Because there has to be one, and because it's the only trade-skill that generates consumables I guess.

You can still buy butter and chocolate with gold. I'm looking at a repair merchant who has them right now. Also, apparently not all karma food bits have been removed, because in the same place with this guy there's a heart merchant selling a couple other ingredients 'in bulk' for 77 karma per bag.

Only certain ingredients were removed from Karma merchants, others just had their costs bumped up.

https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/info/news/Update-Notes-September-8th-2012/first#post32760

· Increased the karma costs of all Bulk Cooking Materials.
· The following Cooking Materials are no longer sold for Karma and are now acquired through drops, gathering nodes, or loot bags: Butter, Chocolate, Vanilla, Chili Peppers, Thyme, Black Peppercorns, Cinnamon, Bay Leaves, Walnuts, and Oranges.

You have to complete hearts to buy some items in buld too.  Just found a lemon karma vendor.  Milton, the first heart north of Lion's arch.  I need to check them more often instead of just leaving, probably where most of my missing ingredients are.

Don't know if this has already been posted but be sure to complete all the zones around level 60ish, they give orange items on completion.

Once you get to Orr there are no more hearts but you still get orange items for map completion.

If you need some quick cash after level 40.  Run the level 40 dungeon CM (Caudecus's Manor). Takes about 20 minutes in story mode and gives 20k xp and 13 silver, plus what you get by killing stuff inside.  I've never had any problems finding a group. If you don't see a group outside log out/in and check the overflow.   Bring a ranged weapon for the first boss.

I had spent a little silver on crafting and once I reached 40 the 1 gold book pretty much wiped me out.  I've run CM a fair bit while waiting for friends to get online and I'm now at 6 gold and level 59 (2 gold book at level 60 /sigh).  I also stopped having to buy items off the trading post as the drops I have gotten have almost completely upgraded my gear to current levels.

Another thing I noticed the other day which made me slap my forehead.  Once you get out of the armor that salvages for copper (copper is 20-29c per ore on the TP), it's usually better to sell the items to the vendor and buy Iron off the Trading post.  Most armor items vendor for 20-80 copper.  Copper on the TP is 5 copper per when I looked yesterday. Granted it saves you time breaking it down while you're out and about, but if you can save those items until town it will increase your money flow. My guess is that this would hold true for most crafting professions excluding those using cloth.

Is Caudecus's Manor about the same difficulty as the Ascalonian Catacombs?

Waaaay easier...  First boss is the only difficult one.  Need to line of sight the rockets using the fountain. (and don't stand next to anyone).

Ascalonian Catacombs whooped on us last night, had to pretty much respec all our chars (2 ele, 2 rangers, 1 warrior) to get any sort of survivability.

Also, figured out last night that you get 10 guild influence for every char you log every 24 hours. So, for our small guild - logging in all our chars once every 24hrs got us 50 inf per account.

As a staff elementalist, I'm a combo machine. I took Radiation Field (asura) as a utility skill because clearly I didn't have enough GTAEs already.  why so serious?

Some random things:
- you can use some instant skills while you're channeling another skill or reviving someone. You can also use some skills while you're knocked down or being KB'd (some instants, and things like attunement/kit swaps).
- you can intercept enemy projectiles by standing between the attacker and the target.

I've revived quite a few people against tough ranged bosses by body-blocking them, starting the revive, switching to earth attunement and using my "reflect projectiles" skill, then switching to water to get some regen going... the revive keeps channeling through all that. It's super effective!

e: of course this is for pve. For pvp you'll want something that gives stability to ensure an uninterrupted revive or stomp.

The other big instant for elementalists is Arcane Bubble, so you can invul shield yourself during long channels after you start them if you suddenly get swarmed, like Churning Earth from offhand dagger.

I don't know if it's true for Ele's but for other classes (certainly thief) you can cast instants while waiting for a channel to finish and even move around.

Wish I had known that sooner! Knew you could move for most channels, but cast instants? That's crazy.

Yes, I said that two posts above  awesome, for real

It's similar to how you could cast stances in GW1 even while you were channeling another skill.

I wish I would have known there was a lower level area on the other side of the zone for Gendarran Fields.  You quickly run out of level appropriate tasks after you enter from Kessex Hills.

Also, Ice Elementals seem to drop a lot of Lapis Nuggets.  There's an escort quest in the Eastern part of Gendarran Fields that has you killing a ton of them.

heh funny I had the same experience last night except it was Harathi Highlands. I'm in Blazeridge which is 40-50, but there seems to be a big jump between south and north of the wall. At 45 I can handle 49 and maybe an add. But not really a 50 unless all my cooldowns are done, and certainly no add. Did a couple of DEs and then happened to hear someone in /map gripe about the jump puzzle in Harathi. So I zoom the map out and low-and-behold, a whole 35-45 zone I didn't know was there.

Now I'm lording over the place. Well, deleveled, but still, lording enough to be lordly.

I tend to play in lower level zones than i actually am, i just hit 80 and i'm dreading what's going to happen once i hit the level 80 areas!
You can get all the way to 80 without ever playing in a level-appropriate zone (except 1-15, obviously :p)

Pretty much my experience as I've been going for map completions. (done every main city/starter zone) and working on the 15-25 zones and already level 37.

Not even, you can bump a few levels just porting around getting city zone completions and even more if you go into wvwvw.

I never leave a zone without getting zone completion, except by accident (happened once that i went for dungeons while i was doing a zone, logged off somehwere else and had forgotten i was in the middle of something)

I'm currently at 76% world completion, getting some really nice rewards :)

If you take one Master, Journeyman, and Fine Salve Kits and 3 Mystic Stones (5 for 250 gems in the store.  Cost in gold isn't much.) and put them in the Mystic Forge, you'll get a Mystic Salvage kit.  The Mystic Salvage kit is of Master quality and 250 uses.

Use Master/Mystic kits on 70+ rares to get Globs of Ectoplasm which are needed for crafting Exotics.  High level Greens I sell.  High level Blues I break down with Fine kits to get extra crafting materials.  (I may switch to Master-level after I'm done leveling my skills.)

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

Nice, didn't know about that recipe so that is definitely worth it

At this point I'm just vendoring blues as the materials returned generally have been a bigger loss compared to vendoring an item and buying the mats off the TP. With a large enough sample it may show a break even (or when prices rise on the market place so the mats and rares are worth more) but until then the mats returned are not worth the cost of salvage kits + item vendor price. I am curious if magic find effects salvaging though as I don't really have any magic find and would explain my bad salvaging luckk.

Globs of ectoplasm are going for 23 silver each in EU. That thing is a goldmine at least until everyone finds out. SELL YOUR GLOBS NOW!

EDIT: Just tested. It doesn't give you a Glob of Ectoplasm every time, but it does quite often. It gives yellow sigils when it doesn't. It is still worth the price.

If it's the same as a master, it's a 80% to return upgrades (sigils, runes, jewel upgrades) and a 25% to return "rare components" eg: globs of ectoplasm.  Still a very low rate on ectos, but higher than the Blacklion Salvage kits which are 100% upgrade/10% rares.  So if you had a good sigil (say superior bloodlust) on a drop you were going to break, I'd go blacklion.  If the sigil/rune sucks (doesn't sell for more than a glob), then I break it for ecto with a master.

Found out I can buy all the harvesting stuff with karma instead of gold from a single vendor instead of running around the whole world looking for the guy that sells Orichalum Picks.  Any weaponsmith karma vendor.

There's an all-level harvesting vendor (including Orichalum) outside of every bank in each main city.  If you find an outpost on most maps that has a repair vendor and 1-2 normal merchants, one of those merchants typically has harvesting gear which is level appropriate for the zone.

Server transfers are free at the moment, and should remain so forever as it is awesome.  If you find a bugged quest, do a server transfer.  At the moment they take no longer than logging out and back in.  Also, it is a way to do things with people on other servers that actually works!

Waypoint travel in the cities is free, abuse those to get your business done faster.

I'm sure someone else has already mentioned it but you have a free hearth to lion's arch whenever you want and I somehow only figured it out yesterday.  From anywhere in the world you can bring up your character screen, pvp tab and then click go to the mists.  This is not a PvP zone really, it's sort of a lobby, completely safe.  There is no queue or anything like there is for WvW.  You just port to the mists then turn and go through the asura gate to lion's arch.

The existence of this is a good example of why the travel costs are a shitty design in this game in the first place. Pointless extra hoop to jump through to avoid paying a couple silver, woo.
