Yeah, anybody who plays survival mode but hasn't found a mega-cavern yet needs to keep digging. Exploring, building paths up walls or over hazards, redirecting water and lava flows, dropping things on enemies or luring them into said lava, carving ore out of the walls and hoping you survive and remember how to get back to the surface. It's a roguelike in 3d.

Until you get fed up and decide you'd rather just nuke the entire site from orbit. We'll see how it goes. I've just been stocking up on torches and ladders thus far.

I got tired of being locked up in my little tower up on the mountain, and decided to extend the torches to the entire mountaintop. First night seems to have been mostly a success, with just one splodey guy as a result. I ended up locking him up with some dirt, and I'm going to keep on making the mountain top a safe place for pigs, cows, sheep and chicken alike. They really seem to flock to whereever there's light during the night time.

awesome, for real
In six months he's got now 270k paid downloads.... for a game he made alone in < a year based on a cheesy XNA mining game.

Also, dude's 1:1 Enterprise is now the #1 gaming video for the week on Youtube - it's at like 400k views now.  And he's gotten interviews from everyone from cnet, to kotaku, to escapist, and on and on.  And Minecraft articles are popping up everywhere.

Something is definitely happening here.

I coulda sworn he just scanned in a model blueprint or something.  If he actually hand built that, that's friggin impressive.

Yes he did do that but only for the framework, he's looking for volunteers to actually build the decks.

I wish someone would outline the process to 'scan' in a blueprint and then turn it into a minecraft creation.  The fact he didnt really say HOW leads me to believe it's deceptively simple.  He's got everyone believing he built it from scratch, which is near impossible.

A quick search found this:
Quote
Have you ever seen a 3D model and wanted to make it on Minecraft? Well here's how: ModelGen.

Inspired by its 2D predecessor, seen in Osici's Minecraft Editor, the ModelGen will take any 3D model saved as a .obj file (Most good 3D modeling programs can save as that) and add it directly into your Minecraft map! The bigger you make it, the better the resolution! ModelGen allows for setting size and location of the model of your choosing. Unfortunately, it is only monochrome, but that should change soon.

So I decide to try this last night to find my Paypal account is in "limited" mode for no good reason and I can't send money until I get it unlocked today hopefully.  So meh, no Minecraft yet since I can't get the payment screen to accept my CC, because its US I'm assuming.

My wife said she might be interested in this too, what's the best way for us both to play in the same world?  Should I just host on my machine and have her connect?  Should we both just play on F13?

Both playing on F13 is probably simplest, and you get the added fun of seeing what everyone else has made (which I think is a big part of the enjoyment).

You don't need a Paypal account to use your CC:

I'm aware, but every time I try to use that option I get some error about "This card type is invalid." or something like that, seeing as it's just a standard Visa I'm assuming it won't allow it because of the different currency or something.

I had the same problem (with a Mastercard), when I bought Minecraft, I ended up linking my paypal account to my bank and doing it that way.  Not ideal, but oh well.

Jesus, that never gets old.

Dug deep into Moria today.  My system was actually hitching a bit down there and I realized that there were at least 12 mobs it was drawing.  Also, four skeletons in a single area is nigh madness.

If you've bucketed a lava spring and are thinking of putting it to some clever use, don't bother. It's either bugged to hell or running off some incredibly wonky physics. How far it spreads and whether or not it disappears when the spring is removed appears to be totally random.

In multiplayer (I dunno about single) if you place the spring on a finger of dirt/stone 2/3 blocks high (I usually place a pool around the bottom to catch it) the spring at the top will usually regenerate.  I've only had it disappear twice while obsidian farming (about 2000ish buckets worth) and I think that was a lag issue.

No I mean if you re-bucket the spring, you still have lava sitting there. Anyway, ramparts and pitfalls and doomsday lava weapons are mostly irrelevant. Just keep the exterior well lit and you'll basically never see a monster at your door.

So got my PayPal figured out last night, bought the game, logged onto the F13 server.  Looked around for a bit, was scared to touch anything and logged back out and played SP for a bit.   swamp poop  You guys have been a busy bunch.  I can certainly see the appeal of this game now that I'm playing alpha and not classic.

Welcome to the jungle!

On the f13 server the rules are don't screw with other people's stuff (unless they've made a post otherwise, for instance, someone made a Labyrinth for people to explore, there is a thread on it in the subforum).   Other than that though, just find a bit of open space and have at it!

Don't be scared. Most of the stuff around the spawn has been left to rot anyhow. You can also take the giant stone bridge at spawn to Bat Town and start a house for a beginning point.

Wasted set up lots in town, just smash the number on the lot and build! Maybe we should post a map for people to get to town.
