Short : Fall From Heaven 2 with Total War combat.

Long :
Went under the radar, picked up during steam sale. Got horribly destroyed for a few plays, then realized how to use magic and units properly. 94 hours played so far.
Similarity with FFH2 ?
Heroes units.
Religion affecting unit choices and bonuses (Old Faith vs Christianity),
Quests with Choose-Your-Own-Adventure format.
Game decisions that could affect how the campaign progress.

I like it. I want more of this.

Verdict: Get it.

Tip: Build archers. Mow down the world.

Win.

Archers are overpowered, but the game can be hellishly difficult. Your armies are rated in strength compared to the strongest army existing in the game world and you can easily be stuck with full armies rated 35-50% and no ability to recruit stronger troops while 100% armies spawn in response to quests or the main game plot.

Old Faith mid game ability is game-breaking though. Who needs archers when you can insta-port to enemy faces? I really enjoyed the knight abilities experiment and artifact combos. I'm gonna look at NeoCore other offerings after I'm done with King Arthur, at the moment dominating the game with super Sidhe Infantry.

I'll revise.

Early Game: Build archers, put holes in people, win.
Mid-Game: Take Old Faith, mix with archers and serve on ice in a Collins glass. Win.
Late-Game: Use lvled heroes in front of archers, destroy all who opposed you with god-like efficiency. Win.

Agreed that if you go Old Faith and have a number of heroes who can teleport around, archers become pointless.

I didn't like this game much. As I said somewhere in the steam thread/forum, I think you have to be a big king arthur fan to enjoy this game. The actual mechanics are ripe for abuse, and, while the game is pretty, it's simply boring if you aren't bonkers about the lore.
