I can't be the only one who immediately went and tried this and was pleasantly surprised to find out it works.

You're not, but I had to look up the tracert syntax to get the whole song (default Windows "tracert bad.horse" will cut it off around halfway, depending on how many hops until you hit the first "bad.horse"). It's "tracert -h 60 bad.horse", if anyone else wants to know.

Looking it up would've been too much work, I just typed tracert bad.horse 100 and it gave me syntax

Code:
Usage: tracert [-d] [-h maximum_hops] [-j host-list] [-w timeout]
               [-R] [-S srcaddr] [-4] [-6] target_name

Options:
-d                 Do not resolve addresses to hostnames.
-h maximum_hops    Maximum number of hops to search for target.
    -j host-list       Loose source route along host-list (IPv4-only).
-w timeout         Wait timeout milliseconds for each reply.
    -R                 Trace round-trip path (IPv6-only).
-S srcaddr         Source address to use (IPv6-only).
    -4                 Force using IPv4.
    -6                 Force using IPv6.

Someone has too much time (and too many spare routers) on their hands.

Surely it'll be done in software ?  If that's all actual hardware, someone is really, really needing a hobby.

Yeah, my assumption would be that somebody wrote a script where you give it a set of strings and it spins up a bunch of VMs to create a network topography with appropriately named nodes.

Broken for me (Chrome refuses to let the page load because the security certificate is 'scrambled'). But http://bad.horse helps for those that don't get the reference (warning: Autoplaying video).

Seriously, Ren, you should watch. Possibly the only good thing to come out of the Writer's Strike was leaving all those people with nothing better to do than an elaborate joke musical.

Chrome wouldn't show the site for me but when the message of chrome's rejection shows you can still view the cert and see that path.
