Am I the only one who thinks that an engine supplier directly competing with its own customers by releasing similar games is a bit suspect? Also probably not the wisest business decision?

Games press is largely handling it as if it's not a big deal and as if Bluehole and Player Unknown are babies for complaining about other people eating their lunch. Well they are being whiny bitches about their competition but being a whiny bitch doesn't necessarily mean you're wrong. I wondered why EA is pushing Frostbite so hard and while having their own engine makes a lot of financial sense for a publisher that is as big as EA, they're also no longer feeding info and company internals to the competition.

Why would I be willing to work with Epic and use their Unreal engine when that cooperation poses the risk of directly feeding valuable improvements, business internals and design knowledge to a potential competitor? Worse even paying them license fees for the engine that they then can use to release the competing product as free to play.

Yes Epic is now probably making all of the money with Fortnite so they got lucky this time but suppose the Fortnite battle royale mode hadn't been the success it was, why jeopardize your own business model and potentially drive away customers?

You're literally the only one. See, everyone else remembers Source and how all the best Source games came from Valve.

Also both engines are free as in beer. So.

It'll probably just be some VR horseshit. Not exactly what I needed in my walking simulators.

Wild West Online, the latest shit game cash grab from Sergey Titov (even thought they deny he's involved), the same man that brought you WarZ/Aftermath/Infestation and the legend that is Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing, is now available on Steam.  Having only been in development for about a year, I wouldn't be too optimistic about it, esp. with a $30 price tag. awesome, for real

Well, if you ever wanted to go to Austria but couldn't afford it, you can now do so via VR horseshit.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/779810/VR_Austria/

Edit: Or maybe not.  Says it was released 03 Apr. 2018 but I don't see a way to access the game.

Wargaming shut down the Seattle office today apparently. 150 layoffs. Which is odd, because I just applied last week for a product position there. I suppose that's not happening now.

Were they ones that made Hybrid Wars and the updated Master of Orion?  Neither of those did very well and could explain why they're shutting down.  It use to be Gas Powered Games, which made the Dungeon Siege series as well as Supreme Commander and Demigod.

Dauntless, the Monster Hunter like game, is now in open beta and free to play.  I think this might have done a lot better if it had released a year earlier before Monster Hunter World was available.  I don't like it's chances now that it has to compete with the franchise it's mimicking, esp. with the PC release a few months off.

Wargaming is the studio that builds the World of ____ games.

It looks like they acquired Gas Powered Games and turned them into the Seattle studio.

I know they made World of Tanks/Warships/Warplanes but they also made a few other games, too.  Hybrid Wars and Master of Orion were two of them.

Detroit: Become Human, the new movie/game by David Cage is out today. I like his games so I was pretty excited about this and and preordered it. I played only two hours so far and I like it, the first scene in particular is pretty good. The second and third though, where you play maid, could should have been more streamlined somehow. It actually felt like some kind of trolling: "Oh you think my games are slow (PRESS X TO JASON) and on rails? Here, just fucking clean my house you idiots." Unngh.

It is very reminiscent of the TV show Humans, but set in Detroit instead of the UK. It looks like you control three different characters, but two out of three starts out as house cleaners. Unnngh.

EDIT: I gotta say, the best part so far is the amount of choices and possible outcomes for every scene. At the end of every scene you can see a diagram with all the possible branches and the path you took and the ones you haven't discovered or tried yet. For what is basically a choose-your-adventure game, or a souped-up Telltale game, there seem to be a lot of things to see and a great amount of rplayability.

That is  incomprehensible to me. I’ve played all of his games except Detroit and I hate all of them, mostly because of how incompetent Cage is about writing and storytelling and how exploitative all of his games are. Exploitative as in only using story beats to effect emotions while not giving a single fuck about the underlying topic or whether or not the story is even coherent or makes sense. Also exploitative in how he treats his protagonists if they are not cis white dudes. (case in point Indigo Prophecy and it’s Melange of sexism, racism and cultural stereotyping and an incoherent story’s that makes absolutely no sense)

The near-rape dream sequence at the beginning of Heavy Rain is a prime example of everything I think is wrong with David Cage‘s writing because it covers all of the above criticisms. Story beat played only for emotional impact, no connection to any of the story, does not give a single fuck about the topic and exploitative.

Also the plot twist in Heavy Rain is so stupid and mind boggling that it could belong to the Trump administration.

I’m seriously and sincerely interested in what you like about those games.

Honestly Jeff, you might be right. When it comes to storytelling in videogames I have such low expectations that I can swallow things that would not fly in cinema. Again, you could be right. You probably are. I just enjoy to "play" a movie. Even a mediocre one.n Also, always loved "choose-your-adventure" books, and I remember playing lots of those shitty books just because of the gimmick even though they were literary crap.

Im sorry I know i came off quite hostile but I’m really interested.

I played Heavy Rain first and I liked it a lot - well up to a point - because I’m a sucker for stories and I love choose your own adventure style things. I’m also a sucker for Neo Noir and crime/mystery thrillers.

Cage completely lost me with the weird mid game plot twist though that completely shattered my suspension of disbelief and any sort of emotional investment I had in the story. Which is by and large at least competent. Even the motive of the Origami Killer is believable. It’s not high literature but for someone like me who can bear a lot of pulp it’s not that bad. I read RPG novelizations for fun for Pete’s sake,

You can‘t have me play the killer throughout the game investigating his own crimes though. The scene in the watchmaker’s shop is just WTF bad. I control the killer, I talk to the watchmaker, I investigate and then I leave, I control the character at every point throughout the scene and then the game not only reveals that he is the killer but also that he must have killed the watchmaker while I was controlling the character. Probably while I wasn’t looking. There are a million ways that could have made this reveal better even if you keep the plot twist and the fact that the killer is controlled and he chose probably the most inane one.

I always return to his games like the sucker I am because I like the idea of what he wants to accomplish with his games and I always leave disappointed because the stories are just terribad.

I always wonder if his games would be better if he just kept to French and just wrote everything in his native language and then spent the money on a competent localization instead.

Not sure if this is useless or not, but Steam has decided to go completely 'hands off' responsibility for games on its own platform: https://steamed.kotaku.com/valve-says-it-will-now-allow-everything-on-steam-unles-1826612274

Because this worked so well for Twitter and Facebook. I'm scratching my head here, curation is expensive, I know it costs money to have people watch things. This just won't help though - it's going to make the problem of shit games mucking up their platform so much worse.

Not exactly a fan, but not really surprised, either.  It's one of those trends that's hard to reverse.  It's a lot easier to loosen the restrictions and allow more stuff in, than it is to tighten them and try to figure out how to deal fairly with the ocean of crap that was let in yesterday when the restrictions were looser.

I mean, at this point, the damage is basically already done.  Nobody is going to be shocked to find a crap game on Steam, and their policy towards stuff like nudity and sex has been awkward and inconsistent.  Like, Steam says you can't have sex.  Well, you can, since you can like, fade to black while people moan suggestively or something, but you can't show any actual nudity.  Well, you can, but it has to be like, naked boobs in a Conan game, you can't have straight up porn.  Well, you can, but it can only be pictures of naked anime girls, you can't show actual sex or anything.  Well, you can, but it has to be censored, you can't just show people fucking.  Well, you can, as long as you have to "hack" the game to do it (and by "hack" I mean those l337 h4xorz edited their config.txt file to set "censorship=false" or something equally pointless).  I mean, WTF are they even pretending to curate at this point, the entire storefront has been covered with lame anime VNs whose only selling point is the "nudity" tag for the last year at least.

Man, I remember when people were getting pissy about how much Train Simulator DLC was on the front page.  If we had only known...

Steam going Twitter Nazi playground in addition to all the shitty shovelware, asset copy pasta and utter shit games that infest the platform? I'm shocked that they would put profits over the development of great games like Half Life 3.

Cultist Simulator is finally out and very "original" for lack of a better word. It is actually hard to play since part of its originality doesn't work well with the absence of a tutorial, but it can be quite addictive and it can trigger the "just one more turn" syndrome before you have even understood how to play.

There's already a glut of crappy nonsense games on Steam.  It's become cumbersome and impossible to navigate if you're just trying to browse.  When I browse on Steam there is so much garbage that I generally give up before I find anything.  While I don't condone censorship, I am in favour of having standards.  If the game is complete and utter crap and poorly made, then, by all means, say no. The author can always fix it up to meet their quality standards.  Sexual content, violence or point of view isn't a good enough reason to reject a game.  If your stupid school shooting game is made well and not obvious trolling, well then fine... although you're still an asshole for making it and it probably really is trolling.  People can make up their own minds once it passes a quality check.  If Steam becomes a trashy site where anyone can submit anything and have it uploaded, then I'm really sorry I bought so many games from them and I'll buy my games someplace else.  I used to really like Steam but it is becoming rather bloated.  :(

I don't even know what the solution for the Steam problem will even be.

I mostly go off of recommendations from friends (or you assholes) for games these days anyway.

I don't know that I would have found Factorio any other way than reading about it here.

I may review Steam Curators to see if any of them are worth a damn, but of course that has the likely problem of them becoming yet another failure point.

This is all pretty bizarre to me. I never see all the trash on Steam, because browsing Steam is not how I select games. Of course there is trash in there. I have no intention of looking at it.

When I'm looking at my Steam library right now, I see a bunch of quality games that I've either enjoyed playing or hope to find time to play in the future.

Valve is boning themselves by not pushing to have Steam friends integrated into more games. I think the best I remember was Sleeping Dogs (where is the sequel for THAT!?), where you would see achievements ingame compared to Steam friends (I roundhouse kicked more dudes than Mr Noisy!).

State of Decay 2 looks really great for co-op (up to 4 player) but I have zero f13 friends on xbox or wherever the friends list is populated. I guess I should fix that.

Anyway, I mostly buy Rocksmith DLC on Steam. Most stuff I get on GMG and redeem on Steam (or ubi or winstore or wherever now that everyone has their own platform).

Well, yeah, now that's how I do it too, but the more niche your tastes are the worse that works.  As someone who likes weird indie games that nobody else apparently likes, it's getting harder and harder to find anything worth taking a chance on.

I think I remember Shadow of Mordor having some of this.  Some feature where people on your friends list would get killed by enemies and the enemy who killed them would show up in your game, and you'd have a chance to avenge them, that kind of thing.  Don't know if the sequel does anything like that.

The sequel expanded it to public, not just friends and was ultimately less effective. If one of you fine folks was killed by an orc I would likely hunt it down. However, I never quite felt compelled to hunt down the killer of xXxBonerSmasher69xXx.
