I disagree.  The wedding dress need only please the bride.  After a week, she's the only one that will remember the wedding anyway.
Except for those bad pictures taken to remember forever the wonderful occasion the dress with lacy ruffles everywhere, with the gloves (with or without finger for the ring), and with the veil and train that require a small army to move around.  The late 70's and 80's seemed to have a real plethora of bad dresses, although my aunt who was married in 1970 or so had a terrible dress then too (pictures for all!).

It's one thing to think back and remember bad outfits, it is an entirely different thing to be constantly reminded with pictures (posted on the intardtubes for all to see or not).  I would say tasteful and refined for the bride, and whatever the hell you want to subject the bridesmaids to since they are going to hate the dress anyway.

Dunno, the last two weddings I was at I managed to snag a bridesmaid. They were in more tastefully cut dresses than the brides, despite the horrible colors. (Peach for one and awful puke-green for the other)

Indeed. Kids these days. I used to spend hours and hours sitting at my local libraries (and we had *a lot* of them) reading.
