag automagically.

I would assume GW2 is gonna have birthday presents for your characters like GW1 did, eventually they become extremely valuable so fill up those roster spots now rather than later.

To respond with something useful:

You can take two professions.  Covering both your armor (armorsmith/leathercrafting/tailor) and weapons (weaponsmith/huntsman/artifacer) will be very difficult on materials (trading post being down doesn't help either), especially when you get to the tier that requires 8 blue drops per item creation.  I've tried to do that on two characters, but am having a much easier time ONLY focusing on my armor creation.  It will skill up faster than a weapon craft with more pieces that are personally usable.  Jewelcraft can be skilled up nicely in parallel though, and makes 5 usable equipment pieces.  I've limited my karma purchases to my weapons (staff/trident) and rebreathers (cannot be crafted to my knowledge or salvaged).  By crafting my own armor and buying weapons for karma, I'm usually sitting at level minus one with a bag full of next level gear ready to go, including jewelry.

Good point. Been having trouble staying ahead on both Artificer and Tailor. And since the Tailor mat reqs are lighter, and the Discovery skill-ups so lucrative, I may just focus on that for now.

I discovered that if I equip an axe in the main hand, a horn in the off hand of set one and only a torch in my second set off hand that a weapon switch keeps the main hand weapon and only switches the off hand weapon.  It comes in handy when I want to swap between the horn for speed buffs but want to have the torch handy for burning stuff while keeping my axe skills available for both.

Realizing that traveling to the other starter zones and questing there is a good way to avoid the content getting to far in front of you and to stock up on skill points made a big difference in the enjoyability of the game.

A big headache I've run into is lack of decent gear -- I was extremely frustrated by the human storyline quest around level 10-11 and was getting seriously smacked around trying to solo it (running into one of those restarted-until-all-my-armor-was-broken situations) -- and taking a break to find better gear, apply enhancements to existing gear, etc, helped get me past it.  Lack of functional AH (or mail!) really hurts here.

Is it possible to bring a group along for a storyline mission?

If a npc is shouting that they need help, talk to them.  They will usually send you to a DE.
Listen to npcs after an event to see if there is another in a chain.

This needs to be repeated.  Nobody I have seen in any starter zone has stuck to a DE after its completion to follow the DE chain and that is a bunch of missed content made more interesting because it follows something just completed.  As soon as a DE is finished people sprint off.

There was one DE that started out by gathering some stuff.  After all the stuff was gathered, it was given to an asura robot named Runner.  The robot was told to go deliver the items and then Runner ran off.  I followed it, nobody else did.  Runner delivered the items and that led to a DE to defend the items from bombers.  Fortunately one other person showed up after a couple bombers and we held the rest off.

No kidding. People programmed by wow. There is a lot to this game if you pay attention and look around, but hey, can't expect too much from people.

I can't believe people are struggling with levels, though I'm still pretty low (lvl 17 with my highest guy). I'm down-leveled everywhere I'm playing right now. Does this kick in later I guess?

Maybe a class or completionist thing? As an Ele, I haven't had a problem constantly gaining XP through 25 (still youngish though). I do still occasioanlly people in /map chat saying things like "I can't do my next level of storyline and have done a few DEs, but can't level up". It's not intuitive just how many things in this game give XP smiley

This drives me nuts.  It doesn't *always* happen but it happens often enough that I'm wondering what's up with people.  Not only are the DEs nice XP but watching the storylines unfold is fun.

I also think there should be a platinum participation level for situations where *nobody* but you does an event, mostly because I did a silly "herd moas into a pen" DE and nobody else in the zone could be bothered to chase the dumb birds around.  That's dedication!

You should also log out where a big boss event takes place. I've logged in twice now to a DE that drops a master chest and the loot pinata gave me mastercrafted stuff. That's always a fun way to start a session.

And don't waste your time with the svanir dome line of DE other than an initial completion/exploration; the boss doesn't drop a chest, apparently. I've done it two or three times por nada.

Yesterday I had an pretty cool experience that made me realize how much effort they've put into some of the missions.

It all started from a small village at somewhere near the mountain near the Durmand Priory. A caravan dude was asking for protection (you know, the circle icon on top of their head, doesn't show up on the map). I talk to guy, he wants me to escort the caravan to a new dig site. We start off, getting the usual ambush or two. Then we run into a collapsed bridge. This spawns an event where we need to protect the workers repairing the bridge while bandits with explosives try to blow it up. After the bridge was repaired, we cross it and arrive to the dig site. First, we must clear it from the rat people that have taken over. Once that is done, another caravan arrives and the Priory dudes setup a camp and perimeter. Then they start going inside the mine to dig for stuff.

All this started from an NPC that never shows up on map. So unless you pay attention, you can easily miss it. The whole quest was like a mini-dungeon on the world map that took around 30 minutes to complete.

Double tapping a hotkey will auto-cast the effect wherever the mouse pointer is, for ground targeted effects.

This has made my circle strafing shortbow thief's life SO MUCH EASIER. You can even tap once to call up the template and then double click to cast.

Love it. Even for spammy boss fights where I just want to plop my ae nuke on the boss, it's easier just to point and double tap than to tap then click.

There's an option setting that will quick-cast GTAOE with one tap (of course, need to pre-align your GT before tapping).

Personally, I'm struggling quite a bit with all the GTAOE abilities... I actively avoid set-ups that have them.  Still, I notice that they offer traits that make perfectly good PBAOE into GT... so I guess I'm doing it wrong.  I much prefer picking a target and having AOE effects "splash" off of that.  GTAOE has always been (for me) only useful to avoid LOS issues (DAOC), but never a mechanic that I would select.  wish there was an option to make GT either PB or Splash.

I can't imagine playing my staff ele (and my 11 ground-target AOEs) without fastcast - though I'd probably have to train myself to use doubletap for spvp tournaments, as precise placement of area effects is a must there.

GTAEs aren't that much better than mob-centered AOEs in normal pve (except for precasting on spawnpoints in zerg DEs), but they're awesome in pvp for area control/denial. I'm a slippery motherfucker in wvw... if a zerg is chasing me, I can drop down a circular AE slow field in water, an AE stun field in air, and a slowing wall in earth - and finish off by switching to fire, doing a 180 and using burning retreat for even more range. Yakety Sax optional.

It's the gathering. You kind of have to do it to keep up unless you're PVPing, and a lot of people never bothered with it in other games so they don't bother with it here.

GTAEs are soooo much more powerful than targeted on people ones in WvW.

For those that may not have noticed, holding down the ctrl key will show you all clickables and mobs at a distance.  This can speed up heart quests tremendously and help find those pesky hidden nodes.

When you run close to an NPC you will see the action icon light up, if it says greet, the NPC has nothing to say.  If it says talk a conversation is possible, sometimes it's a lore/flavor dump, sometimes it spawns a quest and occasionally it unlocks a hidden vendor.  I was able to buy some nice 30 minute regeneration boosts from an NPC I stopped to chat with in Gendaren Fields.
