In another brilliant demonstration of the power of DRM, those who bought the PC version of Gears of War found themselves unable to play the game. Apparently, the DRM was set to disable the game when the date crossed January 28, 2009. Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

EPIC's only reply has been 'we're working on it'  Mob

Of course, there's no need to add that those who pirated the game were not affected by this.  Rimshot

Update. Mark Rein says it's the anti-cheat code that got borked.

Damn, I've got that game in the shelf behind me. Haven't opened it yet though. Maybe I'll download a cracked .exe before I install it to ensure I can play it when I do get around to installing. This of course will make me a dirthy, filthy pirate and criminal, according to some here.

You bought the game. Cracking it at this point falls under fair use imo.

Or you can just wait for the patch.

Actually, could you make a case that this is reverse-engineering for interoperability, as specified under the DCMA? awesome, for real

Incorrect edit. Thank you for playing.

I'll probably wait for the patch. But while I'd happily get a cracked .exe, it was a bit of a jab at some on the board who believe using a cracked .exe file on a game you legitimatey bought and paid for, even if the game won't work is morally and legally wrong. Do a search for the big DRM threads if you want to know what I'm talking about. Bring popcorn.

I'm a big anti-piracy advocate. But you buy the title and you can certainly put it on one computer with extra patches / mods / no CD cracks, IMO.

Cracking a game you already own is still stealing bread out the mouths of the cute little sons and daughters of the developers. So yeah, if you want Mark Reign's daughter to die of malnutrition then go right ahead.

Of course, developers selling you a game that doesn't work is kosher and READ THE FINE PRINT IN THE EULA HA HA OWNED MOTHERFUCKERS!

Wat?

The only way I can see anyone justifying that sentiment is because by using a crack you're encouraging those who make the cracks in the first place. In which case... well... that's just looking at the problem entirely backwards.

Seriously, I don't get this. I PAID FOR THE FUCKING THING. Just because it doesn't work without me removing the DRM it doesn't mean me paying for it again will magically make it work. In fact it not working makes me more likely to never buy one of your games again. Just look at the damage Starforce has done to companies like Ubisoft, etc.

That and common fucking sense.

I think 5 people with something to prove kept those piracy threads going. The rest us were playing bridge down at the club.

Hi from a newbie guys.....Anyway, Took me 2 weeks to beat it, so I would say a month is more than enough. Now if you are playing it on insane mode I would need a little more  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

I just beat the original Halo a couple months ago. At this rate I should get to GOW by about 2012. (I'm an optomist!)
