I just read the ratings for Chuck are down. I really hope they don't cancel it, it's a damn fun show.

It's unlikely to be cancelled before the end of this season. Because of the writers strike and the down economy networks not only don't have their regular stable of "replacement" shows waiting around in case some of their other shows are doing badly they also don't want to have to negotiate the ad revenues for the replacement show, even if they had on. Depending on what projects they have in the works, though, there's a decent chance this will be its last season: http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/02/24/chuck-heroes-cancellation-worries-seem-unwarranted/13460

I seriously don't get american programming schemes.
Chuck was solid until the writers strike hit and it was the only (or one of the very few) show that didn't continue after the strike. Afetr an 8 month hiatus it lost a lot of viewers.
It took Chuck the better part of Season 2 to reclaim at least a part of that viewer base and they had gotten to the point where Chuck got traction again only to put it on hiatus again for two months and then start off with a stupid gimmicky 3d episode.
Also I don't agree with the tvbythenumbers assessment. When Leno get's his 10 o'clock slot on weekdays. 5 additional timeslots for original programming are lost. That means more than 200 hours per year less for TV shows on NBC. That will put a lot of pressure on underperforming shows, especially if the move works out.
Obviously neither Chuck nor Heroes will be cancelled before end of season because most of the episodes have already been greenlit and produced or are in production and NBC wouldn't have anything to fill the timeslot with.
If Leno's move works out I don't expect them to get renewed however.

In the US the "regular season" (as opposed to the Summer season) is more weeks than the networks buy episodes for a standard scripted show (typically 22 or 24 episodes for a "full season"). Depending on the popularity of the show (read: "ad revenue") they will either show reruns of that show to fill in the weeks or they'll show other stuff. Chuck was one of those shows where they showed "other stuff". That's not atypical, especially these days where's it's cost effective to run a 10 - 12 episode reality show in those spots.
"Serial" scripted shows in particular like 24, Heroes and Lost tend to get the "other stuff" treatment since showing reruns just confuses things (imagine watching reruns of 24 interpresed between the new episodes). For Chuck they could've showed reruns but instead showed other stuff including the reality show "Superstars of Dance" (which was actually a decent show if you like dance).

Replace it with other stuff? That's what Reality Shows are MADE FOR!!!!
Yeah, American TV execs will think nothing of replacing this show with cheaper to produce reality TV. Fuck, they can bang those things out quicker than a gaggle of Bangladeshi children can sew up some Nikes.
I finally caught up with Chuck. I was disappointed they didn't continue the Fulcrum intersect subplot, but I hope they save it for later. I'm really going to miss this show when it's gone.

Fox doesn't interrupt the run of 24 once it's started, because they realize people would quickly lose track of what's going on and thus lose interest. That's why they started the season in January, so it wouldn't get interrupted by sporting events, debates and the like.

Unfortunately, that movie is the only time Elisha Cuthbert ever looked that hot whereas I'm pretty sure Yvonne over there would look hot in a durka.

It took them that long to catch-on to the fact people were melting away or getting lost and giving up with long breaks in the show.

Oh, they're about to trim the fat on Chuck. Literally and figuratively.
Edit: I hope they don't pussy out. I'm sick of the fucking Buy More crew. It's too TGIF for me.
Edit 2: Oh wow, the Ex Machina NOT REALLY product placement was awesome.

Poor Chuck, you are so good yet you will get canceled.
Did anyone feel like the latest episode was cobbled together a bit? Some of the cuts were way too fast.

It better not get cancelled. And if it does, and it's because they don't have enough hours with the Leno show I hope the Leno show dies so horribly that NBC finds themselves humiliated. Actually, I hope that anyway. Man, the episode from last week was awesome with his dad and Chevy Chase.

After playing around with certain VPN solutions and such things I was finally able to circumvent the stupid geoblocking schemes employed by your broadcasters (seriously, why block fucking talk shows? Nobody outside the US will license them anyway) and had a chance to watch the current crop of late shows.
That led to an important question: Why exactly do they give Leno millions of dollars to host a talk show at 10 p.m.? He is by far the unfunniest of the bunch. Conan and Letterman just seem to be going through the motions and the only one that's actually great is Craig Ferguson although he recycles his gags to often.
My impression is that America could do with LESS late shows not more and if they cancel Chuck because of Bigjaw Leno I am seriously pissed off.

NBC wanted to move Leno out gracefully so they offered up the 10pm show bullshit.

Talk shows are also cheaper to produce than most other TV. They are reality TV and the other networks are watching, hoping that Leno catches on so they too can cancel their 10pm Dramas and save some bucks while they retain viewer/ ad numbers.

The move was anything but gracefully. When Leno agreed to give up the Tonight Show to Conan O'Brien, NBC didn't offer anything to Leno in exchange at that time. I'm guessing they figured he would ride off into the sunset or something like Carson. But Leno, being the workaholic that he is, starting looking around for other opportunities including doing stuff for NBC competitors. When he started talking to ABC, which doesn't have a "before midnight" talk show to compete with NBC and CBS, NBC panicked and effectively gave Leno whatever he wanted to keep him on the network. Edit: I should say whatever he wanted except for getting the Tonight Night, which if it was up him he would still be doing, back.

Terminator has already gotten it. They haven't announced anything but the word is the sets are destroyed, the actors are looking for new jobs, and the producer has flatout said it's over. That said, Chuck better not get cancelled. If it does, I'm done with NBC.

I don't think they have any plans to stop losing viewers. It's triage now, have smaller audiences but at least make money on it. They're paring down to become a smaller network since they know they can't compete with other formats.

They are clearly writing Chuck as if they believe this is the last season. Since they got back from the break this year they've been focused on resolving his Intersect back story. Maybe they'll be back next season but it doesn't look like they'll be leaving any major dangling plot lines. The writers/producers on Life did the same thing on that show (another NBC show for which this is likely to be its last season).

Great episode last night, I really like their mythos with the Intersect and Fulcrum. The writing is still as strong as ever and the character development is continuing. I like what they did with "Awesome" but I do hope the wedding happens, kinda over that part. The Buy More crew is still fun as well.
Any Nielsen voters out there care to help a brotha out?
