Woohoo!  It took me a while, but I figured out where the fuck I was.  I'm using sand to mark my spot this time so it'll be more obvious from the aerial view.  Thanks!

That's basically what I did, found a great spot and started puttering and then was reset back to the spawn point.  Second time, I made a trail.  It is now a paved road. Ohhhhh, I see.

So does anyone recommend any texture packs?  Is the one in the OP good?  (I'm assuming yes, why would NiX post it otherwise? :P)

I don't have any terrible problem with the current textures..but something different can be fun.

*edit* Hmm...got a Can't connect to Minecraft servers error 3-4 times before it let me log in.

My favorite one so far is the Doku that NiX posted.

Ooo, that sounds like a fun project.  Maybe I'll wait until I can craft a compass so I don't need to futz with the map to figure out which way the spawn point is.

I knew going in that this game was likely to eat me alive, but now that I've seen the crafting aspect it's even worse.

I suggest the RPG texture pack (I'm currently using it), though simply textures are nice as well if you want that 3d Dot heroes sort of look.

I did a good bit of wandering so re-find my site, noting the direction of my movement and notable landmarks, after which I started erecting dirt obelisks on the trail.  I made the executive decision to tunnel through two hills rather than attempt to climb over, and another small one I cut a canyon instead of a tunnel.  Only a couple weeks ago did I go back and modernize the tunnels, making them 5 wide and 4 high, and cleaning up a sidepath I made through a natural cavern.  I used halfstones for all steps on the road so there's no need to hop.  I put torches on many of the dirt obelisks once nighttime came to the F13 server.  I have replaced a few of the dirt obelisks with halfstone blocks.

Next I plan on completing my tower, then I'll slowly replace all of the stone with obsidian, in case someone tries to blow it up.

The road from my lair to the spawn point has begun.  Stage one was tunneling through the mountain; I finally realized that part of why I had trouble finding my lair was that I'd built it on the opposite side of a giant hill from the spawn.  I had to roof the last bit with cobblestone to keep it monster-safe, but this displeases me because it's ugly.  Time to go get some sand and make glass...

My current base resembles an upside down T partially protruding from a mountain. I've got separate rooms for growing wheat, reeds, and cacti so far. I need to build another extension on top for a tree farm, and then I'll never need to go outside again. After that it's some stone stairs down from the mountainside, maybe some lava flows running down the sides. I've even got a back door that leads down into my primary mine.

I started digging in some random spot and it soon opened up into an endless maze of caverns that I constantly get lost in. I haven't come to an end that doesn't at least have one offshoot to continue down. I'm apparently fascinated by this simple fact because I just keep digging and exploring and collecting all the non-random ore type stuff I stumble on along the way. I figure I'm at least building a stock pile of the stuff so I'll be ready if a horse ever kicks me in the head and some creativity gets jarred loose.

Also, I 'think' some ore may have disappeared from inventory while logged out, is that common? Is it a better practice to stockpile stuff in chests?

Is there a button to identify the ore with text? I have a hard time differentiating between them.

Don't thinks there's a button to identify. I just use the pics and charts found here in the Wiki. With that link it won't take long before you identify them by sight.
Here's the chart by itself

I put a lava moat around the front of WUA Ironforge. WUAforge. Not only does the light prevent monster spawns the way a series of torches would, it incinerates any fuckers who wander up. Animals are always falling into it, I just run out and pick up the ham.

Can't get my tree farm going. Think they need a lot more room than the wiki says.

How much are you giving them around and vertically? I believe on the f13 server it was determined 5 in every direction and up to 20 in height.

Give your trees five spaces from other trees and make sure you have water within 15 spaces, and at least twenty spaces tall to grow. If your trees are underground go crazy with the torches. Puting water close to anything you grow really accelerates the process.

I've had 4 trees happily grow within a 2x2 square.

I haven't played too much with trees, but I did discover one tree planted on a single floating dirt brick will grow.

I really wish I could find two people on the internet who agree on what trees need to grow in this game.

Minecraft forums told me a 5x5x7 (7 = height) will allow a tree optimum space to grow.  This is the space I use for underground stuff and it works well.

My intended tree farm isn't large enough to grow a worthwhile number of trees if they take that sort of space. I'll have to turn it into something else and carve a new one beneath the mountain. Or into it, though I might poke out the other side. Hmm.

Fuck it, I'm hollowing out the mountain and making my base the lobby to a giant tree farm. It should only require the removal of about 6000 blocks. I have some diamond for good pickaxes, may as well use it.

Is there any trick to finding iron and diamond besides digging really deep?  I've tunneled all the way down to bedrock and started excavating horizontally from there, and I've only found enough diamond so far to make one pickaxe, which is mostly worn out so I've switched back to iron, which I'm also low on.

I ran out of ladder while way down last night.  So I started digging spirally down.  Ended up tapping tons of iron and found a few caverns to explore.

Then turned a corner, got hit by an arrow and punched in the face by a zombie and died.

I've been digging long stairways so I don't need to use wood on ladders; I started in the side of a mountain and then dug a straight 1:2 staircase (finished with half steps) all the way to bedrock and void.  Now I'm carving branches out of it at different points and excavating a big room at the bottom.  Lots of redstone down there and a little gold, but not much else.

I've fond that once you hit your first piece of bedrock, Stop. People tend to dig around bedrock and I've always found Diamond to be 2-4 blocks above the first layer of bedrock. I just tunneled down like you did, 1:2 staircase and at the bottom tunneled in 3 different directions with a couple small tunnels off of those. Typically I tunnel far enough that when I turn around I see the fog and then I start my branching tunnels.

Doing this I've found 16 diamond.

My big room is just above bedrock and is 4 blocks high, so it sounds like I'm in the right zone.

Are there any rules for where iron spawns?  As far as I can tell it's entirely random, as is coal (which I do have in abundance, thankfully).

I made my reverse mine because I was interested in seeing the spread of ore in a given area.  Iron is all over the fucking place, though it's density is definitely thicker the deeper you are.  Diamond appeared anywhere from 2-4 like nix said up to about 20ish from bottom.  I only found about 20-30 diamond in an area about 40x60 or so (I never bothered to measure it)

So I just started playing on the F13 server.  My single play experience prior to this was 5 minutes of getting lost.  Now that I'm playing on this server my life is over.  I can't stop.

Questions though.  I was digging and I ran into zombies.  I thought there were no monsters on this server?  I couldn't kill them either.  Come to speak of it, I can't kill the regular animals.  That being said, aren't spiders the only place to get string? How do you get string if you can't kill spiders?
