Spend time in Tokyo, and that decision will make more sense to you.  Staring at their phones helps them avoid each other.

Final Fantasy IV: Another Story (or whatever, it's a sidestory), is coming out for cell phones.

That's right. Revive the license.

On fucking cell phones.

Dude, I played FF8 last summer and it was one of the worst games I ever played.  I bet I would have liked it more if I played it when I was 15 or whatever. I made a post detailing my contempt for the game awhile back.  I'm convinced nostalgia and the innocence of youth are the only things keeping this game as being remembered fondly.  Incidentally, I also played FF9 last summer (I was going through a tough time, don't judge!) and found it to be very enjoyable.  I liked the old school feel a great deal; FF9 felt like the closest thing we'll ever see again to FF6.  The game was permeated with an aura of all the awesomest SNES RPG's.
This, pretty much. VIII was worse than X2 for "Gameplay? Story? Never mind all that, look at the shiny!", had some of the most fundamentally unlikable protagonists in any FF ever, the mechanics sucked massively, and the ending made even less sense than the typical FF. The only thing decent about VIII was the card game.

IX, OTOH, was the closest we're ever going to get to a return to FFIV/VI-era Square and if you dislike it you're a miserable curmudgeon who thinks fun is for babies and all games should be about emo teenagers who cut themselves in secret. The only reasons why it's not recognized as one of the greatest games in the series is Square made two mistakes with it - the online guide/help book (minor problem), and that it was released for the PS1 instead of the PS2.

Edit: On further thought, FFVIII seeming to be  awesome, for real when you're a teenager but actually being  ACK! when you replay it as an adult makes sense - it's got that whole po-faced combined with emo teenaged angst thing going on which an audience of 15yo's could certainly identify identify with.

Still, emo teenage angst is far more evolved than most of the other shit out there. I'd take it over space marines at least. Unless they're drunk space marines -- but I haven't seen that in a game yet, so whatever. If it's for 15 year old's, then I'd say the majority of other stuff is for 10 year olds -- the year I decided to stop playing with G.I. Joes.

Basically, games are not maturing much as a whole. I don't see the point of the complaint.

As far as I remember, the combat played out pretty much like 7 and others. For that, I would rip into 12 (and 11, for that matter) before I ever ripped into 8.

It isn't about me liking the game. I just don't see how it's all that different from the rest as to be put so low.

Same goes for X2 -- I mean why? It's not much different than 10.

FF11 and 12, on the other hand, depart in crucial ways, and I think they're the poorest of the bunch for it.

Any game mechanic which means the optimum play method is filling up on spells by grinding a zero-threat mob for half an hour and then never actually casting those spells is so insanely broken it shouldn't have ever gotten past the design stage.

And I'll take IX's "What does it mean to be human?" theme over VII's "Woe is me, I'm an orphaned teenager in an  awesome, for real private academy. Pity me!", thanks.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Also, am I the only one who enjoyed FFVIII, especially moreso than 9?

No.  My wife loved it.  Lots of angsty pretty boys, and Squall is Prince Angst.  I bet she could suggest many manga you would like.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

I don't care what you say, Squal was a bitch and I didn't like much of th cast.  Gunswords > anything in IX except them having a true Black Mage.  Fucking IX sucked.  Every character in that was annoying, they weren't evne angsty they were just completely unrelatable.  Also the clanking retarded knight archtype?  Never do that again.  Ever.  The girl was useless and stupid too though I can't articulate why.

Also the parts in VIII when SEED gets all crazy and cities start flying around was pretty cool.  I remember no such cool part in IX.

FFVIII was a piece of garbage. It wasn't because Squall was an angsty teenager for me though; I think that can work. The main problem was how the plotting and dialog was an unintelligible mess, and prevented any rapport with the characters. If conversation had been more developed than "..." and "Oh, Squall!" then events might have carried a certain amount of gravitas. As it stood, I was ambivalent to Rinoa's plight (whatever it was), and Squall's burgeoning emotional development, and whatever imaginary bullshit all your other retards were going through. One of the weakest elements was probably the constant flashbacks of Squall having lost his sister; this is why he's so distant, you surmise. Then you find her about halfway through the game, and everyone pretends that it's no big deal. ALSO, turns out that all of you grew up together, but you lost your memories? WHAT? Things just became more and more terrible to the point that I was screaming at my monitor by the end, if I recall.

Still love the intro cinematic though.

Not only that, but GF's (summoning) was really the only efficient way to do anything.  Regular attacks and magic were so weak in comparison, as to be all but useless, even for trash mobs.  Not to mention there was no way to shorten the animation. A normal battle was to queue up three summons and then go take a shit.  Also, there was no gear or loot or itemization.  WEAK game.

Incidentally, I think FF8 holds the world record for "...." usage in dialogue.  Square mastered the ellipsis with that game.

I think Golgo 13 still wins that one.
But FF8 sucked horribly.  I played it around the time I played Fallout 2.
I stopped liking Console RPGs because of FF8.  Every problem I had with the genre all in one incredibly shitty and poorly designed game.

Every time I play a console RPG I hope that it gets better than the last.  So far, nothing takes Disgaea, well except for Makai Kingdom.

Not using the same ATB system as previous FFs is the major reason I liked 10 and 12. Some minor say on character progression was also welcome, but that's the TBSs talking.

FF12 was great to me BECAUSE it was a change of pace and we knew we were going back to the normal FF system by XIII (first trailer came out before 12 hit America). As such, it was a great departure. Also, a very successful experiment in a completely new gametype. Every single diku MMOG should adopt the XII system.

I'm actually looking forward to Square's next MMO, because even if they use their FF "IP" they are creating a world for the game, not shoehorning something into a game.  Unless they get dumb and set it in the VII world just to piss me off.  I got some kick out of the Vincent shooter & Advent Children but it also felt sort of tacky.

I don't really remember much about VIII. I remember they had flying Hogwarts and a sniper cowboy who I thought was cool. I don't recall liking it less than FFX; the only character I thought was cool in X was the dominatrix chick. Tidus was a douchebag and Wakka got pretty old. I still have not had time to play XII. It's been sitting by my PS2 for over a year. After I finish Mass Effect I will try to go back and play that.

I never really dug VII. Visually it was stellar for the time, and Cloud was less obnoxious than some of the other recent leads, and there was the big twist, but I never really liked Sephiroth that much. I don't know why people get all damp for him.

7 probably remains my favorite, with 4 and 6 right up there with it (6 was especially awesome).  The game was fun, overall had a good plot, had a ton of things to do to keep you into the game for awhile, and was amazing visually (for the time).  Haven't really been able to get into any of them since 7.  Playing 8 after 7 probably had a big part in that, heh.

And I actually loved play 1 (and still love it actually).  That was an awesomely fun game when I played it.  It was also ass fuckingly harder than anything of the other games (well, I hear that the original 2 and 3 for the NES are suppose to be insanely hard or something, but never played those).  You really had to build your party up with the right mix of supplies and spells for an expedition from the town to the dungeon and back....

In the time that I fooled with XII's battle system, I really liked it. I felt like I had much more control over what was occurring in combat.

And oh yeah, NO RANDOM BATTLES. Random Battles can fuck themselves in the face.

FFVI was the best of them all. FFVII is my second best.

I haven't played FF beyond the VIII, but I might catch up one day.

Oh and I played Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicle on Gamecube, trashed it after 2h of playing it. What a crappy game, how come it's even associated to the Final Fantasy Serie?

If they ever release a remake of FFVI, I would buy a console just for it.

Thats the reason that in Wild Arms 2 they gave you the ablity to skip random battles before they occur.  Also lets you know when the enemy you're about to fight is something you haven't seen before.  That was really cool.
