To be serious, it's sad what the Rambo franchise became.. I put First Blood up there with Deerhunter and Taxi Driver, as far as shellshocked Vietnam vet movies go.

OK, maybe not that good/realistic, but it's solid. Rocky as well... Best sports movie ever (and I guess he did sort of redeem it a bit with the last Rocky Balboa movie.. it wasn't great, but it wasn't stupid either).

That said, I'll definitely see this.

The book First Blood was adapted from was really good, I definitely recommend it.

Stallone is an interesting guy.  He's made some of the absolute shittiest shit movies in the last decade, but he also finished out the Rocky series with a fantastic movie, and managed to make another Rambo movie that was actually good.  I'm not saying I'm hopeful for this next one, especially considering what I read here, but I'm not going to rule out the possibility of it being good, either.

One more thing: any guy with the balls to make a movie like The Expendables just for the fun of it, one that could potentially be a ginormous flop, has a fan out of me.

There is talent hidden away in there somewhere. Rocky is proof of it, for sure. But even some of his crappier movies, I didn't think he himself was bad. He was a good Judge Dredd. And I still want a steel finish 49 Merc just because of Cobra.   If everyone he plans on being in the Expendables is really in it, then it'll be good fun.

I remember Stallone talking about how, while Rambo was definitely not the end for the series like Rocky Balboa was for Rocky, the next one would be a departure from the previous movies.  I agree the ending of 4 was a great way to close the series, what with the army jacket and classic theme, but I'm cool with another as long as they preserve the realistically-portrayed violence from the last movie.

It is an action movie to be sure. But it is also very much about a traumatized soldier. It's a stupid action movie.  Colonel Trautman, Stallone's breakdown at the end of the movie, etc, all come off as extremely, extremely cheesy.  The movie has not aged well.  Taxi Driver?  That's a fucking psychological portrait.  It's in the AFI's top 100 for a reason.  As far as the Deer Hunter goes, it's good, but not anywhere near a perfect movie.  Exactly for how many years was Christopher Walken playing Russian roulette in Saigon?  It just doesn't seem like a gambling habit that would lend itself to a whole lot of longevity.

First Blood and The Deer Hunter were both made by non-veterans, and it shows.  Taxi Driver was made by a non-veteran, but it's also not a Vietnam movie, or really even a "whacked out veteran" movie.  Travis Bickle is certainly delusional, and we know he was a marine, but the story doesn't dwell on it.  He could just as easily be a Bernard Goetz type of character.

if we were to really talk about whacked out veteran movies, i liked heaven and earth a lot (and made by a veteran to boot). i think deerhunter is pretty interesting though for still having some relevant sentiments, and yet, only being made soon after the war ended. and it didn't have to go into full on col. kurtz fantasy territory like apocalypse now (even though that was great in it's own way, obviously).

Let's put it this way. First Blood is quite cheesy in parts. It's an action movie. But it's also about similar themes to these other movies and for me, at least, more watchable and entertaining than Taxi Driver and especially the Deer Hunter. Those movies are better from a perspective of movies as art. First Blood is more fun.

They neutered the book, he doesn't kill a single fucking person, bar the dude in the helicopter. In the book he is probably getting close to triple digits, he is a killing machine, moral Rambo avoiding casualties pisses all over the premise. Rambo is not a "good guy",Trautman is not some fucking father figure and the sheriff is not really a bad guy (he is also a reflection of a vet who can assimilate back into society, as opposed to Rambo). First Blood would have been so much better if they didn't Hollywood it up.

That being said, First Blood is the best in the franchise.

Eh, close enough. But yeah, I laughed my ass off like everyone else when I heard about ANOTHER Rocky and Rambo. Lo and behold, they were both actually really good. So fuck it, maybe Rambo vs Predator (or whatever) will be okay.
