I too have a sword, and although I haven't shown it to a great number of people, those I have never showed much concern when I drew it and waved it around.  Granted, it isn't finely sharpened, but they didn't know that initially, and still showed no concern.  It's probably a sort of reaction to a weapon being 'primitive'.  I expect most people would also not worry overmuch if you 'have a bow' as opposed to a gun, even though a bow within its effective range can be quite deadly.

To a degree, that sort of reaction partly makes up for the inherent weaknesses of a sword, such as having to come into melee range to use it.  If someone isn't taking you seriously, they won't defend themselves properly and that gives an advantage (though not as big an advantage as having a gun, of course).  Besides, I doubt most people would have the slightest idea how to defend themselves from a sword, so if you happen to actually know how to attack with it...another advantage.

You can out run a sword... bullets require a little more effort.

What are you trying to tell me? That I can't dodge bullets?

It's a lot of things.  The "primitive weapon" thing along with not being exposed to them overmuch.  Also the undercurrent of knowledge that it takes skill and practice to be really dangerous with an edged weapon while even a 2 year old able to put out the trigger pressure is deadly with a gun.

People aren't scared of sticks and stones, either, but a guy with intent or who swings/ throws them wrong is going to kill you just as dead with them as with a firearm.

A bearded manchild with a sword is a lot less frightening than *anyone* with a gun.

And people aren't primed to be afraid of swords.  You wave a sword at somebody, they're going to give you a dumb look but they're probably not going to be scared.  Put a bullet in the wall behind them, you've got their undivided attention.

Are you saying this based on something that has been proven, or is it just an assumption you're making?  I would have guessed that most people would have a primal fear of anything sharp, much more naturally so than a gun.  Everyone can relate to getting cut.  Almost nobody can relate to being shot.

Not trying to troll you, was just curious if what you are stating is an actual known fact.
The only actual *fact* I have would argue the other way, statistics that say that rape is resisted less often when the rapist uses a knife rather than a gun.  So I'm pulling this out of my ass.

You generally have to be actively doing something ridiculously fucking stupid with a sword to accidentally injure someone in a way that might require stitches, whereas simple inattention with a .22 is sufficient to end someone's life immediately.  Also, the people watching you do your forms implicitly trust you not to fucking lop their hand off by virtue of the fact that you seem to exhibit some competency.

Plus, people fear being gruesomely maimed more than killed outright.

No state income tax in Texas. So the money to pay for things like Rick Perry has to come from somewhere.

Yeah, because Texas has no income tax, they have tons and tons of crazy ass taxes on everything else to make up for it.  For instance I was customizing software for a facility that, among many other things, rents out parking spaces.  Its just a normal flat monthly rent charge for the spot.  Unless you decided to park a boat in it.  Then they have to charge you tax on the rent charged for the spot.  Which of course was hard to implement because everybody else in the entire fucking country either charges tax on rent or doesn't, end of story, and the software was designed accordingly.  Shit like this comes up every time we have to do any software customization in Texas.  Their tax laws are fucked.

There are definitely ugly aspects to the house, but other aspects are really quite cool. The indoor/outdoor pool is nice (plus when the temp is right and you have the hut tub running, it rains inside the pool enclosure), there's a built-in home theater room, it has closets behind all the AV gear everywhere (an amazing and obvious idea), and there's the watchtower off the bluff. :)

Our baby shower for our oldest was held there.

Ever since Richard Garriott won his lawsuit against former employer NCsoft last year, the legal process has been grinding on ever since to hash out the details. Today we've learned that the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reaffirmed the win of almost $32 million in favor of Garriott.

Time to kick off some new construction.
