Record of Agarest War is an Anime-influenced SRPG; the weeaboo is strong with this title, so if that bothers you, you can stop reading now. The actual battle graphics are nothing special: 2d sprites with the occasional flashy special; the character portraits, on the other hand, are beautiful and full of fanservice. The key element of the story is that you don't just play through as a single main character, but rather 5 generations of a family (think Phantasy Star III); it also features multiple endings and a Dark/Light alignment system based on story choices. All in all it seems pretty cool so far, story-wise.

Battles take place on a relatively small grid; RoAW lacks both elevation and terrain effects found in other SRPGs. As a result, combat focuses on strategic positioning of your (up to 6) characters, rather than movement onto advantageous terrain. You characters can also use combo moves, which must first be discovered by using the appropriate moves together. When your characters level up, you get stat points to distribute on a weighted scale based on class: Str costs less for fighters, while Int costs more, etc. There's also a weapon (and skill) upgrade system, a crafting system, and all sorts of grindy bits for those who like a mechanically deep game.

Record is available for Xbox 360 on disc (in a box labeled "Really Naughty Limited Edition" complete with a pillowcase and a mousepad with gel boobs) or for Playstation 3 via download on PSN. If you're a fan of Anime or Strategy RPGs, Buy it.

I don't think it's the weeaboo that's going to scare people off.  The marketing campaign behind this thing insured that no self-respecting person would be caught dead picking this game up.

The Limited Edition mousepad does look quite comfortable though.

I'm a sucker for this type of game (I mean SPRG, not loli) but I'm playing Tactics A2 right now. Just slightly less embarrassing.

You know... that's just downright creepy and weird.  What marketing department actually put together a trailer like that and thought "this will REALLY make people want to buy this game!"

I really thought it was some fuckabout joke video from one of the game sites. Until the end, when it clearly wasn't.

 ACK!
