Oh wow.  That second pic is just... incredible at showing the scale of the fires.  You know they're big and cover a lot of ground but for me, that one just has a lot of impact.

The last one is  Cry .

And I really hope someone's rescued those horses.

Unfortunately those pictures are of where I spent several years of my childhood.  Thankfully no family left in Paradise, but been pretty devastating for me to see a large part of my childhood go up flames.

The town is a major retirement community.  Big part of it is old people with limited mobility.  The fire first started around 6:30 AM and they were already ordering mass evacuation by noon, thats how fast is spread.  When I heard how fast it overtook the town, I knew it was going to be a complete disaster because of all the elderly there.  :(

Just to add on to all this, CalFire has been doing assessments of the fire damage and uploading so people can see if they have anything to come back to. Anything destroyed or damaged as a picture attached, but you can see the extent of the extreme damage done an entire city from all this:

http://calfire-forestry.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=5306cc8cf38c4252830a38d467d33728&extent=-13547810.5486%2C4824920.1673%2C-13518764.4778%2C4841526.1117%2C102100

Here's the house I lived in third grade, where I played Street Fighter 2 endlessly in arcades, and spent most of my time with friends deep in the forest that was right out the back yard of my house, speculating about government conspiracies and local legends/monsters as we built hidden forts to protect against such threats:

Isn't it "funny" how trees and brush (and a propane tank) just a hundred feet away appear fine?

No conspiracy theory intended, just the way fires work.

Found this kinda interesting on that front:

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

As someone who lived in California and had to run when San Diego burned down 11 years ago, that’s absolutely correct. Fast moving fires aren’t fueled by large forests, they’re fueled by scrub brush and eucalyptus. California rains heavily every 4-6 years, it gets super green, then dries out and dies. Then it catches fire if it sparks before the next rain cycle. As the rain cycles become further spread apart this will only get worse. “Better forest management” that the talking idiots are blabbing about is already done where people live and wouldn’t have helped much here.

Heh, was going to SDSU when that happened.  Living in the middle of the city so I was fine, but man, the apocalyptic scene of being able to stare at the vague orange ball that was supposed to be the sun with no issue, as it rained ash non stop for 3 days straight, was an interesting experience.

Both you and the headline writer got it wrong. A cow is a female, a bull is an intact male. He's a steer, a castrated male bovine.

Technically, as it has been castrated, it is not fucking anything much lately.

They used to use the word Ox as a singular for the bovine species.  why so serious?

It's also apparently a kind of manipulated photo--not only is the big one a steer, the little ones are actually an especially small breed--I think related to Japanese black cattle. Still, the WaPo article fessing up about the photo does say, "He's *kinda* big for a steer of his breed". He just wouldn't look that crazy extraordinary in a crowd of steers of his breed.

Ya, I thought the rest of them looked small. Still it was saying about 6 foot 3 which is still pretty huge for an Ox. A normal one is about 5 feel at the shoulder.

I've spent quite a bit of time at St Malo, it's an amazing place especially in the spring when the big storms hit.

Wouldn't want to be anywhere near that ship in that kind of weather, but it was fascinating to watch.

Nice!  I loved visiting the cemeteries in Poland on All Hallows Eve/All Saints Day.  They used lots of mulit-colored candles, but same thing.  Awesome picture, never thought about what it looked like from the air.

IBM 350 hard drive from a 1957 IBM RAMAC 305. 5MB capacity, 1 ton weight.

Also Eye Bee Emm dot text

Quote
According to Munce, the storage capacity of the drive could have been increased beyond five megabytes, but IBM's marketing department at that time was against a larger capacity drive, because they didn't know how to sell a product with more storage.
