Makes no sense as to why he would want to go back and get a piece of paper with his name on it from a school after you accomplished that sorted thing in your life. What could that possibly do for your career especially in that business?

If the story's even true, Maybe he just didn't want to leave something he started unfinished? It doesn't seem weird to me at all. Dropping out of grad school still occasionally nags at the back of my mind.
