If you craft a bed you can reset your spawn point.

http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Bed

Just remember that if you move your bed without sleeping in it, your spawn point goes back to original spawn.

I keep forgetting to sleep in my bed when I rearrange my furniture.  On the plus side, I'm getting better at finding my place from spawn.

I'm finding the map mod invaluable. I just died before I could get food and before I could fix the bed, and had to walk to -150 and -1500. Derp.

I don't think I like that food maintenance cost thing.  How fast does it run out?
The Food thing is fine mostly because food stacks now. So I can use 1 slot of inventory for 64 zombiechops.
Yeah, it doesn't bother me and I usually hate this stuff. Once I get down 4-5 food I pop a steak and I'm good for awhile.

Honestly the new food/health changes have made the game a lot easier. The passive regen means you never get low just from attrition; with stacking food, increased droprates, and more mobs that can potentially drop food I rarely found myself at risk just running around and night slaughtering things (in only iron gear).

In other news, I played around a bit with mcedit to copy my favorite structures from my old world into a new 1.8 world, rather than have to run to the edge of my explored-but-unused space in my old world. At first I thought it went pretty well, but when I got back to my old tower the whole section I copied was surrounded by empty space (all the way to the bottom) that I hadn't noticed in mcedit. Filling that all in took a while...

Also, what's up with the dark black fog down near bedrock now? I've got torches everywhere and it's still very very dark. ACK! I didn't notice any mobs spawning in my torchlit-but-still-pitch-black areas, but I didn't stay long.

Still struggling a bit with combat. I'm actually pretty good with using melee against creepers, pushing them back off a ledge ftw. But those damned skeletons, the arrows hurt and if you attract two (zomg 3 - last time I died) you're in for it. So I made my first attempt to spelunk into a cave, trying to light it a bit as I go and three damn skellies jump me, I die. As I was working my way back in, I got about three blocks above, dealt with a creeper and when I dropped down to my scattered gear...it was gone (in the 20secs I dealt with Mr Creep). Dammit. My first full suit of iron, a couple iron swords, luckily not too much else.

Arrows are like platinum in my world, I've got maybe 12.

I am really enjoying this new update. Only thing I dislike is the XP orbs that can bring down a server when someone dies with a lot of them. I enjoy the new food system a lot, with the changes in the spawn system ( That I have not quite figured out yet, but its different ) its been rather challenging on our server, depending on the biome you settle in. The terrain is much more interesting, and I love the swamp areas. We also toured our first Stronghold ( that was intersected by a abandoned mine ) last night. Thought it was devoid of mobs, I can see some really cool dungeon crawling going on in them.

Not yet. And there is no limit to how many you can collect. So when you die, you can possibly release thousands at once, bogging down if not crashing the server.

Kill yourself in a pit of lava regularly.

Later, it's supposed to be a short leveling system where you gain skills. You drop XP on death.

1.8.2 is going to fix the xp orb thing, but in the meantime you could always try not dying.

Not really. The server op has to disable it. Spawn protection is annoying as fuck, especially if you stumble on a mine or cave system that runs under 0,0. Have a bunch of diamonds on my server that I can't get because of it and it drives me mad.

Also, if anyone finds melon seeds? FARM THAT SHIT. Melons are the most efficient food in the game, bar none. And you don't even need a lot of seeds to do it, since you never have to replant melon stems once they're grown.

From the MC forums:

"In your server.properties file:

spawn-protection=0"

Edit: Here's the thread I found it in. I don't run a server, so I dunno how accurate it is now: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/119770-spawn-protection/

I fucking love this update.

I created a new world, went down into what I think was a mineshaft, and a bit later found what was the most awe-inspiring thing I've seen in a computer game, really. It was a thin, jagged fissure deep in the earth that was about 400 blocks high from top to bottom with waterfalls spilling down at several points from the unseeable roof far above. I felt like a vandal when I actually put torches down--it almost felt like I should keep it secret and dark, barely illuminated by lava somewhere. The fissure went on and on for a huge distance.

The whole game is a hard kick-in-the-nuts to MMOG designers who said you couldn't do dynamic content and have it come out coherent or interesting. Some of the visuals of a good Minecraft world are, blocks and all, rivalrous to the most beautiful hand-crafted shit I've seen in many other games.

Also, it will be interesting to see how the artifact mod (http://theartifactmod.tumblr.com/) grows as 2.0 launches.  I hope it actually comes to fruition.  Should make for a helluva ride.

Actually, one thing I just remembered while I was in this thread, there are whole patches of the world where I sometimes see through to the caves below. Anyone else have this?

I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong with my PC or if it's just EU3 also being buggy, because I'm having invisible flags in europa universalis 3.

No, it does that on occasion, especially in multiplayer when the server doesn't get you the terrain data fast enough.   Minecraft problem, not you.    Well, I guess technically it could be a symptom of some horrible hard disk problem or something if it is happening in single-player.   But basically whenever Minecraft can't get the terrain generated fast enough, it just shows up as a big hole, and this happens a fair amount, especially on new maps.

You can usually fix it by plopping a torch down near the missing chunk (you can pick the torch back up, it's just trying to change the terrain there and update it).  But sometimes you have to just log off and back on again, or just go around.

As consolation, you do get to sort of cheat when it happens and see what's underground over there.

This is in the beginning of this area. It went on and on and on and in parts the floor and the ceiling of the canyon were even further apart. About five or six different springs pouring out above and in the floor of the area.

Yeah there's some horrible Moria-esque cavern under the NPC town I'm living in on our survival server. I broke in at y=13 or so, stared around dumbfounded for a bit at the lava lakes and waterfalls and natural obsidian deposits the combination caused, and then creepers started raining down on me from the dark depths above. Sealed that up right quick, not going back without a couple people to help.  ACK!

Yeah, the area of the map I'm in on my MP server is Ravine Country. Four large ravines within 50 tiles of 0,0 with about nine more overland ones that we've found so far just within a 500 tile radius of spawn. The fourth ravine near 0,0 we actually found while leveling a hill that was allowing creepers and skeletons to get over the large wall we had erected to keep said shit out of our little settlement. The ravine was at sea level like most others, but happened to be under a huge range of hills.

Actually, I can walk over it just fine, except I keep bumping into trees etc. It's all stored on a brand new SSD, so I kind of assume that's not the problem. I'm moving the users directory to the platter disk soon though, I'm getting tired of the stuttering when minecraft is generating new blocks, which I've been told by a cousin of mine was one of the major changes he saw when moving his machine over to SSD (he got one of the older SSDs a year or so back, before they fixed most of the performance issues).

So I pushed out to the edge of the map on my friend's server, finding an ocean biome. As I'm sailing across, I notice some light down at the bottom (oceans are deep!)  ... I swim down to find an abandoned mine - a huge sprawling one - just below the ocean floor. I've now spent an untold amount of time exploring it and reclaiming the flooded sections. Too much fun.
