* Falling sand behaves better in SMP
Sorry I assumed others had read the update notes in your post. I meant that falling sand behaving better is very likely to cause me to be unable to explore the cavern I was in at best, buried alive at worst.

Well, see, the behavior was always working. I dont think that changes, however the movement animations have been changing. I'm not 100% sure what hes referring to in that line. Hes always a bit vague.

Fordel and I had a horrible sand cave collapse incident last night, perhaps the cascading wasn't working before?

Yes, it was a cave-in that I was thinking about when I saw the falling sand fix. I happened to find a cave with a ceiling made of sand, and it didn't fall on me as long as I didn't mine it.

I don't think that was the bug that was fixed. There was an issue where when mining sand and gravel the blocks above would get glitched and start "continuously falling" they'd look like they were jittering back and forth. I'm actually having fun with this game now. The normal game play I don't enjoy much but my nephew wanted me to host a server so I did. I got some friends from eve that came over and try to lay traps all over and, in general kill each other. I've been using mods to try to make decent dungeons but I can't seem to place monster spawners that work so it's rather difficult. We had one (I guess we could call it) PVP battle that ended up with the sun going down and people hiding in a huge grove of trees... then someone ran out of torches so he set fire to a tree for light... in about 2min the entire forest was on fire... there were zombies and skeletons on fire... someone stumbled into a long forgoten minefield someone else had lain... When I logged in the next day the entire spawn area was a cratered burning moonscape (some of the tree's never went out.) It eventually got so glitchy I had to restart the map. But now minecraft.net's been down all week I think I've lost all my players so I guess we're done with it. Least I got my $15 out of it.

First review I've seen of him (at least in a long while) where he isn't negative. I liked the review, I felt it was pretty much spot on. He even had the obligatory cock'n'balls.

Yahtzee when he talks about what he likes is often far more interesting than when he talks about what he hates. He has an interesting supplementary piece this week where he talks about how he almost sort of kind of occasionally has a taste for Peter Molyneux despite thinking he's a fucking disaster area.

Attempted to buy it and after three levels of authentication (minecraft account, visa details, secured by visa details) I think it died. So now I have a Heisenberg purchase...

It's pretty addictive even at this stage.
Are there any commands a player can use to find location? Having started work on my mine (after wandering randomly until I couldn't see any construction) I'm terrified of getting lost and losing it. Likewise having the location of the spawn point so I can go sightseeing.

"Daddy, how do I get diamonds?"
I have been playing Minecraft since June of last year. I play fairly casually, with spurts of near-catass behavior every few weeks. I'm nowhere near tapping into the raw creativity the game offers or even close to accomplishing things I've seen on Youtube. I have fun, though, and that is 51% of what I want out of a game. It's perfect for a busy dad schedule: Passive and pausable.
My daughter is five, almost six years old. She's a pretty smart kid, though I imagine most parents would say the same of their offspring. She has watched me play Minecraft off and on through the last six months, asking to play often. I've let her play Free Realms and Wizard 101 with chat disabled for a year or so, though I can tell she's not really into the treadmill games much. I think partially due to the reading block; she's not quite reading well enough to tackle complex words and sentences yet. It is also because I think she's an explorer archetype. Once she's explored the world thoroughly, she's done. She plays the exact same way in Wii games, too. She plays until it gets too hard, then puts it down never to play again.
Until recently, I've dismissed her requests to allow her to play Minecraft. I've made every excuse imaginable, but ultimately I knew that the game was simply too complex for her. It 'looks' cool to a kid, but of course there's too much going on under the hood for her to figure out. Right?
Wrong.
Eight days ago I caved and let her on my PC. Since then she has built what looks to be a recreation of... well, I don't have words for it. She has a house. A mine. Torches, clay bricks, armor and swords (though I put it on peaceful), doors, walkways out onto water or 12 block drops, sand towers built 30 bricks high... the list goes on. I've had to get her back to spawn point a few times when she goes out wandering. Her file is twice the size of mine, now well over 10mb. It looks as if Timothy Leary designed Hello Kitty island.
Today I came in to see what she was doing and somehow she found the internet on monitor #2 and guess what she had pulled up: The Minepedia crafting recipie page from my bookmarks. Yeah. I made her turn Minecraft off a bit ago and her avatar was wearing leather boots and an iron chestplate. And then came the question of questions: "Daddy, how do I get diamonds?"
I've been careful to limit this to an hour a day. I think more might be edging on unhealthy. She talks about her house in the game a lot... But I remain positive that this is a good thing in doses. She's using stack splitting to add and subtract. She's figuring out the words for the icons (cobblestone is tricky for a five year old). The creativity is astounding. She has really, really surprised me. The best part is that we're able to connect on something and create with it. I can only imagine what will happen if I start a server in the house so that we can build together.
TLDR: Don't underestimate your kids; Minecraft is awesome.

Minecraft taught me something about human nature. If you build a community asset like a "north south freeway" someone will go and build a bottomless pit in the middle of it.
I think this game is addictive because the feedback is so immediate. Blocks are shattered or placed with enough speed you can see progress immediately and immediately dream up and consider doing an extension. The crafting is also very intuitive in that the shapes are easy to memorize.
Good game, just so happy to see something novel and look forward to seeing how this will grow over time.

Yeah, the feedback is really encouraging. I think we've all gotten used to the "make basically no tangible progress in crafting a thing, then BAM I collected the last material I needed, I can craft the whole thing" The ability to see your progress in Minecraft is really a nice reinforcement. I remember on my very first day I wanted to build a tunnel under the water in the old f13 server world, I just started digging adn even though all I ended up with that day was a hole in the ground and a little square house over the top of it I felt like "I DID THIS" and it was nice.

Agreed. I also love the fact that geist keeps his f13 server map updated. It helps reinforce that progress is being made.
