People like to create things, and people like to show other people what they create.  It's not difficult to understand.

Seriously, they just need to add blocks with the alphabet, numbers, rudimentary math symbols and you guys would be playing a game designed for high schools to rehabilitate the mentally handicapped. No insult intended but somebody's got to call you guys out on this before you start showing up to Minecraft conventions in cosplay outfits made from various spray painted cardboard boxes because that's exactly where this is going.

Have you played it?

Personally, I like the potential as a roguelike survival game once he works out some kinks in it all.

I didn't get too into group building aspect, but last time I tried it, it was still very much in its infancy.

Oh man, I bought my friend a Creeper shirt for Christmas .... the slippery slope! Someone rehabilitate me before it's too late! Get me an unoriginal FPS or a boring-ass DIKU grind, stat!

Actually I agree with you there. If they added some other type of game play... maybe a PVP FPS? or even like you say a rouge like game, where people design dungeons and such and then you have to work your way through. Then I'd not be so critical.

There already IS PvP, and to an extent dungeons.

Have to say, the last update, performance and graphical issues in the distance aside. Really good. Glad he removed the tool repair exploit and such. I do have to say, little uncanny that this client has some of the same problems that we have been weeding out in wurm.  awesome, for real

I think diamonds are just too rare to be needing 3 of em every 1084 blocks you want to mine.

We had about 30 just sitting around though. This apply to other objects too. Currently I am enjoying that materials get consumed.

There aren't enough, adjust the hits if you want them to be important. The fact we consume them at the rate we do should be enough reason.

Wood and Gold tools have 33 uses, Stone, 65 uses, Iron, 129 uses, and the best, Diamond, a full 1025 uses.

Good job on stating the obvious.  The point is it's not enough.  I, personally, work on mega structures.  The work I've done alone would have consumed hundreds of diamond picks.  The work I have left to do in the thousands.

Finding diamonds is interesting the first time. When your diamond pick-ax breaks and you have to find more diamond using an five iron ones, it becomes annoying and time-consuming.

Introduce sharpening stones so the durability can be reset (and don't destroy tools better than stone when worn out.) Sandstones could be a semi-rare drop from sand and a common one from clay. The point is that it shouldn't take the number of uses a tool has to replace that tool. As is you can dig for diamond for hours without finding it.

In my much neglected single player I keep one iron tool for gold, diamond and redstone only and I finally found some diamond to make one which I will use for obsidian only.  I churn through the stone tools constantly for everything else and its a tedious chore constantly making new ones that break every minute or so.  Durability needs to be bumped up for all tool levels, its crazily stupid how fast you go through even a diamond tool.

I hope there is a mod we can install on the server that will get rid of durability.

Got a question if anyone by chance has an answer or a place to point me at.. setup a server for my three kids to play around on with Minecraft.  Running it currently with the all the normal settings, but have the PvP turned off.  When more than two of us are on the server it starts to get flaky.  Is that due to the amount of people connected or is it just unstable still with the monsters turned on?

Thanks!!!

No mods, well, our oldest has his avatar set to look like Master Chief.

Flaky as in blocks going poof and instantly reappearing.  Mobs in a jumping loop.  Basically seems to be timing issues.  I noticed the server was using around 48k of ram and was listing at 50% ish utilization.  I have 9GB, so pretty sure that the ram allocation is hard coded.  I am running it on a Windows 7 box (and playing from that same unit).

Thanks for the responces!

Those two bugs sound like old ones, though I haven't played SMP in a long time, so they may still be issues. None the less, those are bugs in the server, not something you're doing.

And yes, that usage is hard coded.

I'm debating giving this a try after watching the YOGScast videos.  It looks like a free-form crafting/building sim with some fun survival elements.  Do you recommend running my own server or would any of you be willing to let me join a world already in progress?

If I knew of a good survival multiplayer place I'd probably be interested, I've been mostly playing single player (though I did take a tour of the UTTERLY RIDICULOUS constructions on the f13 peaceful server today.)

I tried out stock rules SMP tonight with two friends on a fresh server install and it was quite a bit of fun.  We got lucky and hit some coal straight off, dug a little stronghold into the side of a mountain the first day and then continued to expand down and up as time and resources permitted.  Somebody would often go chop trees and kill animals (mmm delicious porkchops) during the day.  Voice chat (mumble) was handy to coordinate things.

If you just want to practice messing around I'd try the single player out first.  Multiplayer is neat but the bugs are annoying (especially lag-related issues, at least last time I played) and you have to be mindful of other people's stuff and what things will mess with performance and that sort of thing.

I haven't logged in for a while, but I remember hearing recently that minecarts still don't work quite right.  Did they at least fix the thing with blocks rubberbanding back into existence right after you harvest them, though?  That was really the big thing for me.
