Night time is survival mode only I think.  Multiplayer survival mode isn't implemented yet.

Technically the server is Survival, Notch just released it well before he was ready because people kept asking.

so what is the deal with liquids, should we remove it if we find it while digging/building, or can we meld it into our work

and does it really cause that big of a problem with the newer version?  I know the old one where water flooded endlessly did, while it was doing chunk updates.

It causes issues with the Alpha server because it's not optimized, so constant and huge updates to chunks for water/lava flow have been causing disconnects and server instability. The game is pretty good about generating very small water sources, so that's not an issue. It's when users start placing huge cascading waterfalls that things start to go bad.

For the most part, it's the reason why most of the server admin mods revolve around being able to remove certain blocks and restricting as much of the inventory hacks as possible.

See, this is why I should never sleep.  I wake up and all the mods are working again, all that time wasted!

Has anyone been to the edge of the map?  What happens if you go there?

I am responsible for the expansion of the map on the right side. Ohhhhh, I see.  Which is neat because I now have a general idea where Yegogard is.  Or, is going to be.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

I have my water under control, but if it is a problem let me know. I would rather fix myself if it is. It took a fair while to do.

I don't know if I broke my client or if there is something wrong on the server, but I can't collect things anymore.  Dig a hole, it refills.  Crappy because I was digging out a tunnel before I was disconnected.

Confirmed. Server is not allowing block updates.

Seems to work if I move away from the spawn area.

In other news, I just replaced my DSL modem due to having four desyncs this morning.  Crossing fingers.

Ah, yeah, you're not allowed to build or destroy in the spawn area. Supposedly Ops can do it, but I haven't been able to since Trippy added me to the Op list.

Lamaros tried to explain it to me last night by my downs syndrome kicked it; how do furnaces work?   I build it, I /lighter for the tool but I don't know what to do with the tool.  Lam told me to build a wall behind the forge and use the tool on it, but that just got me burned if too close and nothing much else

Equip the tool and use it on the top of the furnace. It will start a flame briefly and the furnace should work after that. It will be active until no one is around and everything will disappear if it's no longer in an active chunk, so I usually sit there and watch it.

Ah, so the wall is behind and one block above the furnace?  I tried clicking on top of the furnace but that just opens the furnace.

edit: indeed.  I got it working, thanks for detailing that

You can also light it from below, which is much safer. Just put the furnace on top of a block and then destroy the block below it.

Also, sad news about the update:

Quote
There won’t be a Friday update today, because I bit off more than I could chew.

I think I got started with the coding too late in the day. It’s 5 pm now, and I have nothing at all implemented. My first attempt was to do biomes, but that ended up being very slow and very bad (sudden wall of snow for no reason!).
Then I tried doing monster villages, which turned out to be much more complex than I thought. Like seriously a lot more complicated..

Bleh!

The base code I wrote for biomes is definitely usable, but I need to speed it up (easily done), and make it much more intuitive to the player what the current temperature is or so. I could either do a simple postprocessing effect where cold areas have a cool tint (blue), and hot areas have a warm (red) tint, or play around with fog density and color. Or possibly particle effects..

For villages, I need to come up with something clever. It would be great to have small huts with roads and so, but doing that procedurally in streaming terrain is far from trivial, heh.

I'm frankly not looking forward to monsters all that much anyway, I'm enjoying my building projects in peace.  I think that a style of server with monsters (well I guess its called "survival" for a reason) would be fun, but given the mentality we've already formed on the server, I feel like it would be pretty jarring to the experience to suddenly have creepers running around.

Says you.  I can't wait to build a monster pit I can drop trespassers into.

By the sounds of it, this might be far off. Notch has made a few comments that make it seem like implementing monsters into the world could quite the challenge for him.

Indeed, and given fact that he was talking about villages and map creation, it might be something that is a big enough addition to make old maps obsolete/outdated which would give us a reasonable transition point anyway, rather dumping a bunch of monsters into the current one.   Pure speculation of course.

Actually, one thing you may not realize - you don't have to create a new world, you just have to walk to the edge so more is procedurally generated. The newly generated bits will have the new content.

So far, all of the updates have been like that.

That's not a problem for SP, but in MP it would be a pain in the ass, at least in its current state.

Yes, and no. You can run cartographer to see how much of the world people have explored, then just find an edge.

Some people have hacked in 'save' and 'load' so that you spawn where you logged out, and there are 'explorer' types who just walk in one direction which bloats the map, but as soon as some sort of faster-than-walking transportation is implemented, you should be able to get to an 'edge' without too much trouble.

Another possibility is simply changing the world spawn-in point to somewhere new within say 5-10 mins walk. That's beginning to happen on servers that have a bit too much construction near the spawn. It's not a new server, you can still get to the old stuff, but it allows you to play with any of the new stuff that was added while still being able to check out the old.

Hrm, do tell about adjusting the spawn in point or being able to "save"/"load". I'm actually not fond of starting in the original spawn point that the server has, we've built a lot of the area around it up (or its been mangled.) Either way, I'd like to be able to reach a more remote or "clean" area without walking for 10-15 minutes, if not longer.

I really can't wait for this game to be finished. Everything you guys have posted shows amazing potential, but I'm not down with paying for alpha.

I kind of like where our spawn point is now (ignoring the water issues). It makes it easy to tell that a server update or whatnot is working at a basic level.

What the game really needs a /loc command and a /tploc <loc> command.

Seriously? $13 or 10 euro is too much of a price to pay? Don't let 'alpha' fool you, it's completely playable, it's just sparse content-wise in some spots.

The save/load stuff doesn't work with the current version yet, it broke a day or two ago, but I'll point you to a link when they hack it back in. I believe it was the same admin toolkit that allowed you to adjust the spawn point. It also came with a "/tp name" to teleport to other players. you can do /home to go back to the spawn at least. Sadly, all this stuff that's being hacked in is for people who are admins/programmers; they are decompiling the .jars and shoving code segments in.

As annoying as it is, server stuff is going to wait another week or two or three until some basic stuff gets coded in instead of hacked in.

I really don't mind having to hoof it, I think we just need to start making more roads/paths so that its easier and faster to get around, and you can always follow it back to civilization. Something like a compass would be nice though, I have to admit.

I think an overview is left out intentionally to make you think about things before running off.

Clouds are your compass. People have decided clouds move to true north, so you just stop before you leave where you are and take note of the direction.

Doesn't need to be moved, but having a persistent save for where you logged and being able to /home to get back would be nice.

I like the location also, just that structure/land there needs to be razed. It's really annoying that the block the spawn point was above has been taken out and the ground below has been taken for bricks resulting in falling to my death a few times.

Not complaining about the artwork at the spawn point but it really shouldn't of been done there, i'd rather just a small island with all the bridges off to different sections.
