I am not a fan of the industrialization stuff. I like a closer to vanilla experience.
I'm not a fan of cutting down trees. All the mod does is make minecraft trees act like Terraria trees - cut down one block and the whole thing comes down.

Even beyond my personal dislike of cutting down trees in minecraft (ironic in itself), there's always those big oak trees that you can never find all the stupid branches and you're left with a floating tree afro. Also, jungle biomes.

Divine RPG is awesome.

If there's a way to turn it off, so that you can take a few blocks out of a tree and still use what's left for a cool structure, then it'd be perfect. I don't know if Treecapitator has an off switch, though.

In Technic the trick was to use a non-standard axe; Treecapitator only worked if using an axe made from vanilla materials, so a Ruby axe would only take single blocks. There's probably an easy way to remove any one axe from Treecapitator's list.

DivineRPG uses alt axe materials so it should be fine.

I'm severely disappointing my 8 year old by not being able to figure out how to install mods (got Forge installed and some mods in there but 1.5.1 has borked it all). It is not intuitive to me at all. Is there someone that would be willing to walk me through it (maybe get on teamspeak with me to provide an 'Idiot's Guide")?

Generally you just put the unextracted .zip or .jar straight into the /mods folder in your minecraft directory (usually C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft ).

Forge is a bit more complex, you have to open up the minecraft.jar and add the forge files directly. There's a nice clear bullet point list of how to do this here.

edit: You're absolutely right, it's not intuitive, I've spent much time hunting through forums full of minecraft nerds trying to install simple mods! I would more than happily pop onto teamspeak to try to help, but I fear that all I'd be doing is reading out minecraft forum posts found with Google, but in a British accent.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

So now I've gotten into a bit of a tussle with my kid over the chat in Minecraft.  How inappropriate are people generally in multiplayer chat in Minecraft?

On a specific server or in general?  And are you concerned about his behavior or the behavior of others around him?

Just in general. I'm concerned about others. He is 9.  Just curious what the general atmosphere is in that community since I don't play it.  I'm going to watch it myself for a while but was wondering what you all thought so I don't fall victim to a short observation window.

Really depends on the server in question.  From my limited experience on open servers, it's the internet.  It's a cesspit of filth.  So you may have to hunt for a server which posts decent rules and keeps them enforced.  It's probably best to find a private server.  The F13 one is a barren wasteland, but it's had kids playing on em, and when people are on and actually say anything, it's generally polite and family friendly.  Except in the very rare occasion Nix shows up. Keep your kid away from Nix.

A few of the instructional vids I've seen were recorded on open servers. Yeah, public Internet chat.

Find a good private server or stick to SSP.

You need to find a server with friends where the rules are well-enforced and keep an eye on it. Essentially imagine that otherwise it's like letting your 9-year old read Barrens chat combined with an environment that lets Barrens chat players build giant cocks and 100-foot-tall swastikas.

My 12-year old plays with a mix of boys and girls from her school and the kid who is running the server keeps a pretty tight lid on things--no swearing, no sexual talk, no bad behavior (both RL-'bad' and griefery of various kinds). I know that this is the case because she plays on the terminal that's right behind mine and I can see the screen.   smiley  But I have friends whose kids that same age play on servers that make pre-Trammel UO look like My Little Pony, and they consequently have a less positive view of the game than I do. (These are largely parents who don't play video games, so they pretty much view the entire idea as weird and incomprehensible.)

On our server we have a few who are in the 7-13 range. Mostly kids of other users.

Well, I'm only three years or so late to the party but I finally broke and bought the game. I find it oddly soothing. Haven't tried multiplayer yet or even construction mode. I'm just having fun digging and digging and occasionally dying when the controls glitch out and I start moving uncontrollably (usually when being attacked by zombies).

My daughter came downstairs and saw me playing it and said 'What's that?'.
'Minecraft.'
'That's Minecraft?' (She'd heard about it at school.)
'Yeah.'
'Must be an old version.'
'No, it's new.'
'Really? It looks like it's from the '80's!'

I just chuckled and kept on digging.

I was drinking when I wrote this, so sue me if it goes astray.

No matter what other games I try, I keep going back to minecraft. I don't know why but it's the only thing I enjoy lately.

However, I'm done with vanilla, and I don't much like playing on public servers. I might if I thought they weren't all about to shut down tomorrow without notice, or if my stuff wasn't going to get torn down by some jerk who happens upon it.

I'm toying with the idea of running  a server but given my game ADHD and my noobieness, I don't know really how much time it takes. I don't want to run an empty server.

Also, modpacks. Tekkit modpack through Technic Launcher seems pretty stable (plus you can go to the moon now), but that other one that makes minecraft harder (TerraFirmaCraft) seems like it might be fun too in a hitting your head with a hammer kind of way.

Is there a good method to figure out how much RAM a hosted server needs for a particular modpack and number of people?

I don't host a public server, but I run one for my son and I to play on at the same time.  It takes zero effort or time to get it going once you download the executable.  The 'hard' part is getting it visible through your router and finding/ remembering to leave a computer on all the time to run the .exe.

If you don't want to make it public, activate the whitelist command and ta-da, nobody but Ops and your selected players can ever get on even if you publicly post the address.

If I was going to do it, I'd use a host service rather than my own hardware. It sounds like an awful lot more trouble to host it myself and the hosting services often have helpful plugins. I don't know much about it, though.

The hosting services are pretty expensive, last I saw.  Host your own is free, it really is super simple to set up, and works just fine for at least up to 5 people simultaneously (the most we've tried so far) on a decent gaming rig, even counting one of the people is also running the client on the server.  We leave ours on for weeks at a time, while playing other games (mostly MMOs) with negligible noticeable performance issues for either the game or folks playing on the server.  The only caveat would be make sure you have a good amount of RAM, and spend a few minutes researching how to give more than the default amount of RAM to the java vm running the server.

Yes, I know I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?

I've been running a server too for quite a while, and it seems to never take more than 5-6% of the CPU on my late-2010 machine.   I flirted with the idea of running it on a separate computer-of-an-age-I-could-not-remember (but it had a 10 gig hard drive, that's my only clue as its age).

On THAT one, it took like 70% and ran like ass, so back it went to my main machine.  But nobody's ever complained that it was slow when I was doing other stuff.  Despite the goofy coding/being in Java/various minecraft oddities that are always coming up with the game itself, the server seems to run pretty well.

TechnicLauncher has a new pack out called qCraft. Quantum Minecraft, anyone?

Check out the wiki, here.

Quote
KEY QUANTUM SCIENCE CONCEPTS REPRESENTED IN QCRAFT

Through blocks, items and objects you can construct, qCraft represents three fundamental concepts of quantum science in the Minecraft world. In the real world, these concepts happen on scales no bigger than a molecule, but in qCraft, they happen on the scale of entire blocks (or bigger).

Observational Dependency

Some of the earliest experiments that lead to modern quantum physics showed a surprising result: observing certain things on the subatomic level (like photons) actually caused them to have different properties. And it isn’t just that the things appear different depending on how we observe them -- like looking at the world through sunglasses makes it appear darker -- it’s that the things actually are different depending on if (or how) they are observed: as if you put on the glasses and the world itself actually became darker.

In the Minecraft world, you could think about this as a block that, when you look at it from the west, is stone but when you look at it from the south it is a pumpkin.

Hey folks.

Evil Chickens, home of a few of F13 World of Tanks and WarThunder players, is now hosting a Minecraft server.

Its a FTB:Unleashed server which is similar to tekkit/technic. Also added onto the server are ForgeEssentials to manage chat, teleportation, homes, and spawn.
Being as the server is whitelisted it prevents griefing and allows for team project creation without interference.

If you are interested, let me know through PM what your username is and I will forward you the server address and get your username whitelisted.

Necroing this thread to let people know I'm hosting a modded f13 server.

Mod List:

It may seem like a lot, but for the most part it's all just in addition to what vanilla Minecraft offers and won't impact your experience on the server if you just want to play vanilla with f13 people.

If you already have access to the Minecraft forum then you can find the server info in the stickied server info thread. Otherwise, shoot me a PM and I'll get things sorted out for you.

We use the Technic Launcher which will do all the leg work for you. I'll create a guide to getting started and post it in the Minecraft forum.

Edit: Guide created and available in the Minecraft sub-forum if you have access. If you don't, let me know.

Please please PLEASE tell me the reason this thread hasn't already exploded with this news is because it has already been debunked:

http://online.wsj.com/articles/microsoft-near-deal-to-buy-minecraft-1410300213

Microsoft possibly buying Minecraft for $2bn.

Lots of places carrying it but I think they all point back to this WSJ article.

If true yet more proof everyone's got a price. But man, we now get to see that timelines where a large publisher fucked up Minecraft by making it a platform exclusive with goddamned microtransactions and energy meters all over the place.
