Hey, I've heard this game is enjoyable and I'm thinking of getting it.
This.
Somehow, oddly, I keep running out of memory. Its quite frustrating. I ended up bumping my view distance down one step and have not crashed up since. Still... Out of memory, how does that even happen?
And then this.

Well, actually went home for lunch and the minecraft site was down. Finished lunch and had about 15 minutes, so I set up the first world and crashed ala BW after punching down my second tree. Bumping down the view worked, but I want me some mega draw distance! I had watched the 'how to make a torch and wall yourself in for the night' video before hitting the road for lunch, so I was looking for coal or whatever to make a torch.

I'm on the coast with nothing but trees around, surrounded by ocean and desert. Try tunneling into the one small hill, nada. No high ground to look for a mountain/rocky area, lots of trees anyway (moer view distance!). So I decided to truck off inland, and night falls with me and a wooden pick. I decide to just keep on truckin, the hell with it. Some crazy black spectre thing pops up, so I charge it and swing my pick...he disappears. Another comes along and does the same thing. So I keep on truckin and BLAM they're chasing me with blocks or something. I'm able to barely kill them with my cheap pick, so I throw down a quick workbench and make a stone sword/pick/shovel combo. Notice zombies or something in the distance, decide to sit tight on a small hillock with decent view for the rest of the night, king of the hill style.

Thus ends play session one (not yet dawn, but 5 minutes late for work...).

Apparently increasing the heap seems to help ( as does the lowering the draw distance by one step ).

I have a feeling this is why they do not ( officially )support textures above 16 x 16.

There was a fix for the memory leak thing, apparently it was developed for the linux client by community, and reported to Notch many times. I'll have to look around for it, came across it about a week ago.

Sky: you don't have to have coal. Build a furnace, and burn some log (not boards) with some log or boards as the fuel source and it will make charcoal, which you can use instead of coal for torches.

Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Also, increasing the heap? Where is that setting? (thanks!)

Ingmar, thanks. If I survive the night I'll learn how to build a forge. I didn't want to wiki beyond the first night thing until I have played around for a while and learn on the ground, as I did with Terraria. Then once I thoroughly mess up my newb world, I'll start to nag you guys about your servers and whatnot.

Allegedly if you are running 32-bit Java on a 64-bit OS it eventually crashes the game.  Plus, if you automatically download Java and are using a 32-bit browser, it defaults to downloading 32-bit Java, so you have to go the website and manually get it like a peon.

This is all random internet minecraft forum hearsay, but might be worth a look if you are having crashing problems.   I'm all 64-bit and haven't, so I have nothing other than these rumors.

A simple little thing that new players often don't think of: When it gets dark, just jump straight up and place a block below you. Keep repeating until you are high enough to be out of bow range. In the morning, dig straight down.

More advanced - build a little elevated platform at night. As long as its small you are fine, as nothing will spawn within 20 blocks of you, torch or not. Secret to platform building (and absolutely required for building most anything) - hold down shift - it allows you to lean over edges to put blocks on the sides of blocks. Just don't let go of the shift button.

It's just a java app, there's an everything build I believe.

And if you use texture packs above 32x32, 64 bit java is a must, and changing the heap size.

Well, it being a java app is why I went looking in the first place. As far as it working on OSX...it's my first day, give me a break.

And we use OSX at work, which helps me not game there. Helped.

I believe spiral knights is also just a java app, if you still had any time you planned on working left.

I've been playing Minecraft for a long time now and started a new world the other night. This is one of the most interesting worlds I've seen it create. It's an island map, very sparse land, and almost no trees. Thought I'd share it for those interesting in something a little different.

So what's the deal with food now?  If I don't eat, will I end up starving?

SKY, Y U NO PLAY ON F13 SERVER?
lernin2play

Started a cool little hideout, BLAM creeper. Didn't realize they persist into daylight, front door (ok, dirt plug to my cave) was loaded with em. I had found a little village with crops, forge, mine pit and a cool tower, but decided to go back to roughing it in my cave (not reading the psychology of that, thanks). It kind of felt like cheating to have a whole village already. Then when the creepers got me, I forgot where my cave and village was.

So I started out to where I thought it may have been, drawing an arrow in the ground this time. Found another village with a lot of resources nearby and a cool waterfall grotto. Started a new cave in the grotto and oh hai there creepers BLAM.

So...hey, how about I start a little bolthole at the spawn location where I can stash some torches, tools, and whatnot?  why so serious?

Alive and well thanks, been lurking a lot. :)

If your food runs out you start to take damage until you are at a half heart. You won't die, but until you eat you'll stay at a half heart. Found that out in that island map I just posted as there were no animals on the islands either. Finally remembered that I could fish.

It depends on what you're doing.  Standing around uses none, sprinting uses a lot, etc.   Also if your bar is full it seems to take a long time to drop to 9, so always filling it up when you drop to 7 or so seems to be most efficient.

I like it, it makes extended expeditions much more manageable.  Grab a stack of steaks and you can regenerate your way through a lot of cave exploration.

Led to a moment of panic as my health is dropping and I'm manically looking about for a pig to slaughter...didn't realize it stopped at 1/2 heart...

But now I've got a nice little stock of chops and steaks to keep me going through my first tower construction.

Very cool.  The lack of trees makes getting bootstrapped a bit of a pain in the butt.  I hiked and swam for a while until I found an island with ONE tree, which yielded 6 logs and one sapling.

Does stock minecraft have a way to change your spawnpoint?  Hiking a long way out and dying suuuucks.

Yea I've been avoiding traveling too far as I assume eventually I'd hit an area with a lot of trees. I like playing it in this sort of hardcore mode.

If you craft a bed you can reset your spawn point.

I wish there was a better way to integrate maps in the game, maybe to link them together or notate on them.  I explore a bit and they're just not efficient enough.

The Food thing is fine mostly because food stacks now. So I can use 1 slot of inventory for 64 zombiechops.
