The opening up of the IE window whenever I wanted to look at a screenshot made knives fly out of my eyes.  Is that gone?

Really like it so far.  Only thing I miss is being able to sort-to-top installed games like in the old listing (can only show Installed or All).  And there needs to be an option not to auto-play videos when you go to a game's store page.  That's annoying as fuck.

Pretty much, it opens up the Screenshots gallery in a separate application window.  It's still just showing you a (rather pretty) web page, but no IE.

You should have the option for sure, but the videos are an improvement for me....you can turn off sound on the videos by toggle, if that counts.

I'll wait until the final product; the beta I tried was slow and unwieldy with far too many gimmicks for my tastes.

Slow and Unwieldy is not what I'd describe it as considering the previous IE abortion that passed for a front-end. I can't even compare the two - or the memory footprint of the new one versus the original (which is so vastly improved it's not even funny).

What I have now works. I click on the games tab, I double click the game I want to play and I hit play. I don't have to wait for the choppy client to slowly load my games page, wait for it to load a random splash screen, and then hit play. The gradient also looks like ass... But it's a beta client; so as I said...

The gameplay stats seem to work well in actual Steam games (like Dragon Age) and in games with Steam Achievements you get information about that instead of hours played.  I'd check if the "15mil hours in the past two weeks" hilarity schild noticed is an isolated case, but the only other non-Steam game shortcut I have is the SC2 Beta and that's just refusing to launch from Steam now Heartbreak.

I haven't tried buying anything, which I guess is sort of the point of Steam, but if you can stomach generic beta quirkiness (like the below) I'd definitely suggest trying it out.  Also, if it breaks your install to the point of not being able to start it, just add -clearbeta to your Steam shortcut when you launch and that'll get you back to stable (hat tip: comments over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun).

I don't have to wait for the choppy client to slowly load my games page, wait for it to load a random splash screen, and then hit play.

You can just use Games List or Grid view instead of Details.  Details is nice because you can see if friends are playing the game without having to open up the little Friends window, but I haven't actually launched something from the Steam window since they added Jump List support (except for the first time, natch) a while back.

Oh god I love custom categories.

Edit: For those wondering, that first category has 8 games in it.

So far it is good.  Reminds me, though, that I need to find out how to remove a couple non-Steam-game items from my list.  Still no obvious delete button.

I simply did not delete enough things from my steam directory. Ohhhhh, I see.  That's the problem with carrying the same directory structure since Steam was released.

Holy crap this new UI brings my system to a crawl.  My CPU usage jumps to 80% on steam every couple of seconds and makes everything pause.  I hope that doesn't persist!

That must be tough for them to nail down (hence beta test, SEND FEEDBACK, VALVE IS GOOD ABOUT THAT SHIT). On my system it's a dream come true (/reiterate).

Does that include the right-click menu for the tray icon?

Someone who is registered on the forums please ask for chat logging. Every other chat client ever has that option, yet it is mysteriously missing from steam.

Supposedly there are a bunch of Mac OS X files running around in the Steam client. Looks like the move to Webkit may not have been just to kill the idiot child that is IE.

This Steam forum post has a fix for the no text problem.

That would kill Steam, but not the new UI.

Kill the Steam process, add -clearbeta to your Steam shortcut, and relaunch Steam.
