Perhaps I should have put 'tragic mulatto' in quotes. It's a literary term for a character stereotype where a person of mixed race is rejected (or perceives themselves to be rejected) by both racial groups. Its named for mulatto characters in American romantic fiction but has subsequently been commonly used to described any mixed race stereotype where the author describes the character as being isolated because of their mixed racial identity.
