Now official:

Quote
Redmond, Washington—Microsoft is giving consumers more gigabytes for their buck. The company today announced an Xbox 360® console with triple the storage space of the original console, but for the same price of $349 (U.S.) estimated retail price.

Available in retail stores in the U.S. and Canada starting in early August, the upgraded Xbox 360 will include a 60GB hard drive for storing the growing wealth of digital entertainment available for the console, including music, movies, television shows, and game content. In addition, Microsoft today dropped the price of its 20GB Xbox 360 console in the U.S. and Canada to just $299 (U.S.) (ERP) while supplies last, a savings of $50.

"We know consumers need more and more space to store the amazing digital content Xbox 360 offers, and we're giving it to them at no extra charge," said Albert Penello, Xbox director of product management at Microsoft. "No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver, and now you'll have three times the storage to manage all that great content."

Xbox 360 is just one of three Xbox 360 gaming and entertainment systems Microsoft offers. Microsoft's Xbox 360 Arcade, which comes with a 256MB memory unit and five Xbox LIVE Arcade games, is a value for the whole family for $279 (U.S.) (ERP), and the premium Xbox 360 Elite console is available with a 120GB hard drive for $449 (U.S.) (ERP).

Essentially the 20GB model is getting marked down by $50 (to $299), to clear them out for the release of the 60 GB model ($349) in August.  The marked down 20GB is a "while supplies last" thing, although after everyone rushes out to pick up a 20GB before stores run out, I wouldn't be surprised to see the 60GB get marked down.

I still don't "get" the elite.  Gotta be the biggest rip off in their line up.  HDMI instead of component?  Big whoop.  Other than that you're paying over $150 more for a lousy extra 100 GB.  This in an age when I just bought a 750GB HD from Newegg for $119.

The only reason the elite makes sense is if you're a compulsive HD movie downloader, and even then I still think you're being ripped off.

I bought a 360 Pro a couple of weeks ago and it came with a HDMI cable in the box. I don't know if that was a mistake or a Euro only thing but I was pretty surprised as I thought I'd have to buy one separately.

I was briefly cross that I could have got a 60GB by waiting a bit longer but then I'm not likely to go crazy downloading stuff to my console so it's not a big issue for me.

Honestly, the whole reason I picked up an elite as my second box was because it was black. (I'm on my third one now...) Extremely dumb reason, I know, but all of my electronics are black. I could have sanded/painted it but I didn't want to mess with that. I get almost no use at all for my hard drive. I use it for xbox live arcade games and whenever there are free TV downloads. I think I have something like 97 gigs free still. Sadly, I get more use out of my 40gb HD on my PS3 (till I upgrade it) because I like its media feel better then the 360's. Something about it just seems sleeker to me.

Overall, the difference from technical standpoints meant jack for me. I pushed the extra $$$ for the aesthetic appeal, a dumb reason, but money well spent for a picky bastard like myself. :)

As far as I am aware the only thing the HDMI gets you over component for X360 is that it will output 1080p rather than 1080i.  Or, maybe that's just my older fucked up release version X360.

Money aside, this is a good enough reason for most anyone to upgrade to the elite. The difference between HDMI and Component is like night and day unless you can't tell when colors aren't popping or if there's a grey film over everything. Seriously, HDMI on the 360 kicks the shit out of the component connections. Hell, VGA is even better than component.

Also, don't most 360s have HDMI now?

I'm still not buying one until the return rate at my local Best Buy drops below 3 a day.

I believe only the elite 360's have HDMI, but I haven't looked recently. edit: Hmm, does the HDMI cable work on non-elite/pro versions? I have the "regular" (aka pro) console and would love to use HDMI - not that I actually play it any, but you know ..

Funny, my 360 just started to give me the red ring of death - but after checking the MS support site it looks like they will repair that issue for free, up to 3 years after purchase. Seeing as my 1 year warranty ended in January this is a good thing!

All 360s produced after July 2007 have HDMI now according to Wikipedia. Phew, I'm not crazy.

I got an Elite for my second 360 because of the Falcon board.  I found that the black controller I had didn't work quite as well as the two white ones I had gotten previously.  I shipped the black one off to the warranty depot with my busted 360.

I like the HDMI output, visually, but I don't like how the 360 reboots itself when I switch off my TV or change to another HDMI input.

Mine doesn't do either of those things.

same.  When I had only one HDMI cable that I switched between my laptop and 360 it never shut itself off.

I have my 360 and a Blu-ray player hooked up to a HDMI switch and I have never had anything like that happen. I switch between the two all the time.

Both of my black controllers died. Ended up getting pink ones. They work. Also, I use AAs now.

Curious, I started looking around...

There's this from Mad Catz.  Crap reviews, however, so be warned.

As Schild said, if you have an older 360, you're better off going with VGA.  Better than component, not as good as HDMI.  That is, of course, you don't want to splurge for another newer 360 to get HDMI.

Yah I've been doing VGA so I'll probably stick with it, though I'm hoping that the 360 I sent back to get fixed comes back as a new HDMI-capable one, but that's a long shot. I was really just hoping to get down to one cable instead of using this RCA jack to stereo plug adapter thingy for sound.

I picked up a Pro in late 07 and it had an HDMI out, but no HDMI cable.  If they're including it now in the Pro SKUs, I can't really see a non-"it's black!" reason to get the Elite.

Before though, that HDMI cable was a thing to get in-box (Amazon has it at ~$50).

Is it 'just' an HDMI cable or is it some perverse Microsoft version of an HDMI cable, like with some retarded MS proprietary connector?

I'm using a monoprice HDMI cable to connect my 360. There's no Microsoft cabling between my 360 and the other components in my system.

Okay, I have an old X360 without an HDMI port and I was considering picking up a refurbed bottom end 360 with an HDMI port just for the 1080p goodness but the post above about 50 dollar special HDMI cables made me blink.

Buy hdmi cables from monoprice.com.  They work great and cost about $4

Definitely do that. I just bought 6 HDMI cables, 4 - 3ft ones and 2 - 10ft ones and it cost me around $25.00 shipped.
