Arcade mode. Good luck. I recommend spamming force pull and throwing.

Vader must be a little harder to cheese with than Yoda. It only took me three tries to beat him with Yoda, and I did it basically with button mashing - and I really suck at these games.

I hadn't even set out to unlock him, I just wanted to try Yoda out, so I picked arcade mode.

I was surprised at how hard that last boss was on arcade mode, I tried that for the first time tonight with Seong Mina and it took me like 20+ tries to finally beat it.

Also tried the character creation, that shit is too addictive for me, I could sit in there for hours.

My Ivy Heartbreak sucks, getting my ass beat by the four gals in armor.....   NDA

One thing that has impressed me is how many modes there are.  Its making Ivy virtually impossible to learn, compared to Soul Calibur 2.   I swear I am doing the moves and it seems very situational when the specials actually fire.

Got this last night.   MY GOD IT IS PRETTY.    Though fuck Namco for the hard-on they have for Cassandra.  The original is better god damn it.  At least they gave me enough money to unlock Sophitia from the start.

I've yet to be able to hit a critical finisher. I think I'm broken.

I've never played any in the SC series.  I consider myself a fighting-game afficianado, but the truth is that I haven't liked any of them for a decade.  How does this compare to something like Dead or Alive?  Button mashing games only hold my interest for an hour, tops.

Me either. My characters just make a sort of half-hearted throw looking move which is so short that the other guys just stare at me as I try to grab air in front of them.

Well, first of all, DOA is practically button mashing. Second of all, this is better in every way. SC3 wasn't. This most certainly is a return to form for Project Soul.

Aye, but I'm getting the vibe that button mashing is a viable method for this game.  My reference to DOA was because I consider it total button mashing, so it collects dust on the shelf.  I am hoping to be convinced that this is different.

I'm pretty confident I could whoop a button mashers ass in SCIV. Or III. Or II. Or I. That said, it's accessible. Which is to say, a button masher could enjoy it also.

I finally got critical finishes to start working last night.  It's a bit deceptive in that their life bar starts flashing red and all that, but they're still not in soul break or whatever.  You have to wait for a little message to pop up on your side.  If they have gear left, it'll start breaking when they block, too, I think.  Anyway, they're nifty looking, but I don't see them happening much.  The opponent has to turtle forever, and even then, I was focusing on trying to get a critical finish, not killing them.  Beyond that, it seemed to work the same as landing any normal throw.

I love the character creation, even if it is fairly confusing, with not much info at all in the manual. Also, I cant find any info anywhere listing special moves. So far the only special moves I have found is to hold A+B and ether <- or ->. And that only seems to work about half the time, also, it doesnt always seem to do the same move. I wish there was a little more documentation for the game.

Press start in a fight, go to Move List.

If you do it in training mode, you can press a button or other on the move and it will show the move demo'd so you know if it's right or not when you do it.

That said, I'm totally not digging this game at all. I don't know when my desire to play fighting games curled up and died, but I'm spending so much more time with Spectral Force or whatever it is.

Yeah, it is. I don't grasp why that's amusing me, and Soul Calibur I can play for maybe 10 minutes before staring out a window or some shit more interesting.

Finally figured out the finishers. Get the guy flashing red, then hit him with a combo that Stuns. As soon as he goes wobbly from the stun, hit Left Bumper, you win. Doesn't seem to matter how close you are at the time, he just has to be stunned. Finished off Yoshimitsu on tower lev 20 this way, while he still had a full health bar.

The ability to rip 360 games to your HDD is coming later this year with the dashboard overhaul.  Should speed things up quite nicely.

If only they can set up a way to transfer your shit from the 20gb to a bigger drive without fucking tying you to online mode or bullshit workarounds with makiing new gamer profiles to restore your shit. Fucking tools.

I'd reeeeealy like to want to buy this game. I considered buyng it yesterday when I was at the mall, and almost did. But I haven't spent decent time on a vs beat em up since SC2 on the XBox, and even then I never finished the story mode. SC3 on PS2 I bought and then did fuck-all with, I don't think I even got around to unlocking everything. DOA sits there gathering dust.

The proiblem is that I don't have the same interest level and group of friends I did when I was younger, where we could sit around and play SF2 or Tekken for hours on end. Lately, I kind of do the Schild thing, where you try to unlock all the characters, then you meander through the SP side-content, before losing interest and throwing the very pretty looking game onto the pile. I think I've outgrown these bat-em-ups for the most part. If I had a Hammer Frenzy-type friend who was enthusiastic but not "no fucking point playing him"-good, then I would buy and spend time with it. Aside from the "depth-of-fighting" definition that your VF players talk about, vs fighter games just lack the depth or story to keep me interested these days. I think I've outgrown them.
As it is, I think I'll pick it up in a year when it's dropped to half-price. Or when someone has it on serious special.

I unlocked Darth Vader and the Apprentice today.  I am having a really hard time getting Vader's chokes to work as advertised.  I am starting to get a better feel for Ivy, but I still vastly prefer the way you were able to chain her moves in Soul Calibur 2.  Does anyone know what exactly these style level ups are doing?

They allow you to pick more powerfull skills in the character creation/editing section. So if you have a custom character with paired swords, and you get to level three in that, you can go back and edit your skills and now pick level three ones for that weapon style. My first custom character is now level 9 with the two handed Japanese sword, and as a result I was able to take Shave Damage A, which basically means I still do a big chunk of damage, even when my target blocks.

I haven't tried editing any of the stock characters yet, but I imagine it's the same.

Ok, I bought it. Mostly because I'm a Star Wars whore and I wanted to see the Apprentice.

I like it. It makes me want Force Unleashed even more, but its fun.

Fairly simple. The apprentice is badass. Some of his moves in SC4 are glimpse at how he's gonna be played in FU. (Heh) I'd like to see how they flesh out his story.

There is not a single thing in Force Unleashed that will play anything like Soul Calibur IV. I hate to say it, but this is the coolest you will ever see the Apprentice. It's all downhill from here.

You may be right, as the majority of SW games LA has made in the past have been fairly craptastic. That said, the Apprentice is totally one-dimensional in SC4, his moves are badass, but with a bunch of canned lines and being shoehorned into the storyline, I want more.
