Massively early days yet but a press release from Legendary Pictures has revealed that they're presenting some info about an adaptation of Mass Effect at this years Comic Con. Mark Protosevich is currently on board as writer. EDIT: Link to full press release. Also mentions Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim" - the film he's doing that's not Mountains of Madness.

But you don't know if they'll let the council live or who Shephard will hook up with!

Yeah, that's kind of a problem. On the bright side, they'll probably throw out most of the game characterization so perhaps a male Shepard might not suck. OTOH, they might be running the numbers and decide which one is more popularly played.... Yeah, I'm not feeling this. Unless they get whats-his-face to actually PLAY Joker. Then I'm in.

I'd bet good money (well, $5) that it won't be FemShep. Big budget films still won't go for a female lead and all that hoo-hah a few years ago about a WB exec saying that he'd never greenlight a film without a male lead again is always going to be the attitude.
Which is a shame for the obvious reasons.

Angeline Jolie could probably make it work (Salt made $300 million world wide).

Depends on the treatment. The directory, the story, the special effects budget -- Angelina Jolie could handle a hard-bitten femShep in a sarcastic, but otherwise serious, blow-em-up with Aliens flick. Just throw in some sexual tension with Liara in lieu of any romance, and you've got a decent enough "Blow shit up" concept. Sadly, it'll come out like Gamer and suck so bad....

The problem is that other than Sigourney Weaver and maybe Angelina Jolie I can't even think of another female actress that could fit a FemShep role. If it were cast for a at least semi-accurate portrayal and not just for the eye candy.

Good point well made. The article I was thinking of is nearly 4 years old. (tl;dr - Jode Foster's Brave One made no money nor did Nicole Kidman in The Invasion therefore women leads don't sell. Entirely wrong thinking that Jeff Robinov subsequently and inevitably denied.) But in terms of dream casting for a FemShep, I think I'd have to go for Lena Headey - her what was Gorgo in 300 and Sarah Connor in SC Chronicles on telly. Gorgeous and kick-ass.

My FemShep is a redhead so she would need to be played by...Lindsay Lohan Actually Rachel Nichols in her redhead Scarlett look would work for me

Charlize Theron, about 25% of the way down her 'transformation' for Monster.

Thinking about it I wonder if the ME movie would have anything to do with Shepherd at all. Maybe it's just set in the ME universe prior to ME1.

Right now, I'm just going to assume to assume this movie gets stuck in development Hell, just like Bioshock, Uncharted, Halo, Gears of War, etc... Movies based on games tend to be such a poor investment, I don't see an ME movie getting a decent budget

Further proof that Italians have suspect taste in games.
|
Agreed: fact is, I think the franchise would have good potential for a full-fledged space opera. All the ingredients are there: the writers of the game explained in detail each race and the world in general from various points of view, and other authors could add more as it fits.
Of course there is also the "been there, done that" factor (with a new spin, yes, but Qarian Fleet - Battlestar Galactica storyline, for example), but IMO it's mostly about the project falling in good hands and with a real, serious budget, and not your typical videogame adaptation one.

The narrative of ME isn't particularly good. You're a highly trained military person given special powers who chases a rogue agent that fronts a bigger evil that no-one else but you believes in. It's space opera++ with a dash of cop drama thrown in. Add to that players would want to see all their favourite team mates given equal screen time so that each relationship can be shown and you are heading for a movie that is more "Wing Commander" than ... I can't think of a good video game movie. Do they exist?
Plus if you are thinking of FemSheps it is more likely that the role would be played by Megan Fox than Angelina Jolie.

I heard Tomb Raider was good. Resident Evil series has done pretty well, and Prince of Persia beat both of those at the box office. I didn't hate PoP when I saw it.. but cheesy video game mechanics are also cheesy in movies.

They'll make the same major mistake almost all video game movies make. They'll take elements from the game and "improve" on the story and screw up characterizations. Tali will be a robot. Garrus will be an evil assassin. Wrex will be pure comic relief. Ashley will be a damsel in distress who Shepard briefly meets. He'll go rogue and steal the Normandy with the help of his sidekick Joker played by Rob Schneider. Along for the ride will be Liara, a green alien hooker with mysterious powers and knowledge that could save the galaxy...

I kinda assumed it wouldn't be about Shepard, because most of the people who would go see a Mass Effect movie already have "their" Shepard. Could be based on one of the ME books, maybe, or the First Contact War like Fordel said, and work pretty well, probably. Well, as well as these things go.

Were it me, I'd set it post ME3. Keep Shep in the background, referenced perhaps but not seen. Or just set it a few decades after. Trying to retell or change the game's story will just muck it all up and lead to a crappy movie. Better to extend the brand and setting outwards.

But how could you deal withthe fact that any woman/man who spends any time at all around Shep is effected by his "massive amouts of hormones" power? Face it guys. The only actor that could play Shep properly would be David Hasselhoff.

Not that this is a bold prediction regarding a video game movie, but development hell or flop ahoy. These things get into development because they're "huge properties" and then someone behind the scenes looks up the numbers and realizes that Halo 2 only sold like 8 million units worldwide, compared to the 10 or 12 million tickets the movie would be expected to sell, in one weekend, in the United States alone. Then they mysteriously end up in development hell.

Well they just need to charge $60 per movie ticket then.

As I said, call it "Fifth Element 2" and hand it over to the same people. Who is going to notice? I mean, the Diva was practically an Asari Matriach, Bruce Willis was a retired Sheppard, and replace Ruby Rod with Wrex and you're good. :)
