Somehow, the hydraulic cylinder in my chair broke as soon as I put it together years ago.

Luckily, at its lowest setting, my chair is the perfect height for my desk.

That's as stupid as "fan death."

Getting killed by an exploding chair is unlikely, considering they probably pressurize to ~80 psi when a fucking detonating scuba tank at 2300 psi can't kill the person checking it's pressure.

Fuck, you people.

Except....  Explosive force and shrapnel isn't the only way sitting on an explosive gas release can kill you.  Google is failing me, but I distinctly remember reading about an accident a few years back involving two auto mechanics horsing around with the compressed air nozzle.  One of them put it against the other's butt and pulled the trigger, meaning to startle him.  Instead, he over-inflated the guys colon and he died (rather slowly, as I recall).

They say the guy on the chair died of bleeding.  They don't say what caused the bleeding, or where it was.  Or maybe he just had really bad luck (even worse than happening to sit on an exploding chair) and a piece of that shrapnel went through his femoral artery.

--Dave

EDIT: Also, the guy working on the scuba tank got lucky, there are probably a dozen different ways that could have gone slightly differently and killed him.  Having the tank in water when it exploded almost certainly saved his life as the water dissipated the worst of the shockwave.  Of course, it was probably the thermal shock of being put in the water that tipped the tank over the edge, so it's a bit of a push.  The lucky one is the scuba diver that didn't have the equivalent of 3 sticks of dynamite strapped to his back (and there the water would have turned it into a shaped charge aimed right at him).

EDIT2: Actually it does say that it was bleeding from his rectum that killed him, and the picture of the chair only shows blood in the one spot, so the femoral is out.

Having worked around them all through my adult life, the thought of a compressed gas cylinder exploding always freaks me out.  They're generally safe, but the damage one of those can do is incredible.  Shrapnel like a grenade, but thankfully designed not to fragment, or if the end snaps off then like a missile.

That guy is very lucky to be alive.

I recall my high school chem teacher telling us that if the end of this tank of hydrogen were to somehow break off, the gas inside would propel it through multiple walls, through anything between them, and out the side of the building before it stopped.  I've been slightly nervous around tanks of compressed gas ever since.

Mythbusters did an episode of this. They designed a rig that would knock the top off of it so it would go across the floor into a wall.

Thanks, youtube!.

True story:

5/6 years ago, I went diving with this group of people. First dive of the day was a wreck dive and two of the guys took off to go explore the bottom end of the wreck which was quite deep (40+m or something). One of the guys pulls out his slate wrote something on his slate and handed it to his buddy. His buddy read the slate looked back at the first guy who released the valve on his pony bottle and shot all the way back up to the surface.*

What had happened was that the guy had got narked and what he'd written on his slate was "I'm a polaris missile".  Miraculously he did actually survive although obviously had the bends and had to be rushed to the nearest chamber.

Entirely irrelevant to this story but the video of the gas cylinder made me think about it.

*I can't actually remember whether it was releasing his pony bottle or dumping a load of air into an SMB/lifting bag. Either way, he did take off like a missile apparently.

It would have been dumping a load of air into a lift bag (and holding on) or his BC.  The pony bottle would vent harmlessly out of the regulator.

That's what I thought when I was writing it. Now you mention it - it must have definitely been his BC because I don't recall anyone having a lift bag and an SMB would have been too small. We didn't even see it happen because viz was < 10m.

That story made me laugh, mostly because I'm wondering how far he up he went when he broke the surface. Then I think of how horribly bent he must have been and I go a bit more ACK! I'm guessing the narks wore off half way up as well, which definitely wouldn't be nice.

Also, he couldn't have been using a crack bottle on his BC? That would seem to best fit, though a lift bag would definitely do the job as well.

I saw an oxygen bottle from a welding rig fall off a crane once while being lifted. It hit the ground valve first which caused the tip to break off. The thing took off like a missile and punched through two steel narrowboats and a breezeblock wall. We recovered it about a quarter mile away.
