Ha was talking about this with friends tonight. Their 14 year old had a pretty good gaming rig from Grandpa but starting last year I've had to nurse it along for him (PSU, then HD, then GPU, easy shit). Now it's the mobo (I think, only BSOD's when it tries to connect to a network, pulled the wifi card but the ethernet port does it too, anyway, topic for that other thread. So I bring it back, talk about options with them and the kid. They totally don't get it, and don't get it so much they'd rather spend $3k on a new custom gaming rig than $150 on a new board. Meanwhile the kid is getting all annoyed because he does want to start getting into the hardware. Some is emotional attachment to the PC because his Grandpa recently passed away. But some of it is because he's at an age where he CAN start dabbling in the hardware side. I eventually help him convince his folks by explaining they should think of modern kids and computers as to old kids to cars. It's sort of a grease monkey thing, kinda unique to PCs. Which corrolates back to MC Vanilla. Yes, mods are cool. But I'm equally impressed by what non-Mod users do with just the basic tools. My kids are working on a labyrinth now complete with traps and moving walls thay change paths. I could bang that shit together in MC edit and some other stuff in a few minutes. But where's the fun in that? Learn by doing. Eventually once you master it, mods can make things easier. They can also make things easy enough you can graduate to the next level of learning (first how to manage mods, then to master the capabilities they give you, then make your own mods). But it's all a process. My own was writing a program to render graphics on my Apple //e so I could then write a module to let you create your own fonts so I could then write a module to create your own letters in a proto-word processor. Oh and ripping off Infocom text adventures. But really, who didn't do that? Eventually all that lead to Hypercard to Super Card to Director to Shockwave to Flash and then I got old and hired people far better than I ever was going to be anyway

Minecraft 2 will be a multibillion dollar attempt by Microsoft to build a ubiquitous world-creating/copying/surviving engine and attempt to use it to draw the entire forthcoming generation of technology consumers deep into a Microsoft-owned environment.

I actually think Minecraft shows some serious creativity. Not in the basic concept (dig/place voxels) and mechanic which were inspired by Infiniminer, but in the procedural environments, which he really has a gift for. I've played around with that stuff and making it look as good as it does in minecraft is not easy. Just wandering around minecraft can be fun. Infiniminer was bland, sterile sort of place that showed off the mechanics, but Notch built an infinite procedural world for people to explore and mutate and enjoy, filled with critters and baddies and gadgets and mechanisms. It's a kind of magical place and highly engaging. I think that deserves a lot of credit.
Agreed. I still enjoy the sunsets/sunrises, and exploring. Notch added most of the value.

I have only messed with vanilla version on PC and iOS.
My daughter finally wore me down. She watches all of the videos, but so far, has not realized that we need mods to do lots of the shit she sees in the videos.
Can a parent whose child plays this please direct me towards useful resources without forcing me to do research or read an 80-plus page thread?
My kid is 100 percent a creative mode player if that makes a difference. She just watches my vanilla survival, mode game. And looks up,crafting recipes on the iPad.
On your pc, use a launcher, like Technic ( http://www.technicpack.net/download) or FeedTheBeast ( http://feed-the-beast.com/launcher). I find Technic a little easier than FTB, so you might want to start with that. (Under launcher options by the X in the top right hand corner, tell it to use more memory than the default 1G - this will help. You only have to do that once unless you reinstall the launcher sometime). Click Get More Modpacks (which will take you here http://www.technicpack.net/), and find one you want to play. (I love Attack of the BTeam on Technic Launcher). Then choose "add new pack" and it will take care of all of the housekeeping for you. You then click play, and off you go. If you are both playing on different computers, one of you can create a world, open it to LAN and then the other can log in - as long as you are both playing the same modpacks. Then you can look up whichever modpack on google, and watch videos or find their wikis or whatever to figure out what you want to do. I tend to work through one mod at a time to learn it on a big pack like Attack of the BTeam (haven't even touched Witchery or Fossils or several other mods yet, and I've been playing it for a couple of months). There are also public servers for different modpacks, that have a lot of people on at the same time. Pixelmon is a lot of fun with other people - as it's basically Pokemon collecting and battling in minecraft (without any annoying mobs). Modified to add: I just read all of the posts in-between yours and the end. If all you want is a simple way to play modpacks, then using the Technic launcher is super easy, and you don't have to do anything other than use that. If, on the other hand, you wanted to set up a server for some reason, that's a whole nother ball of wax. Technic is easy and games can be LANed in the same household easily enough just like with vanilla Minecraft.

We have one PC and a shitty, Jurassic (ca 2007) laptop. Laptop probably will not run the game.
At this point, she is happy to play in creative mode. She wants mods, and obsessively watches YouTube videos about MC. They have basically replaced tv. She literally uses her TV time to watch them on the big TV via the Roku.
My main concern was mod content, but I can police that pretty well.
The kid has built a sky city and an ocelot ranch. Meanwhile, my survival mode game basically has me carving out a home underground while trying to not get lost exploring the world. I may have to swap over.

I prefer to read than watch for info. Even the best videos take 10x longer to watch than to read an explanation. Sadly, most people prefer to make videos rather than write wiki articles.

You're not talking about Direwolf20, are you? At least his videos are informative, his coverage pretty complete with relatively little wasted time, he's not 12, and, best of all, no stupid music.

I am so not a fan of "video tutorials" for everything these days. Scrubbing through 60 minutes of someone babbling to figure out the answer to a simple question is such a pain in the ass. < insert rant about kids today, etc etc >

Part of the growth of YouTube gaming channels is due to the proliferation of other devices capable of watching YouTube. I often have a video playing on the 2nd monitor or my tablet while I'm playing games.
I watch a lot of Scott Manley etc while I'm playing Kerbal Space Program and Minecraft is totally a game that you can do that with too.
Also, kids TV is shit these days, is it any wonder that the kids have moved on to other things?

No. I don't know who that is but I'm sure I'd hate him less. Stampy isn't making tutorial videos. It's just him and his friends fucking around in Minecraft or other games. Mostly Minecraft, though. He is the reason my son has started playing The Sims 4. Last birthday party I was at, one of the kids was wearing a Stampy t-shirt. His fucking laugh makes me want to slowly strangle him and his parents.

Ok, check. This is Direwolf20. https://www.youtube.com/user/direwolf20He's a grownup who does mod spotlights and let's plays. He has a lot of subscribers, and I find his videos helpful, when I watch them.

Difference is that now there's an alternative. Kids TV needs to step the fuck up or go the way of the newspaper.

I suppose one could glean useful information from these, much like one might learn how to paint while watching Bob Ross. If Bob Ross sounded like Gilbert Gotfried.

Kids' TV is actually really good at the moment, lots of quality content professionally voiced.

I wasn't going to get into the kids' TV thing but there are some fantastic shows among the shit parade. Adventure Time and Gravity Falls are easy picks that appeal to adults. I also enjoy Teen Titans Go a whole lot, as well as Regular show. Amazing World of Gumball is a house favorite. We also enjoy Steven Universe and Clarence to a large degree.
What happens is that my son will watch one of those while also watching Stampy and possibly playing Minecraft at the same time. I'm impressed at his ability or desire to multitask.

Kids' TV is actually really good at the moment, lots of quality content professionally voiced. This. Until kids are about 10. Then it kinda goes sideways. But by that point it doesn't matter because they've all moved to YouTube anyway. The kid has built a sky city and an ocelot ranch. Meanwhile, my survival mode game basically has me carving out a home underground while trying to not get lost exploring the world. I may have to swap over.
Hehe yea. We let some folks have a survival area on our server. They were knew but wanted to play MC some biased "right way". Fine, great, infinite world is infinite. About a month later we roll in on floating islands (movecraft) and float down in enchanted diamond armor just to see how they were doing. They still dabble in survival every so often People will say the "right way" about MC. They've completely missed the point. There's no such thing. MC is years of Mojang and corollary businesses reacting to a massive movement in emergent behavior. There is no way for a company to plan for that. They can want it. But the very nature of business development prevents ceding complete control of your product to that audience. The best any company can do is try to react to insights from their consumers. However, we've got 30 years from MUDs through MMOs to show how slow even the most agile organization can react. They all react through a lens. What [few] things [they can hear from] the users [willing to tell them things] want, which the company can deliver [through application of finite resources]. That's SOE's Landmark model. That's probably Microsoft's dream to. Buncha stuffed shirts surrounded by a few inspirational people begging for the resources to contrive user agency around maximizing revenue. MC is the wikipedia.org of games. No one entity can own it. Grr...

I haven't played for a few months and decided to hop back in for 1.8, but there seems to be a huge performance drop. Nothing on my computer has changed that I know of. Is 1.8 known for having potential slowness issues, or do I have a virus or something?

You're talking to someone who built a jetpack and a rocket ship on the F13 server

If you'd come play once in a while I'd show you :p Ry and I both have moonbases at this point, and I have a bit of a Mars base started. They're pretty nifty but given the scope of the project, understandably a bit light on content beyond some minor dungeons. The moon does have villages, as well.
And yeah, jetpacks. A Mekanism jetpack is a rite of passage on our current server, my base for a long time was barely navigable without one! And some free runners for those hard landings...or those times when you leave your jetpack in the hydrogen charger and jump off a cliff...(free runners use energy to absorb fall damage, I've jumped about 300 vertical blocks without taking damage and could go higher with fully charged boots; they also allow you to walk up single block elevations, so I've also not used stairs in ages). And the scuba tank also comes in handy now and again, though it needs some functional headlamps for the murky depths. Now I'm wondering if glowstone torches work underwater...
Not even curmudgeonly, there are just some really cool things in several mods. Modular Power Suits, Thaumcraft's runic armor, Quantum Armor, jetpacks from a couple mods...

Does the f13 server have a distinct lack of penis sculptures? I figure the average TTC in Minecraft is rather short. Kiddo would want to watch or play on it herself. I could give a fuck otherwise.

There are some really nicely done 8bit billboards up, not too far from spawn. Just to the north I think - they are found along a road. (Sky, I'll come visit! I've been playing Attack of the BTeam on a public server with 50-99 other people, as there are still a few mods in that pack I haven't touched - I love the ore generation on BTeam, since one doesn't have to work too hard to find it, and my Tinkers Construct Hammer that knocks out a 3x3 area at a time for easy pickup. Plus I found this cool machine in Minefactory Reloaded that you might be interested in - a Deep Storage Unit, can hold a billion of something).

Ok, so trying to set up a server.
The kid is connecting via a laptop on wireless. I have the IP for my PC; I also have the IPV4 address.
I cannot get either to connect to the server. She uses an additional profile on my Mojang account. Is this the issue?

That's a good question.
The server runs on my PC. We have a laptop that connects to the network via WiFi.
I have used the IPV4 and public IP addresses for my PC on the laptop.
I guess I will look at the router's config and see if there's something I have to do there. I enabled port forwarding. Perhaps I need to to serverIP:port?

If it's just the two of you, don't "Join server" you want to Direct Connect on the multiplayer screen. You to Localhost and your son to your computers IPv4 address. At least that's how I have to get it going.
