Okay, crafting is straight forward.  Furnaces on the other hand, I fail at.  Somebody have a quick explanation?  I was just hoping to make some glass!

To use a furnace you need to light it manually before you can use it.  As the server has Llamacraft the steps are

1. In chat type /lighter to create a flint & tinder (it will spawn in front of you so you need to pick it up).

2. Create/place furnace

3. Build a cobblestone wall behind the furnace.

4. Equip the flint & tinder and use it on the wall above the furnace.  If you have placed it correctly the fire will burn on top of the furnace briefly and it will be lit for use for a short time.

Lighting the furnace this way doesn't replace the need for fuel, you just use the furnace window as you would normally in a single player game.

Warning: Do not just set and forget, if you move away too far from the furnace whilst its working it will switch off and you will lose everything you placed in there.

If you are nearby and don't die the furnace will stay working while it has fuel and materials.

However as soon as it runs out of either it will stop working, and if you dont not have the furnace screen open at that time, destroy whatever is left in it, materials to be smelted and materials produced.

If you AFK do it with the furnace screen open. If you are working nearby check regular and keep topping it up, and make sure you have it open when it is about to finish.

8 coal smelts a stack of 64.

Also, don't light the furnace with materials inside. They will disappear as the fix is simply replacing the unlit furnace with lit furnace ID.

I've been operating on the assumption that it is possible to dig deep enough to get into a pool of lava and that, if I did so, this would be bad.  Has this happened to anyone?

Any lava I've found has been in underground caverns and doesn't tend to spread too far on the horizontal axes. I have yet to reach the bottom of the world, though.

I wanted to find lava, but I didn't. There's a lot of blue and a lot of death.

I've found the bottom, black streaked rock (either obsidian or border blocks).  It's uneven and there are holes which you can fall through from place to place.

Okay.  I've been running around on the server a bit and there is some kick ass stuff there.  Can anyone tell me how you make steps?  All mine end up a full block or more in height.

There is like, a half block...block in the tool bar somewhere.

there is an actual stairs block but it's bugged in multiplayer, and hard to position correctly.  All recipes are at minepedia http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting.

Essentially, placing 6 stones in your tool chest in a step like manner will make the stairs.  Many of us opt not to fight the buggy block for now and instead use half steps, which are 3 blocks placed in a row in the chest.  Takes twice as much distance to raise the same height, but it works.

Half-blocks are awesome. I also like to stack them into full blocks and use them as white blocks for some contrast. They also make for a great floor.

Is Balrog down there?

I have several times been thinking "I have delved too deep", but so far no Balrog.  I have struck water once or twice, but due to the rate at which the water simulation works, if you keep your wits about you, you can plug leaks before it goes bad.

The stairs aren't actually permanently bugged, it's just that the "auto-fit" (rotation) is done server-side and isn't propagated immediately to the client. If you relog or do enough changes in the chunk so that the entirety reloads they'll appear as they should.

I've put together a helpful diagram to assist in how to place them:

Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

- Nothing's free in the waterworld.

I would really like to see some nighttime monsters like in the single player version to mix things up a bit.  It is nice to build stuff unmolested (except by the dragon), but it really needs something else.

Also, is anyone else having trouble with doors on the server?  I can place them just fine but they won't let me through.

right clicking them open and closed is apparently bugged.  Left clicking them instead should work fine.

Having people carefully building structures and monsters that explode all blocks in a wide area seems a cruel combination though.

Monsters are planned, though Notch has made mention that it won't be an easy task for him.

It always says the server is up awesome, for real (haven't gotten around to automating that part)

People are connected but I do see errors like this: "Took too long to log in" so there seems to be some network connectivity issues. The server doesn't seem to be particular overloaded or anything like that.

That's the error I'm getting. Actually, now MC won't even start. And minecraft.net doesn't seem to be working either. :( I was really excited about finishing my mountain fortress tonight.

*sigh* Is something up with the server? Whenever I try to connect it times out. Other servers work so it's not MC.net down again...

Bought this today, still playing around in single-player mode. Though I should have waited a day or two more, and then tried to time it so I'd become Minecraft-buyer number 100 000 =P

(Stats currently at 94 265 as I write this.)

For anyone who ever asked about donating for the server, it would be better if you just donated to f13 (top right of forums) as Schild is in need of donations to keep the site going.

So, uh, here's a Dwarf Fortress to Minecraft converter. This may be enough to kill anyone by slow starvation in front of the screen if it's awesome.
