Was that a mini tsunami or something? Thats a pretty big damn wave to misjudge compared to the others.
It's a matter of how the offshore portion of a beach is shaped. If they have the right depth and curve to them then a wave that only looks two or three feet higher than the rest when it's coming in can suddenly double in size as it hits the shoreline shelf. Vulnerable beaches usually have signs to this effect (The term used is "sleeper waves", I think). |
